Our company has been purchasing these style docks for the past 5 years or so and have never had issues with them from the Lenovo T430 through the T470. These new thunderbolt docks however have been nothing but trouble. A large quantity of the ones we've deployed have display output issues, and USB detection problems, all software/driver based out of the box. It took a while, but Lenovo finally started pushing firmware updates out to rectify these issues. However their Windows 10 app is so bad it will sometimes fail to ever find updates, and when it does, they will sometimes fail to install. Even after all updates are completed a few users still experience problems. When these docks work they're fine, but our experience so far has been nothing but frustration.

This docking station will enable me to use my Lenovo ThinkPad T15 Gen 2 as my main PC if necessary. So, that allows the T15 to perform two functions: travel and primary computing. I tried it out and it works great.

Fits the laptop and provides a keyboard angle that is helpful. Multiple extension ports allow for easily connecting peripherals.Having an issue with a second monitor blacking out occasionally. Working to figure out if it is the adapter or something with the laptop. Leaning towards an issue with the adapter right now.

The docking station is well designed. I wish it had one more HDMI port for dual monitors instead of having to use a DVI port instead.I'm also wary of the slider that connects the docking station to the laptop. I'm being very careful with it because I'm afraid when I disconnect the laptop from it that it might break if I pull on it too hard.So as long as I am careful when disconnecting the laptop from the docking station, I feel this is a very good solution to connect all my peripherals.
Excellent value for Lenovo's ThinkPad docking station. New unit with all the ports you'd expect from an Ultra Dock. The only knock on this new design is that it is not as solid a connection as the old docking station with the connection made to the bottom of the laptop. This side connection via special port can easily come loose from even a minor jostle and it doesn't have that satisfying click when you mount the laptop, so a partial connection is possible where only one of two external monitor comes on. Once you get used to the new side sliding connection those problems tend to go away.
I prefer having the traditional docking station compared to using the thunderbolt dock which uses a USB-c type connector. It maintains the classic ThinkPad style.I use this with a Ryzen based ThinkPad A485 and can drive 3x 1440p external displays + laptop display.I also use this with a ThinkPad P53s and can drive 2 external displays + laptop screen or 3 external displays without the laptop screen.Lots of USB ports and modern display connectors 2x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI and 1x legacy VGA (D-Sub).If you have an issue with displays going blank on P53s or other intel based ThinkPads you will need to install Lenovo Vantage to have it update the firmware used with the docking station.
Pros: Hat's off to Lenovo that they've managed to engineer a dock which consistently manages to line up a small port on the side of the machine to dock it.It's got a good range of ports on the back including dual DisplayPort and a mixuture of USB A and CCons: Compared to a traditional dock which engages with a connector on the bottom of the laptop, this feels a little cumbersome...With my old T-series and other Lenovos is was a case of 'plonk' and you're docked. With this, there's a little bit of wiggling to line it up and then you've still got to manually slide a plastic connector to engage at the side. Not a massive amount more effort but just not as slick as it could be.There's not quite enough USB-A ports for all my peripherals - my previous dock had 6 USB-A ... MorePros: Hat's off to Lenovo that they've managed to engineer a dock which consistently manages to line up a small port on the side of the machine to dock it.It's got a good range of ports on the back including dual DisplayPort and a mixuture of USB A and CCons: Compared to a traditional dock which engages with a connector on the bottom of the laptop, this feels a little cumbersome...With my old T-series and other Lenovos is was a case of 'plonk' and you're docked. Not a massive amount more effort but just not as slick as it could be.There's not quite enough USB-A ports for all my peripherals - my previous dock had 6 USB-A ports whereas this has 4 USB-A and 2 USB-C - I was able to switch my keyboard over to a USB-C connector, and for things like a USB Thumb Drive it's still possible to access one of the USB ports on the laptop whilst docked..I did have a weird problem with this dock just one time (so far!) - I'd left the machine on for a few hours unattended and came back to find the USB ports had lost power so my keyboard/mouse wouldn't work.I tried resetting the power and unplugging everything but nothing helped and I eventually had to power down the laptop and the dock to fully reset it and make it work again.
Pros: This docking station has been a game changer. The dual DisplayPort sockets mean I can run two monitors. Working in extended move has increased my productivity at home. The 4 USB ports plus 2 USB-C ports allow me to have so much plugged into a single location. Having 1 'always on' usb port is so useful. Works seamlessly with my laptop - no device drivers required like some non-OEM docks.
The Lenovo ThinkPad docking station is an essential tool for those of us using multiple monitors. Can't live without it. However, the shipped-with firmware performed erratically when waking up the laptop. Sometimes it recognized my two external monitors, sometimes it didn't. This is a known problem for at least six months. Took a firmware upgrade to fix it. Given the market both the Lenovo ThinkPad and the docking station is aimed for, this is surprising. Couldn't the upgraded firmware come pre-installed at this point?I also found the two-step process for engaging and disengaging the laptop to the station awkward compared with the "push button" process in prior models.Despite this, I gladly live with it to gain my screen real estate.
Honestly, I would give it a 1 star but I will give it a 2 star as when it works, it works great. I have done everything from firmware updates on the dock to updates on our Lenovo laptops and even the monitor. With that said, some units still break and require an RMA. Definitely was far better when IBM owned the thinkpad line.Be aware that there are also update to Intel Management softwares that also could break it and Lenovo has no path or solution. Also, there is only 1 HDMI port and 2 Display port which makes no sense to me as I had issues with Display port and display port connection and had to use HDMI and display port of it to work. USB-C also only works with HDMI but cant use USB-c for 2 monitors.
