Horrible product due to constant subwoofer Bluetooth cutting in and out. If it wasn't for the annoying loss of bass every few minutes it would be cool. But it's not. I've reset it, reconnected it, I've been to LGs troubleshooting menus... it's a freaking headache and a huge disappointment. And it's hooked up to an LG Smart TV go figure. Shame on you LG your own product lines don't work well together. Think I'ma check into JBL instead!!

As the title suggests my subwoofer blew out less than a year into ownership. Coincidentally the manufacturers warranty only lasts for 1 year after purchase. Makes me wonder if they design these with planned obsolescence in mind or if LG craftsmanship really has tanked that much in the last couple of years. At any rate I've got a warranty claim out to LG since thankfully I was still a few days shy of the warranty expiring. We'll see if they fix my issue. Regardless I shouldnt as a customer be dealing with this less than a year into ownership. I was planning on getting the SPK8-S Expansion kit that is compatible with this unit that enables rear channel surround sound but after this experience I do not think I will be buying home theatre products from LG anymore. I recommend you spend a little more money and go elsewhere. As far as the sound quality of the product. The mids and high frequencies are decently clear and enjoyable. I did find that the lower end frequencies and the bass seem to be overrepresented in the overall sound profile. Even with the bass set to -5 in the settings (minmum setting allowed) in "Standard" mode I still feel the bass tended to overpower the sound signature and drown out some of the higher end details.

I am so glad I read all the reviews for the sound bars I was considering on order to make the right choice between the Samsung & LG sound bars. I am so glad i chose the LG over the Samsung, This was such a great buy and I am so happy with the sound quality (considering the speaker size & limitations sound bars have). I have a full Bose Dolby surround sound home theater system, that makes you duck when a bullet whizzes by on the screen so I know what quality sound system sounds like. This sound bar of course doesn't compare to that and you shouldn't compare apples to oranges as they say. This little sound system has good punch on the bass, but unfortunately it's the mid range that is lacking when set to surround sound mode which sounds muffled. It is easy to set up and because it has Bluetooth connection to the bass you Don't have to fuss with wires. The Samsung bar, which had fairly good reviews, the negatives for that one was the construction quality. This is why I prefer to buy in store, because seeing, hearing and touching the product before purchasing is so important to helping to make the right purchase! It is true the Samsung bar was built in cheap quality and the sound did not match the LG's. The LG is built solid much like my Bose with no cloth covering that will tear.If you are looking for a sound bar system with good quality all around I highly recommend this one.

This sound bar is super easy to set up and sounds pretty decent. Which is a good thing since the included āSimple Manualā is super simple. Reasonable deduction led me to figuring out what the plastic things with stickers were, the elevated feet. If you want to know more about the device, like how to disable the auto power off and that there is an app for additional settings, Music Flow Bluetooth, go to the LG support page. This soundbar is limited with inputs of optical, Bluetooth and USB so any other input methods must go through your TV. The optical cable is included and is the best option for connection. If you have a recent LG TV it can use LG TV Sync over optical or Bluetooth. It was instantly recognized on my 2016 TV and controls the volume of the TV, but every time I change the speaker function to something else, it changes the TV settings to internal and then asks to turn it back when returned. Bluetooth is the same way, completely turned off the moment the function is changed, so you have to reconnect any device that was using it. The USB port allows you to plug in a thumb drive and play music directly and I was surprised at just how quick it loads MP3 files. I donāt think my PC even loads them that fast. The LCD display on the front only displays 5 characters, but provides enough info even if it requires it to scroll by, like the filename of an MP3. Itās bright enough to see in a well lit room and dims where it is barely noticeable in a dark room after 15 seconds.Though not listed on the Best Buy page, the dimensions are about the width of a 40ā TV at 35.1" x 2.3" x 3.4", this is without the extended feet, wall brackets or power cord. The power cord isnāt recessed in any way, so it makes it about 3.75ā deep and the extended feet help raise it above a thin TV plate, giving it about 0.75ā clearance making it about 3ā tall. The wall brackets are just a bit longer to allow for room to run the cables but you need your own screws to install in a wall. The subwoofer is 6.8" x 15.4" x 10.3" and only needs power, so can be hidden behind a couch or table. It has an interesting black carbon fiber laminate on the box and cloth front. Sometimes when first turning on, there is a delay of about 30 seconds for the subwoofer to kick on. Kind of a thing with anything wireless though.Sold separately, you can add the SPK8-S two channel wireless rear speakers for added surround. However, I do not have those to test out and curious as there is a setting to turn off the surround sound which allows for original sound. So by default it is filling sound to the rear speakers, but disabling it will provide the true cinema sound if available.Overall, not a bad speaker system, as it is better than most built in TV sound systems. However, I feel there's still room for improvements.
