Liquitex Matte Varnish is a low viscosity fluid medium. It produces a low-sheen, non-glare surface that will intensify acrylic colours. This 100% acrylic polymer varnish is water-soluble when wet. It has good resistance to chemicals and water when dry. Liquitex Matte Varnish dries to a non-tacky hard flexible surface that is resistant to dirt. Too many coats of Matte Varnish may cause clouding of colours so one to two coats should be sufficient. Liquitex Matte Varnishes are intermixable with all the Liquitex Acrylic Colour range.

I purchased this to coat painted clay pieces. It works beautifully. I work will mica powders so my work has a shimmer and this livens up the other paint colors while still preserving the sheen. It is very easy to apply, though cleaning up takes some work (but what varnish doesn’t). A little goes a long way. Highly recommend.

Writing reviews because of the #sweepstakes prod. I use Liquitex Varnish and their Ultra Heavy Gloss Medium for doing hydroabrasion (also called water abrasion & a number of other terms) on porcelain and bone china before they are fired. Instead of shellac, wax, or modge podge which almost all ruin your brushes, or aren't heavy duty enough, or don't fire out well enough in the kiln, both the Liquitex products you can use your best brushes which help you create the best designs, by painting the varnish or medium on the dry clay surface, sometimes layering more varnish/medium to get more raised areas after you use a damp sponge to wipe away the clay in between the varnished areas, which leaves the protected areas dry and raised in relief. Most products just have so ... MoreWriting reviews because of the #sweepstakes prod. It is a water based product so it comes off my brushes easily and I can keep my best brushes in good shape. I add a little vegetable dye to it usually so I can see my designs better and how thick I have made them, but that burns out in the firing, and this product cleanly burns out in the kiln with no increase in fumes like with shellac, And unlike some of the other products used for this technique, it burns out without a trace, not leaving grungy bits that have to be cleaned off or even dremeled off. It also really doesn't smell like the shellac does. I have tried shellac, various kinds of wax-ceramic and non-ceramic, and modge podge, which was supposed to be the savior for this technique but it turns out Liquitex mediums and varnishes actually are! Only drawback is I contacted Liquitex customer support to get technical info on UV resistance & aging data for another project & they never answered.

I use this gloss medium to finish my acrylic paintings. It puts a crystal clear protective coat over them that makes the colors richer but does not change the color. I can sand it a bit if I don't want it to be glossy. I can even put a cold wax over it to create a richer oil-painting-like finish on the acrylic paintings. Also, useful for extending the Liquitex pigment.

Very happy with this product! This was my first time using a varnish, so I was worried I might mess up and ruin days of hard work. The gloss sheen on this was crystal clear, and it was amazing to see how much it livened up my painting.I would recommend using a nice big brush strictly for varnishing as that would make the process much smoother. I didn't have one and used an old brush, luckily the painting size was small so I could work very carefully to avoid glaring brush strokes.*also READ DIRECTIONS! Don't apply varnish until the paint is completely dry! I waited at least 55 hours/2 1/2 days before applying the first coat, and that was a bit earlier than the recommended time.**Something to think about: I didn't fully realize when I bought it that this varnish ... MoreVery happy with this product! Meaning, there's no need for the extra protective coat in between the paint and the varnish layer which is more convenient. Now I'm no art conservator, but I do wonder how this protective coating will hold up or if it can be repaired well since it can't be removed. Overall, I'm very happy with the results of this varnish.#sweepstakes
First I'd like to say I don't have any experience using varnish before this, I've helped apply varnish once to a family members painted wood table and it yellowed. I did tons of research to make sure the table I had hand painted an octopus on would not yellow and would be sealed from the elements. I have to say I was nervous to apply the varnish to my table, it's 3ftx2ft, and the videos explaining the product used small canvas pieces. That all being said I LOVED the Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish. It was easy to apply and looks amazing! It made the colors I used pop, and the gloss is just perfect. I was worried it would end up too shiny looking, but it's exactly what I was looking for. My only recommendation is to make sure you have the softest brush you can ... MoreFirst I'd like to say I don't have any experience using varnish before this, I've helped apply varnish once to a family members painted wood table and it yellowed. I used a synthetic soft brush I found at a hardware store and it left slight brush strokes.
I'm using the liquitex matte medium with my M. Graham acrylics and I really like it. I purchased this because M. Graham matte was sold out and this is the first medium I've tried so I can't compare. What I can say is I'm mixing it in equal amounts with my paint without seeing a noticeable drop in color shift other than what is expected with straight acrylic paint. It gives a nice, smooth lay down from the brush to the canvas. I'm getting a satin sheen once dry in my black and white paintings, not super matte, but much less glossy than straight acrylic alone. The adhesion does seem to be much stronger than acrylic paint because it is notably harder to clean off the pallet than the paints are. While on the pallet, after mixing into the paint in stays there a little while but I do see it separating after about 15 minutes but a quick remix with a pallet knife works it back in. I'm 100% satisfied with this medium!
I used to use Liquitex Satin Varnish and was happy with the satin finish. Then I bought a new bottle, applied it to a finished painting, and it was glossy, even possibly high gloss. I thought it was mislabeled, so I returned it to the store and bought another bottle of Satin...and it's glossy. SO glossy. Then I bought a bottle of Liquitex Matte varnish, and it was also glossy. So frustrating.
I do acrylic pour painting and got this as part of an experiment to try out the 4 main finishes: matte, satin, gloss, high gloss. I mostly use gloss because I love how it looks. My application process is to mix with about 40% water and apply with a folder rag. I do 4-8 thin coats, rotating 90 degrees and waiting about 2 hours between coats. After several coats I realized that I was getting streaks/swirls left in the finish, something I didn't get from any other finish. I tried to correct by gently swiping the last 2 layers, but you can see the results: more streaks.I'm going to try other application techniques since I still have nearly a full bottle of this, but I'm glad this was on a piece I knew was for this experiment. The other Liquitex varnish finishes went on easily and look great, so it's only the matte that I can't recommend.
I was looking for something I could easily brush over finished acrylic paintings as an added layer of protection, but didn't want to alter the look at all. The matte varnish is amazing and undetectable, dries clear with no sheen and intensifies the colors just a tiny bit. I use a sponge to apply it and it is very easy to wash out. Will use this on all my acrylic paintings. #sweepstakes
This was my go-to matte medium for years (I am a mixed media/collage artist). The last bottle I purchased was completely unusable -- it was more like water. Nothing adhered, it left absolutely nothing on the surface of my pieces. I have no idea what's up with this brand, but I'm switching to Utrecht's, as it's less expensive and works extremely well.
