I used a Boss GT-3 for about 15 years. I could make it do whatever I needed. But the lure of easy computer based editing convinced me it was time to make the switch to the HD500X. I've had it about a month now and I am finally getting used to it. I never use the preset patches. I build a separate patch for each song from scratch. I use the amp drives for distortion. It might just take a while to learn how to do it, but it's completely worth it.

With my Variax 300, I officially have the "Dream Rig". Each of these products are great on their own, but together there's tremendous flexibility and power. It's a simple USB connection. Trying a new patch is literally a 3-click process. I unboxed, plugged in, checked the firmware, downloaded the software, registered the product, downloaded the Facebook patch bundle, browsed Line 6's Customtone patch library, and recreated my 4 go-to patches from my X3live, all in under 90 minutes. Programming/tweaking a patch via the HD Edit sw is way easier than trying to navigate thru the unit's screens. I don't think I ever touched a knob on my X3 for the 5 years I had it (other than master vol), and I doubt I'll touch these. I always edit with the sw, and then sync to the unit to store the preset. I already own a Firehawk FX unit (which is great), but I wanted something that could do more. I demoed this, the Boss GT100 and even an older Zoom model. The older Zoom would been the best if they still supported it and the Boss was a little limited even though it sounded slightly better to me so went for this since I mostly use it in an FX loop in the 4 cable method.Here'sthe pros.1. A ton of connection option. Midi, USB, XLR, 1/4 inch input and output and many more.2. The DPS allows for a ton of effect without running out of room.3. A lot of great digital effects, EQs and noise gates.4. Was on sale for 100 less than normal price.5. Great floor board for gigging with sturdy bypass switches that are color lit. I literally turn to the effect or amp I want, put it where I want in the chain, and leave it.It definitely isn't perfect, and for a lot of other applications I would say that the newer and cheaper multi effects like the POD Go, BOSS GT-1, BOSS ME-80, Zoom pedals, or Mooer stuff would be better suited to other players.If you don't get paid to make music, this is all you need. If you do, then maybe one of the fancier units would be better for you.

However, i rely on amplitube for preliminary recording and reamping for the real thing. I needed to find a floor unit that could run good sounding amp models out of a tube amplifier. I ran a GT-10 into the return section of my 6505+ for a couple of years. For those who don't know this literally bypasses the amplifiers preamp section and is now fully controlled by the GT-100. This is where the GT-100 shines, my live sound unparalleled, most guys with ENGL and mesa mark series amps are asking where I got my 6505+ modded. The firehawk etc all have XT algorithms and are positioned at casual bedroom guitarists. I wouldnt play in front of 50,000 people with those. If you are comparing it with Boss, digitech or whatever, it is a matter of choice, but 9 out of 10 people will prefer this.

But the result is you can be assured that what you hear when developing your preset will be almost exactly what the audience will hear when the output is sent direct into a PA. And because the sound is not limited by deficiencies in the cabinet it will clearly stand out in the mix with the other instruments.The only real factor to consider here is your personal knowledge and abilities. If you are a technophobe you will be sorely dissapointed. It's not as simple as a basic amp and physical pedals. You have to simulate all of that in the design of your signal chain. However, once you get the hang of it you can construct some amazing variations including dual signal paths for multiple amps or effects. There are a wide array of effects available to you that can be combined in any way you choose. Additionally, Line 6 offers some add-on packs to increase your choices of different types of amps.I'm not sure I'd recommend this to a true beginner just starting out playing electric guitar as it could be overwhelming and frustrating. But for those that have experience in modeling either in the studio or with a modeling amp, this is truly the next level up from what you've been experiencing. And boy, is it a LOT of fun!!
Pod HD 500x is an upgrade for me of pod XT live. Id had that for ten years and maybe I had the focus to learn learn learnt. Right now I have teens and life is busy, however tho I haven't out the time in with pod hd500x you can make stereo rigs (one amp on ear panned ear/side of the stage thru PA or two amps) and if you put some slight milliseconds of delay on one side of that it widens the sounds completely. MorePod HD 500x is an upgrade for me of pod XT live. Id had that for ten years and maybe I had the focus to learn learn learnt. Right now I have teens and life is busy, however tho I haven't out the time in with pod hd500x you can make stereo rigs (one amp on ear panned ear/side of the stage thru PA or two amps) and if you put some slight milliseconds of delay on one side of that it widens the sounds completely. Therefore POD HD 500x is like having 2 pod XT lives AND a looper AND better sound quality and diverse output options. However, if you don't want to read manuals OR tweak much, watch videos on how to make patches and read the manual to see if you want something so complicated and deep. In my opinion it's worth the work, though I am only starting to realise what I can do, but I don't think you need to understand everything in this tool box to get value. This was cheaper new with all the extras and plus shipping than a pod XT was 12 years ago or whenever I bought it. Consider well. Amazing tool. Great value.
