500 Mile update

Very comfortable with a quick break in period.I've got something like 500 to 600 miles on these boots now and all of it in the temperate rain forests of Southeast Alaska. Most of the hiking is on rough muddy trails or wet slimy rock.Upside: Light yet very supportive. Comfort is excellent. So far the boots have not shown any undue wear...I'd call them excellent in that regard. Excellent traction on Muddy trail and wet rock and not too bad on ice and snow.Downside: Not water proof or even very water resistant even though they claim to be.Annoyances: The third lace hook down from the top has a tendency to not hold the lace and will have you pausing to re-lace the boots several times a day.

Had these boots since January 23 (It's Nov. now) so I can offer a good review. These are great fitting boots over-all! This was my first pair of Lowa boots (I was a Vasque wearer before) and love the fit. I have issues with my ankles so needing the extra support, with or without my brace, helps immensely. The only reason that I didn't give it 5/5 stars was the insole was NOT very good!!! (My opinion) And did not provide nearly enough cushion needed to prevent fatigue.I have worn them in all weather conditions, including snow/wet conditions and they kept my feet warm and dry!! And wearing them for extending hikes etc. has been without issue (Once I changed insoles)Again, Great boot overall!!!!

I purchased many hiking boots after reading tons of reviews and talking to fellow hikers before I found these. I could not find a pair of my beloved hiking boots (different brand than Lowa) but these Lowa's looked just as durable as my current pair (that are worn down to the bone after five years of hiking). For me, if a hiking boot doesn't feel comfortable the moment I try them on and walk around the house, I automatically return the boot. There is no break-in period for hiking boots in my mind, and these Lowa's boots are so comfy from the get go. (I do have narrow but sturdy feet). These boots are great in rocky terrain and they are waterproof. If you like a sturdy mid-boot, these may be right for you. I must also compliment customer service at Moosejaw. I did read the reviews and purchased a half-size up, which worked perfectly for me. Great company and they offer cash discounts for future purchases.

I am new to backpacking and purchased 3 pairs of boots to try out. I love the sporty boot style, but worried that I’d need more support with a heavy pack. Also want a boot that looks good so color and style make a difference for me. After trying them all on with my pack, lots of reading reviews and articles the grey green/panna Lowa’s were the easy choice. Happy to say that after many miles of backpacking it was the right choice. They now have a perfect fit to my foot, but it never felt like I was breaking them in, they were comfortable from the start. I ordered a half size larger boot based on sizing recommendations in hiking boot articles, and the 8 is a comfortable fit for my 7.5 size foot. I had never even heard of Lowa until I tried these on at REI while shopping for my shoes for my AT thru-hike. By the very end they were held together by Shoe Goo™, duct tape, and a prayer, but they made it. The treads were still mostly in tact and the core frame held up well. Lowa has a customer for life after these boots.

My go to boots
16 May 2024

This is my third pair in 10 years. I like tall boots for day hikes and activities because it holds my ankles. Some people live in their tennis shoes, I live in my Lowas. They are light weight and well made. However it is not an aggressive 10 days strenuous hike type boot, it is more relax casual short hikes ones. Only downside I found that I wear out shoe lases before I wear out boots and sage colour shoe laces are not available for replacement, for example, so I just use paracord instead. Sizing is accurate as 39 European size is exactly US8 and they give it 1/2 size towards extra sock. As I read some sizing complaints I just wanted to give my two bits. Overall it is affordable and very well made boots.

PU rubber layer leads to de-laminated soles.
29 April 2024

I'm done with Lowa boots after two pairs of Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boots have had Vibram heels separate and de-laminate due to use of PU rubber as a cushioning layer that degrades over time. They admit that the PU degrades between use and in storage. I did like the stable foundation and support they had after replacing several pairs of cheaper hiking boots that left my arches dog tired after 4 hours of hiking but having to replace a $250 boot after just a few uses is untenable. I also went through 3 pairs of Renegade Mesh Lo hiking shoes used for daily walks and hikes that would last up to 15 months before the PU layer would disintegrate well before the vibram soles would wear down. The use of the PU layer is a long standing defect in otherwise outstanding quality ... MoreI'm done with Lowa boots after two pairs of Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boots have had Vibram heels separate and de-laminate due to use of PU rubber as a cushioning layer that degrades over time. Terrible quality!!!
6 December 2023

I have had 2 pairs of lowas. The first pair were alright. They were waterproof, but shrunk by 1 full size. The toe box was way too narrow for me so I bought a new pair. This pair was terrible quality. The stitching fell apart in 3 months and even though they have a 12 month warranty, Lowa refused to repair my boots. The second pair wasn’t waterproof at all (dewy grass would soak my feet through them). Lowa’s slogan is “simply better”. I have to give it to their marketing team because their product is simply the worst boot I’ve ever owned.1. Very narrow toe box - I have wide feet. My first pair was a regular boot and my toes were crushed in them. The second pair was wide and they were still too tight for my feet.2. The leather shrinks A LOT. Both pairs shrunk by an entire size over the course of a few months even though I frequently treated the leather.3. They take a very long time to break in - by the time I broke the boots in they were falling apart4. Leather stitching falls apart and along with it the waterproofing disappears.I am a field biologist so I go through a lot of hiking boots. Trust me when I tell you DO NOT BUY THESE BOOTS. Save hundreds and buy a different boot.

Tough boots
2 August 2024

A bit tough to break in but with over 100 miles on these now and like them a lot. These have been across snow, through water, on gravel, pavement, rock scrambling, up and down some pretty ugly mountain washes around Salt Lake City, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone and Glacier National. The tread grips very well on all types of terrain and also wears well. I hiked about 26 miles in two days and never a hot spot blister or anything else. One thing to note, we hiked an 9 mile loop and it had rained the night before. The grass and weeds were dripping wet but no water puddles on the trail. After 3 hours in this stuff the leather had stopped repelling the water and the whole boot got wet...the outside. Seems the gortex liner did its job and kept the moisture at bay. reliable and comfortable
7 July 2024

I’ve had these hiking boots for about 2 years now and they are my all time favorite shoes to wear. They are extremely sturdy around the ankle area (for ankle support) and the grip is amazing. I have taken these shoes all over Latin America and they have served me so well. I was able to hike the rainbow mountain in these and I did not feel any foot pain despite wearing them for almost 12 hours. They are water proof and I have taken these on really wet hikes and have held up in the rain. The only downside is that these are slippery when you step on ice. Definitely recommend getting spikes with these. These boots are lightweight and the arch support is great. I can’t wait to take these on many more adventures.
