The photos with this on an SL3 have nice contrast and good punchy colors, and the lens has a great size and weight for good handling.Autofocus has tended to be nice and quick in decent light with the SL3, as well. The corners and far edges aren't going to be as good as the heavier, hyper-expensive APO-Summicron-SL, and I expect (expect because the only SL APO I have myself is the 35mm, which is actually technically better than the 50 one) that the 50 APO gives an improvement in microcontrast even in the places this lens is at its best, but this non-APO Summicron is an excellent lens by normal standards. Is it better than the Lumix 50/1.8 with the same optical formula? I can't say for sure, both are good; but I've been enjoying this Leica version and telling ... MoreThe photos with this on an SL3 have nice contrast and good punchy colors, and the lens has a great size and weight for good handling.Autofocus has tended to be nice and quick in decent light with the SL3, as well. I like this one's lens hood, as well.

I was pretty nervous to pull the trigger on such an expensive lens. I already have a 50mm Summilux for the M system so apart from having good AF, this one had to really impress me for me to keep it.I was skeptical, but it is as good or better than the reviewers say it is. On my SL2-S, it rivals or surpasses the look that my Mamiya 7 gives me. At f/2, the image is sharp corner to corner with no aberrations, yet still somehow has a unique, beautiful character that I can't even quite fully understand. For me this is the best 50mm I have ever used.

As is typical of Leica lenses, images are sharp as a tack and color rendition is very natural. Excellent—fast and quiet—AF in good light. Slows and stutters a bit in low light on the new Leica SL 2. Manual focus ring is a bit tight for my taste, especially relative to my manual focus Leica M lenses, which are silky smooth and take only a very light touch. It is built like a tank, so it is no lightweight. However, it balances very well on the CL and, especially on the SL2. I will still use the Leica M10 or M mono and Apo 50 M for walking around a city or any time my back gives out from carrying the SL2.

The 50mm f/1.4 Summilux SL is a stunning lens. Yes, it is slower to focus, heavier and less contrasty than the 50mm APO Summicron SL. If you are concerned with focus speed and/or weight, then rent the APO Summicron SL, otherwise the contrast differences are quite negligible and the DOF is really beautiful. I shot on the SL2-S and created some really beautiful images that I'm extremely proud of. The color & light rendering are typical Leica, a.k.a. stunningly beautiful. Other alternatives are the Panasonic 50mm f/1.4 but it doesn't render the color or light quite as nicely as the Leica, though its significantly cheaper. Rent this if you've got the budget, muscle and don't mind a slightly slower focus speed.
This Leica 50mm Summicron-SL lens is a lovely, long-awaited prime lens for Leica SL series cameras. Leica's original SL zoom lenses are burdensome to carry and use; and though subsequent APO primes are of course lighter, they're still larger and weigh more than some other-brand zooms. However, the new, non-APO, SL prime series (there's also a 35mm) cut both the size and weight of the APOs by nearly half. One can only be grateful. Naturally, pixel-peepers can assure themselves that this new 50mm lens does not match the extraordinary optical performance of the APO version, but it is still excellent and more than adequate for any normal use. Now what Leica needs to do is to complete its new, non-APO series by adding the 18mm, 24mm, and 85mm models.
After a ton of research, I was influenced in my choice of this lens by Benj Haisch's emotional YouTube video expressing how, to him, the 50mm Summicron SL was the best 50mm he had ever used, and maybe the best lens, period, he had ever used. I am not interested in getting into an argument bout Bests but will only say that on my SL2, the lens at F2.0 is flat out amazing. I have used many 50mm in the past, including the Otus 55mm, but this Leica is just...special in its' rendering. IQ + character is all I care about in the end, and this, to my eyes, has it in spades.
Beautiful images out of the camera. Bokeh is very smooth and lovely, which is the reason to choose this lens. Nice contrast and photos look alive. Very low robotic humming sound coming from the AF system, you're not going to notice it unless you put your ear next to the camera. AF speed is fine to me from a landscape photographer's point of view when I use AF-S with joystick. I am not a AF-C (continuous tracking) person or a video person, so don't know how well that works. AF is very accurate though, so I am not complaining. The lens hood feels well built, but could be a little smoother when you slide it on. It doesn't have the tapered end on the rail of bayonet, so it's not self-guiding. You have to consciously align white dot on the lens hood and the dot on the lens to slide on properly as it is a very precision tight fit. It is an improvement over the TL lens hood in term of the amount of degree you have to twist counterclockwise before it locks (about 30 degrees). You might think that is a minor detail, but it does affect the durability of the lens hood, if the user finds the lens hood operation intuitive. Inside of the lens hood has velvet lining to cut down extra stay light. The body construction itself is very well done. I don't have Leica SL2, but I have handled one before, so I know it'll balance very well with it. It's not a light weight lens, but it feels good with Panasonic S1R I am using it with. It is a fairly expensive lens, so it does take a while to think through whether it is worth the extra cost. However, it does deliver what it promises, which is best of the class image quality.
I use the SL2 and M bodies. I have the 24mm-90mm lens for the SL2, but I really only use it for studio style work because it?s so big and not super fast. I prefer the 50mm focal length in general and use the 50mm APO Summicron-M almost exclusively on my M Monochrom. I had been using my other M primes on the SL2 with the adapter but wanted at least one lens that I could just grab and go and also have autofocus. This lens has the same sharpness and the same 3D look from the M APO. . . the background bokeh is smooth and the quick drop in contrast from in-focus to out of focus looks amazing. It?s so sharp, that I often drop down the texture setting in Lightroom to make portraits more appealing. I got the lens and the new SL2 firmware came out right after. Together, autofocus seems to be fast and accurate. With it set to intelligent autofocus and face / body detect, it seems to always grab the closest eye (even though it?s only showing the face detect in the viewfinder).
This a is beautiful lens. I used it on the Panasonic s1r in high res mode which outputs a 187 megapixel raw image at 55" on the long side. This was the ideal lens for that purpose. Very good sharpness and beautiful tonal range.
A brief addition to my review: I just returned from a winter in Yellowstone trip during which the metal ring of the lens hood fell off of the plastic cylinder. I spoke with Leica NJ and expect that they will send me a replacement, but, at this price, a tough one piece hood would be better than the two-piece hood. Part of the function of the hood is to protect the lens against bumps. In my case, the thing fell apart as I was putting in on the lens, but I hope they redesign this piece and offer a replacement to current owners that will not break while being affixed to the lens.
