I know many other laptops have similar issues so it’s not unique to Lenovo. And I will give credit, that once your case is escalated, their customer service is great and they will take care of you. I’m going to be sending my computer in to the depot for repair soon, for free. I do greatly appreciate that, especially since I’m way out of warranty now. I just hope the latest ideapads have redesigned hinge internal components, so this doesn’t happen to more people. Also, I have been as delicate with it as I possibly can. I only open it from the center of the screen, never pick it up from the screen. I have a cushioned laptop bag for it to live in when not in use. I don’t know what else I can do to prevent this happening again next year, besides use it as a desktop and never close it or take it anywhere, but that entirely defeats the main point of buying a laptop lol. The specs on this machine are amazing and more than satisfactory for my needs/wants! I have been very happy with load speeds and performance. It’s just unfortunate the hinge has to ruin an otherwise outstanding device.

Considering my overall experience so far, I would rate the internal usage regarding applications and the operating system as fair. It takes a firm amount of pressure to be able to be able to insert connections into the USB slots. The laptop also appears as though it can survive multiple drops from varying heights, and still stay together as one piece. Therefore, based on my overall conclusion, the positive testimonials from friends and employees, as well as the overall reputation of the brand, I would say that this laptop is an absolute no-brainier for anyone looking for a reliable and sturdy laptop with exceptional hardware speed and graphics, that can be relied on through the many years of potential physical damage to come.

Physical feel, and performance, were great. This was not bought for gaming, so haven't evaluated that - I wouldn't have bought it for gaming anyway. Big pluses are the backlit keyboard, Camera sliding shutter, and responsive touchscreen on a 15: display. The only challenge so far is with the ports: only two USB (Type A), and the Type C USB port is taken by the AC power supply. Additionally, there is no RJ45 port for wired network. However, this was expected before buying; really wasn't expecting any more for the price. So far, I have only run into one issue with 3rd party software, and that was because the laptop was received with VMD enabled in the BIOS, which had to be disabled (i.e., changed to AHCI). VMD is newer Intel technology for RAID support, so it probably shouldn't have been enabled in the first place - so be aware of that. The system drive is a 256GB NVMe SSD - not the biggest but more than sufficient in speed and capacity for the laptop's intended use. The physical limitations mentioned make the review 4-stars. The price of $200 below MSRP for a Lenovo product added the 5th star.

This machine is very powerful, with a Core i7 and 16GB of RAM. It is well built, feels sturdy, and the keyboard is excellent, as is per usual with Lenovo.The touchpad is large and has a good feel, but it does not seem to be multi-zone, so no scroll section (which I don't like, anyway). The display has good color, but the maximum brightness is a bit underwhelming for rooms with natural lighting. However, some of the perceived problem can be remedied in the Intel Graphics Command Center by bumping up the brightness enhancement.Overall, this computer is an excellent value, with all of the features that I want, and none that I don't (i.e. touchscreen, pen computing, exotic gesture control, etc.)It's a near-perfect home office and business machine.

However, when running on battery the display gets dim and unable to increase brightness. Guess it is fine so long as I have it plugged in when using it.I like the fingerprint id option - it takes a few minutes to set up and I am liking it.I like the shutter over camera lens - no more need for duct tape to cover it. I rarely use a camera on my laptop.Storage on the ideapad i5 is fine for me, I keep very little on the computer and really prefer using my external harddrive.Price of the ideapad i5 was reasonable. It is a stylish machine. But Lenovo sure does up the price a lot with optional extended warranties, on site repairs, damage insurance, battery replacement, etc Yes I paid the price for these add-ons. This increased the price a lot, but never having had a Lenovo brand before I am not sure what to expect for it and needed to add the extra protection.Once I saw that the only way the display could be bright enough for me to use was to have it connected to a power source, I regret getting the battery replacement option since I will never run this on battery power.I use my usb wireless mouse instead of the touch pad - it works fine. I do wish there were more usb ports though. I am using 1 for mouse and 1 for external harddrive.Touchscreen is great. I have touchscreen on old laptop and on desktop, I like this feature a lot, and if I use someone elses laptop they ask me why I am tapping their screen(they dont have touchscreen).Although the ideapad i5 ended up costing a lot because of the add-on items, I am pleased with the machine.

It lasted about 4 months before problems showed up, and continues to be an absolute nightmare for reliability.1. The left side speaker stopped working first - I (too this day, even though Lenovo "fixed it") cannot play audio for more than 5 minutes without the speakers sounding like a broken kazoo.2. The screen stopped working. The keyboard was still responsive and the computer could be interacted with through an external monitor, but the screen was black and there was nothing that could be done from a software perspective. It looks like I am going to need to buy a new laptop before grad school, after less than 2 years of owning this one. I wanted to pivot to a windows computer, but this horrible experience has made me consider going back to Apple. I could have dealt with the hardware issues, but the customer service response was abysmal and now I am left with a laptop that has half the features it came with. This laptop was an absolute dud for me, be careful when purchasing.
This laptop is extremely lightweight, compared to my ancient, but still serviceable old laptop. It has Windows 11 which, after a few days of using it, seems to improve nothing over Windows 10. It appears that Microsoft just moved the settings around to make you relearn what you knew about Windows 10 and to fool people into paying for a useless upgrade. Eventually they'll all have Windows 11 so I may as well learn it. So far, all of the software I use seems to work just fine on this laptop and, with a processor twice the speed of my old one, performance is quite good. (Based on CPU benchmarks by Passmark) The keyboard is pretty good for a chiclet style. It doesn't slow me down much and I'll get used to it. I didn't open the case to see if it is soldered in and I won't, to avoid voiding the warranty, until there is an issue. I just retired after decades of being a computer tech and some laptop issues can be solved by simply removing and replacing the battery. Also, batteries will eventually fail. My employer was exclusively a Lenovo shop so my experience does apply to this laptop. Had I known this beforehand, I would not have ordered this laptop. If the battery was easily user replaceable, I would have given this laptop 5 stars.