The LG SL4Y 2.1 Soundbar with wireless subwoofer is an interesting soundbar. It has some good features and some questionable features. From a sound perspective, the soundbar has four modes: Bass Boost, Cinema, ASC (Automatic Sound Control), and Standard. After trying all the sound modes for various video sources such as Netflix, Plex, Playstation Vue, Xbox One Gaming, and Bluetooth music through Pandora and Spotify, I now have it on Cinema mode exclusively. The other modes either have the spoken voice too low or is very dull in my opinion. In Cinema mode, everything sounds great. The other modes either have the spoken voice too low or is very dull in my opinion. In Cinema mode, everything sounds great. The Soundbar has a small display that tells you the volume which is great feature that other soundbars tend to overlook. The soundbar has no problem being cranked up to a loud volume and still maintain a vibrant clarity and stability. The subwoofer while fills in the ambiance and does a good job, at times feels like it could have been more. If you were expecting a home theatre quality of low frequencies, you may be disappointed but for the average home movie viewer, this will make movies much more enjoyable over your standard TV speakers. The soundbar works well in small to medium rooms but does require some cranking up of volume to fill out a large living room.I am not using a LG TV so I cannot speak to how it pairs with an LG TV nor do I have the optional surround rear speakers. Setup had a few annoying things that frustrated me out of the box. Having various Toslink cables lying around, I spent 5 minutes trying to figure out why none of them would connect to the soundbar. Apparently, LG has recessed the optical input port a bit which makes Toslink cables with larger grip points to not fit in the Optical Input port. If this is your scenario, you will be stuck using the very thin supplied optical cable by LG. So you will have to be sure that if you need another optical cable, you have to choose a low profile Toslink cable. The included wall mounts have this amazing feature which places the soundbar about half an inch away from the wall allowing me to run all the TV wires behind the soundbar. Since I do not have fancy options of running wires in-wall, the gap between the soundbar and wall allows me to just drop the wires straight down and not have to interfere with the mounting of the soundbar. The subwoofer linked up with the soundbar instantly and I was setup, mounted to the wall, and ready to watch a movie in less than 30 minutes. From a connectivity standpoint, you are very limited on connection options. This soundbar only has optical input, USB, and Bluetooth. There is no HDMI passthrough. In order to get the sound properly going to the soundbar, you may have to play around with your TV sound settings and the media device sound settings. I have noticed that Amazon FireTV Cube will only work if you choose a specific sound output, therefore before you go crazy trying to figure out if the soundbar sound is cutting out or not, make sure you play around with your media sound source options.Overall, if you are looking for an improvement over your TV speakers, this will do a wonderful job at the price point. If you were to pay more, you would gain Dolby Atmos, 3.1, 5.1 surround capabilities but that does have a significant price jump for those features.
I purchased this because it was on sale and I have an LG TV. For starters, Iām GLAD I bought this while it was on sale and not full price. To cut to the chase; spend the extra money on a home theater system (5 channel) or on a brand that is known for producing good sound quality, like Sony.If youāre a bass head like me, this isnāt the product for you. I have this in a 14x14 bedroom, and I heard decent sound when the volume was at 20+. It isnāt until you reach 24, MAYBE even 23, on āCinemaā that you begin to be able to hear your TV; thatās including voices, sound effects, and so forth.Iām using this for my bedroom and I have two small boys, which is why I didnāt want to go through the hassle of putting it back in the box and returning it. When theyāre older, Iām definitely going to invest in sound quality for a better viewing experience.Nevertheless, Iād give it a 4-Star if I didnāt have to go to 25 to be able to hear what Iām watching. However, I may be biased as I havenāt watched any action or suspenseful movies. Iāve only tried it with music (horrible, horrendous, please look elsewhere, donāt even try, itās not a joke), and shows with no laugh track.
This 2.1 soundbar is a good upgrade for the failing speakers on our TV. The sound bar and included wireless subwoofer paired automatically once they each had power. The highs were a little tinny and even adjusting the bass up to +5 did not add any noticeable bass over setting 0.The Bluetooth function of this soundbar is quite seamless. I use an iPhone and as soon as I enabled the Bluetooth on my phone and selected the LGSL4Y from available devices on my phone, audio immediately switched to streaming from my device. Streamed sound remained in sync and played well without any issues. For an entry level sound bar this does OK with movies and music whether played natively from your TV or streamed via Bluetooth on Cinema mode. The other modes seem pointless and a bit useless. If you are looking for an average entry-level sound bar and don't expect AMAZING surround sound, this could be an OK option.
