Starred Review In this enchanted and enchanting adventure, Minli, whose name means “quick thinking,” lives with her desperately poor parents at the confluence of Fruitless Mountain and the Jade River. While her mother worries and complains about their lot, her father brightens their evenings with storytelling. One day, after a goldfish salesman promises that his wares will bring good luck, Minli spends one of her only two coins in an effort to help her family. After her mother ridicules what she believes to be a foolish purchase, Minli sets out to find the Old Man of the Moon, who, it is told, may impart the true secret to good fortune. Along the way, she finds excitement, danger, humour, magic, and wisdom, and she befriends a flightless dragon, a talking fish, and other companions and helpmates in her quest. With beautiful language, Lin creates a strong, memorable heroine and a mystical land. Stories, drawn from a rich history of Chinese folktales, weave throughout her narrative, deepening the sense of both the characters and the setting and smoothly furthering the plot. Children will embrace this accessible, timeless story about the evil of greed and the joy of gratitude. Lin’s own full-colour drawings open each chapter. Grades 3-6. —Andrew Medlar —This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

A wonderful story. My daughter, who was 6yrs old at the time of reading the book, could not wait for the next evening so that we could get back into the next chapter. Full of magic, adventure and interesting characters along the way, I would highly recommend this book. We loved it, and wish the author would write more adventures of Minli and the dragon. 10 out of 10.

It’s a stocking stuffer, but I browsed through it and it seems to be an okay book.

This is a delightful book about a sweet young girl who is trying to change the fortune of her family. Intertwined are Chinese folk tales and the art work is exquisite! This was our featured book for a fourth/fifth grade book club. It would also be a great read aloud for younger children.

This book has been a favorite in our 4th grade classroom. It's a beautiful book, and I was thrilled that I could buy it at Firstbook's great price.
Chinese fantasy story that keeps the reader captivated. Makes a great read aloud and has excellent messages about thankfulness and contentment. Highly recommend!
My child read this in school a couple years ago and still talks about it. Therefore, I decided to buy it for him to have in his collection of favorite books.
This is an awesome and engaging book. My kids loved it. Out of all the read aloud books I read with my kids, this was their favorite because of all the fantastic characters and the little stories were so intricately woven into the overarching story which has such a good positive theme. We loved everything about this book.
Great book with a lesson about determination! Kids can really understand and enjoy this story within several stories and it is a chapter book! I loved reading it to my 2nd graders and they really couldn't wait to hear it!
My 11 year old daughter has been enjoying this book. Everyday she suts and tells me about what she's read. She's very engsged.
This is a book purchased for my child for school. An amazing book to read and learn about the different cultures.
