Fantastic computer, disappointing shipping process

Long story short, my computer wasn't even *shipped* until the day I was originally told I would receive it when I ordered. I don't mind if it takes longer to ship and understand there are a lot of factors at play, but I'd rather be told that upfront rather than be given one date and have to wait for another one (especially given the fact that this is a package I needed to be home to sign for). All in all though, I'm really glad that I went with this computer, and it seems like it will be a sturdy computer for years to come.

The OS is Windows 11 Home, and it comes with the usual assortment of unnecessary (for most people) bells and whistles, which can be removed by the savvy user. I like the charging cord because it has an L-shape near the device connector, thus not causing you to need an extra 2" of room on the left just for the darned cord. The CPU is good for basic games and streaming video, and the 8 MB of RAM is sufficient if you don't tax it too much. If you want to have open programs, multiple browser tabs open and big downloading/streaming going on, you will need to add more RAM, which is doable on this model. Also, if you add a second RAM module, the memory becomes 'dual-channel' and that allows the CPU to upgrade its built-in video processing from Intel UHD to Iris XE. The boot drive is a Solid State Drive (SSD) and is basic entry level, only 256GB and not super fast. For plenty of storage, the machine also includes a 1-Terabyte SATA hard drive, not solid state. The RAM and the SSD can both can be upgraded after purchase, with the proper caution and know-how, and in my humble opinion, that will really get the best power and speed out of this machine for the money spent.I also really like the 'Novo Button'. It is a key located just to the right of the F12 key. It has a picture of a star with an 'S' on it. If you press the Start button and then press the Novo key right away, a 'Novo Button Menu' comes up. This menu allows you to enter the BIOS setup, enter the boot menu, enter a System Recovery mode, or just go to normal startup. This can be a real lifesaver if Windows has problems, especially System Recovery Mode!

I returned a Dell Inspiron to buy this notebook. For the price it offered more features than what the Inspiron had. Yes, at this price point there are compromises, the screen quality is not perfect but acceptable. The touchpad is not the best, and of course speakers are certainly lacking in full audio spectrum. I use headphones mostly so not a deal breaker. Battery life is 3 to 4 hours in my experience, and nice to see a full featured USB C port at this price. Backlite keyboard is nice, but only one brightness setting. My only nix on this refurb was that I spent over 3 hours updating at first given the OS version was outdated and several drivers needed updates including bios. Great for grad students + Streaming Movies + Cheap
19 March 2023

Lenovo for grad school. It's better than I expected it to be. I hadn't given Lenovo much of a thought when buying a new laptop. I'd purchased 2 Toshiba's in undergrad and I was happy with those. I typically use my products (electronics and etc.) until the wheels fall off and they're no longer usable, which led me to being pretty desperate for a new laptop. I had a pretty small budget so I had to rethink going with a third Toshiba. I tried a Chromebook, actually, before I considered getting a Lenovo Ideapad 3 but it didn't do what I needed it to do. I didn't like having to go online to access Microsoft word, Power Point, etc. I decided to just give Lenovo a try. I didn't like having to go online to access Microsoft word, Power Point, etc. I decided to just give Lenovo a try. I use it for school work and for streaming movies and tv shows and it does a great job! Satisfied and happily surprised!Likes:It's VERRRY light weight! I travel a lot and I need something that I can carry on my back that won't weigh me down while I'm sprinting through the airport. The screen is antireflective so light still shows up on it, but it's softened so you can actually use it outside in a shady spot. The laptop opens up 180 degrees! It lays completely flat open, which is really nice. I use a laptop stand to prop mine up so that I can achieve better posture while I'm sitting down for hours at a time and it's nice to be able to manipulate the screen that much. I didn't think I'd care that much but it's actually really nice.It has a number pad! I know, it's not a big thing, but it's handy to have on such an affordable laptop. There's usually a huge upcharge for that feature, which is bogus.Has several USB jacks and they definitely charge other devices so if you're short on outlets (like at the airport!) and can't plug in multiple devices, you can charge on your laptop. The webcam has a privacy cover that you can slide open and closed.Nice speaker system. My previous laptop was hard to hear from, but this one has a LOUD sound ability. Don't get me wrong, this is not studio music quality, it's "I can hear everything they're saying on screen" quality.Dislikes:The batter doesn't last quite as long as it says it does. On Lenovo's website, it says it lasts for "up to 7 hours" but I've seen mine last for less than half, maybe? I have my screen brightness on about half and I have it in sleep mode when I don't use it so those can be some contributing factors, but I can't see it sucking up that much battery life. Still decent battery life, but not 7 hours! The materials that the laptop is made of are a little too flexible and malleable so I'm kind of scared it's gonna break so I'm usually conscious of how I have it situated in my bag or what's going on around me. I don't want to drop it or have it knocked down....I didn't have as many dislikes as I thought I'd have. It's a really great laptop for the money. I use it for school and streaming shows/movies and it does a fantastic job. I'm not a gamer so I have no idea how it does for that sort of thing.