Iām an audio engineer. Iāve been mixing music everyday on professional studio equipment for the last 20 years. After a bad experience with a previous soundbar, I decided to buy the top 4 sellers under $500 and compare them all. I bought the VIZIO V-Series 2.1, the LG 2.1 300W, the Sony 2.1 320W, and the Samsung HW-Q60T 5.1. Iām not interested in features, only sound quality. What all these units lack is proper stereo width. If your TV is any bigger than a 50ā, the extreme left and extreme right sounds will not match your screenās dimension. The built-in speakers on our TV have a greater stereo width, but lack in the frequency spectrum, especially the low end.The Vizio V-Series 2.1 sounded terrible. Boxy and muffled. Itās louder than your average TVās built-in sound, but not better. The LG 2.1 300W is about as good as your average TVās built-in sound, but with more bass/bottom end.The Sony 2.1 320W is a slight improvement on your average TVās built-in sound, and with a more defined low-end.The Samsung HW-Q60T 5.1 is a noticeable improvement over the other units. Itās crisp and clear, and the bass is well-defined. It has multiple audio modes to compensate for the lack of stereo width, all of which are terrible and add a fake surround effect, but in āstandardā or āadaptiveā mode it does a nice job of delivering clean and balanced audio.None of these soundbars will replace a proper surround system where the individual speakers can be placed properly around the room, but they can still be a great improvement over the built-in TV speakers.
We've had our TV for two years and didn't think it necessary to purchase any external speakers, but we've been plagued by severe volume dips during some of the shows and movies that we've watched so we finally decided that a soundbar would help. This is where our LG SL4Y came in. I have another soundbar setup in another room, so I've had experience with setting one up before. Compared to the other one, setup for this model was almost laughably easy. I had to recheck everything three times just to make sure that I hadnāt missed a step. I was pleasantly surprised that it really was so easy. One thing to note is that this soundbar only utilizes an optical input. I was pleasantly surprised that it really was so easy. One thing to note is that this soundbar only utilizes an optical input. It does make things simple, but if you happen to have a TV that doesnāt have an optical out, youāll need to look at other models. The only other input on the soundbar is a USB port for those that would like to plug in a thumb drive to play music. Considering the fact that this unit accepts Bluetooth connections, I donāt see this as something that will be of use to me, especially considering how easy it is to connect a device to this unit via Bluetooth. The soundbar has 4 sound profiles: Standard, Bass, ASC, and Cinema. Standard is probably where you want to start for tweaking the EQ to your exact preferences because it seems that the its default is really flat. The Bass profile boosts the low end (as anyone would likely expect) but in a way that makes basically everything sound muddy. We mainly use either the ASC or Cinema modes. Weāve found ourselves swapping between these two depending on what we are watching. For the most part, it seems that ASC narrows the sound while Cinema broadens things. Unfortunately, weāre still experiencing times when movie dialogue drops out, only to have the movieās score explode during the next scene. There are times when I feel that the TV speakers may have done a better job, but for the most part, I welcome how this soundbar has enhanced our viewing experience.

Iām happy to report that the LG SL4Y is a soundbar that delivers an added bonus to your viewing experience. The set up is incredibly easy. Itās a basic plug and play. The soundbar and subwoofer are two separate power cords while the soundbar uses an optical cable that plugs into your TV. There arenāt any HDMI input/outputs and there are no component inputs.Once everything is plugged in, you are ready to sit back and enjoy the plethora of sounds that come pouring out from the soundbar. As I stated earlier, this soundbar delivers an honest sound experience. Sometimes with a 2.1 soundbar, the dialogue audio gets ālostā among the sound effects and music that might be happening simultaneously compared to a 3.1 soundbar but the LG SL4Y manages a nice shared balance between all of the sounds. The SL4Y soundbar isnāt limited to just the standard sounds of cable TV either. Iām an avid gamer and part of that enjoyment is being immersed in the sounds that can compliment a game. The SL4Y provided some deep sounds and even expanded some whereas they went unnoticed on my previous soundbar for some reason.Movies are another passion of mine. Iāve played Avengers Endgame and John Wick 3 on this LG SL4Y and again, the sound is top-notch and doesnāt sound like itās coming from a tin can. The various sound options are Cinema, Standard, Bass Blast and Active Sound Control. Whatās better is that you can add rear speakers for the true surround sound experience.Looking to just play music from your device? The SL4Y allows you to connect your device via Bluetooth. I do recommend that you follow the instructions to set up the connection. Finally, the design of this soundbar is sharp and smooth with a front digital display that doesnāt distract from viewing whatever you may be watching or playing. If youāre looking for your first soundbar or trying to help that friend or family member that is building their first entertainment room, I honestly believe that the LG SL4Y is the best way to break that audio ground.
