It's not too restricted, but it's a more resistant pull than you'd get on a standard hose/bladder sort of system.That said, though, this is a super lightweight filter and very compact. It's comfortable to use, and can be attached to a hose for a more comfortable seat or for use with a gravity system.If you prefer a filter over tablets or don't love how dirty a resevoir ends up as water is cleaned, this is a great option. It is so convenient to have and reduces the volume of water we have to pack in when we know we will be by a water source. Tested the LifeStraw Peak Series Personal Water Filter Straw over this past weekend at our maple sugar farm while making repairs to the sap lines in the woods. I always carry two 1L SmartWater bottle full of clean water when I depart in the back of my tool vest and this lightweight straw of only 2.3 oz was not even noticeable in weight to add to carry in my vest. I left one full bottle behind since I now have the straw and I knew I’d run out of water before I went in for a refill at lunch but I could refill from a brook and attach my straw right to it and minimize carrying about an extra 1.5 pound or stick the straw directly in the brook and drink direct. You can also hook to a gravity water feed but I did not test that aspect. PROS: I love how it will screw right ... CONS: Need to keep bottom cover closed as you unscrew because the attachment from screw piece to insert is similar to that of a milk cap and if you continuously unscrew with it open I guestimate that it would be broken within a handful of uses then unable to cover the bottom. When sucking through the straw attached to bottle you must hold water bottle up or if sucks in the sides of the bottle in. If you continued to do this on a multiday trip on a bottle, likely the bottle would eventually crack. Overall: I would carry this LifeStraw in my day pack as a precaution if I ran out of water or on a multiday backpacking trip as a backup means of filtering if my main filtering source failed. I will also keep it in my tool vest in the sugar woods to lighten my water load as I have access to multiple brook sources but go back to sugarhouse at lunch and can refill.

I weighed it dry and got 2.32 ounces or 66 grams.This is definitely not a group water filter, but works great for one person. I carry this in my day pack just in case I need water and I'll consider using it for backpacking in the summer.
The Lifestraw does a good job filtering water but I did run across some issues. First of all there is an end cap that is difficult to remove and will get lost easily. You must have this end cap on it for storage, so I do believe this will be the biggest issue. I dropped it every time I used it. Second, the instructions say you can attach it to your hydration pack. I tried to attach it to my Mazama and my Gregory, could not do it. It does attach to a SmartWater bottle and my filtering bladder with the same end. It is kind of long, sticks up out of my backpack side pocket, so I am afraid it will fall out. Don't want to store it in my bigger compartments because it will leak and it is harder to reach. If you are hiking in an area with many water sources this device allows you to carry less water because you can just use it when you need it or keep it on your SmartWater bottle. No squeezing needed. I tried it with a Crystal Geyser bottle and that did not work, so I cut the top off my bottle and made a cup, which worked perfectly. It will also filter a large amount of water by gravity if you need it to. The instructions say to blow it out often as a back flow, which is easier than other filter's backflow process. You also need to store it with salt water when not in use for more than a month to keep the membrane wet.