For the price it really does it’s job well. The storage space and processor it runs on are both great for me! I’ve come back to Lenovo products a few times because of their affordability when it comes to very decent quality products- not mediocre, not expensively fancy, but really good for someone like myself. I don’t need anything beyond this quality (in a good way!)Windows S Mode is strange for me and I don’t personally like it, but i can deactivate that mode (this deactivation IS permanent and I am not able to reactivate it though) so it’s ineffectual to me.I appreciate that, in general, laptops from companies like these stay compatible throughout generations/iterations of their devices. I appreciate that they create diversity in their devices; not to market one as a cheaper, worse, older version of a more expensive one- but to create a realistic variety of options for regular Laptop buyers. I had a lot to choose from between similar laptops based on prices and internal pieces, which is refreshing to have that kind of variety for (even on a limited budget). As soon as I got my laptop I was able to start transferring files from an iPad without much hassle. Only issue was the first device acting weird about the connection, but I know is the iPad’s issue and it doesn’t affect too much. If you’re going to transfer every photo on your device, select only a few folders at a time (from that Internal Storage drop-down) and really be patient with it, don’t expect to use the iPad until you’re complete.I will also mention that I was able to run Minecraft Java relatively well! I wasn’t about to put on shaders and run on 16 render distance etc. but with fancy graphics and default FOV and everything, it was so much smoother than other devices I would struggle through playing on. This Laptop still works for casual Minecraft gameplay which I love a lot. I also downloaded a Steam game so far (shapez.io) and everything is swell.Camera and microphone work well too, again it’s nothing expensive or fancy but it still surprised me considering what (my inexperienced) research was leading me to believe. If you want to do anything special with the Laptop like stream gaming or use photoshop I can’t answer with 100% certainty it would run smoothly, and the camera would need an upgrade/secondary setup, but I can enter video calls and there’s no trouble as long as the wi-fi isn’t absolutely hellish.variety of ports is also nice!really love this laptop!

However, I just felt that I needed more than 4 GB of ram, so I was looking for something with a little more power! I then came across the IdeaPad Slim 3i, which had more ram, storage, and features, plus it had the Alder Lake i3-N305 ... So all a win win in my case! I haven't had a ton of time to take it through its paces, however yesterday I did some video editing, and listening to music and had 15 or so tabs running in the browser, without the computer hiccuping in anyway! I was totally impressed at the performance of this processor , PLUS I love the back-lit keyboard, and the responsive track pad... the keyboard has great travel as well as a nice quite touch to it... the track pad is very responsive to gestures and while I use a blue tooth mouse most of the time with my work, I can see myself using this track pad more than I usually do! The screen resolution is real nice and at 300 nits , is plenty bright and sharp with good contrast. I saw one review on this site saying that the i3 -N305 was an inferior processor?.... I just don't see it, and I think the performance is excellent , as its performed well with anything I've thrown at it so far! All in all, as far as taking things into consideration like features, built quality, performance and price, I would highly recommend the IdeaPad Slim 3i !

S Mode is for Saps
30 May 2023

I hadn't heard about this S mode before, which basically locks you into safe programs from Microsoft. You can't download anything from other sources. Not even Chrome, for example, which the computer insists you don't need, with a pop-up admonishment. "For your own good," as your mom might say. To get out of this took research. You can't even use REGEDIT in Admin mode (which it considers not to be a Microsoft program!). For someone not very techie or computer literate, S mode is probably very useful, but for me it was quite a hindrance. When I found the steps, the mouse would not click the button to get out of S mode. After two days of madness, I was ready to return the laptop, but then tried plugging in an external mouse. With the external mouse, I finally turned this S mode off. This is a permanent change, no going back. Now it's nkta bad machine. But when I tried pair it wirelessly with my new Fire TV, it could not complete the pairing, though the TV recognized the device. After 20 plus attempts, I've given up for now and bought a long HDMI cable. Possibly there is some setting I can change to make that work, but it's quite disappointing. I use my TV as a large external monitor when home.Battery life is fair. The plug is huge, and won't fit in some strips. I don't even see where the battery might be. I hope it's not the kind that requires a tech to replace.Though it's large (which I like for the screen size), it's fairly light. It fits into my large backpack, which has a padded computer compartment. It's light enough to carry around, if unwieldy.Because it's solid state, it usually is ready for me pretty quickly, but longer if it was fully powered off. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars, but the annoying S mode thing made me choose 3 over 4 stars. For the price, it's not bad. I bought it thinking it was this huge Amazon sale, but I've since determined the price is similar everywhere, or even cheaper.

Works Great, Pros and Cons but overall good.
19 September 2023

So far I love it! It runs everything I want it too as a student and can even perform some gaming tasks while im not home. Pros, It runs very well and clean only ever had it crash once, Touchpad is super nice and works with no feedback issues. Cons, The battery life is kinda underwhelming, I was constantly charging it since I was using it in class (6 hours a day Max) I also when purchasing didnt think the FULL keyboard would be a issue but after using it I get frustrated trying to use the mousepad but its slightly to the left, so middle of the keyboard is right click. I find myself never using the number pad on the side but who knows maybe when I take a math course it will be helpful. Other than that I do recommend this computer, definitely not for full on gaming or ... MoreSo far I love it! If your worried about the screen size dont be. It is big dont get me wrong but It is definitely not as big as you expect. Perfect for movies or videos but still great for typing or just browsing the web.
