Three years in, looking to replace my Renegades after hundreds of miles of excellent service. Kilimanjaro, Ilinize Norte, the Inca Trail, Alta Via Uno, John Muir, Mt. Whitney, multiple Mt. Baldy (a local peak). Rugged, super comfortable, waterproof, supportive and a decent weight (size 12) if not the lightest (leather isn’t). The stitching is finally giving out here and there and I’m worried about a Bhutan trip in September and don’t want to wear new boots on that hike. I’m fairly wide footed but the regular toe box suits me fine. I wear silk under socks and medium to heavy weight calf socks over that. I don’t have any real gripes, maybe the vibrant sole would be a little stickier but then they wouldn’t hold up as long as they have. These aren’t approach shoes ... MoreThree years in, looking to replace my Renegades after hundreds of miles of excellent service. The eyelets are fussy, can’t buy any kind of laces. Some larger diameter laces won’t through the odd shaped eyelets. Small thing. Lowe laces are fine. Solid, reliable every day backpacker and hiker go to Mids for a day pack hike or a 40lb week trek in rough terrain with all the gear.

i am ordering my third pair of Lowa Renegade GTX hiking boots. Clearly, i really like them. The fit is wonderful, i don't bring camp shoes on backpacking trips anymore. Loosen the laces, put on fresh socks and they are as comfortable as slippers. They are well built and durable as well. These boots last me around 8-900 miles. Most of my hiking is off trail, in the brushy, rocky hills and streams of southern illinois, with 2-3 long backpacking trips per year. They would definitely last longer if you are a trail hiker. If they are cleaned and treated with a waterproofing wax a couple of times a year, they hold up better than any other boot I have ever owned and I've been buying hiking boots for 50 years. After a few hundred miles of rocks and woods, the stitching gets worn and the rand starts to separate, but a bit of shoe goo keeps them going for much longer. My experience is that after roughly 800 miles (about 3 years for me) the leather across the top of the forefoot starts to crack and collapse, the waterproofing goes and it's time to turn them into shop and garden boots. Still comfortable! The only downside i have found is that they get stuffy in hot weather, 80 degrees F and up. If you are a desert hiker, probably not the best choice. However, with good socks, they are plenty warm for temps down to 20 degrees F or so, at least for me.Take it from an old guy who has bought and trashed many pairs of boots, these are the best of the bunch.

I bought these boots about 10 years ago after doing a lot of research. I don't do a lot of hiking so they're still basically brand new. The tread gives me so much confidence going up and down steep inclines so no complaints there. But the comfort is non-existent. I don't know if I got a pair of defective boots, or maybe they have changed things now, but my boots have a rock hard sole. After the 22km hike from Laguna de Los Tres in Patagonia, I was literally crying in pain because my feet were so sore. I was not tired, I was just in pain from my feet. And I blame this boot. I'm surprised no one else is complaining about this. But I will say the boots are durable. My husband's Keen Targhees were in pieces after that trip and my Renegades are still going strong, but ... MoreI bought these boots about 10 years ago after doing a lot of research. This is my 5th lowa renegade. I use them for about 500 miles and then unfortunately give them away. The soles are in excellent shape but the upper begins to deteriorate. Why?? it is heavy use in waterlogged ground which tests the waterproofing to its limit. Also the hikes are in thorny areas which rip through the uppers. Still, having tried several boots on offer at REI over the past 20 years, I always go back to a tried and trustful Renegade GTX. BTW mine are 10.5 wide and sometimes I settle for any available colour. it doesn't matter because after a few hikes, they are muddy and brown. Strongly recommend this boot and normal hiking on trails will last for years. BTW my daily routine is 2-3 miles per day, sometimes extending to 4-5 miles on weekends. I am new to backpacking and purchased 3 pairs of boots to try out. I love the sporty boot style, but worried that I’d need more support with a heavy pack. Also want a boot that looks good so color and style make a difference for me. After trying them all on with my pack, lots of reading reviews and articles the grey green/panna Lowa’s were the easy choice. Happy to say that after many miles of backpacking it was the right choice. They now have a perfect fit to my foot, but it never felt like I was breaking them in, they were comfortable from the start. I ordered a half size larger boot based on sizing recommendations in hiking boot articles, and the 8 is a comfortable fit for my 7.5 size foot. Purchased these boots in summer '21 and have used heavily for 3 years as a work boot and casual hiking enthusiast. As far as hiking footwear goes, these boots fit the bill for anyone looking for something with more support than a trail runner but still relatively lightweight. Leather is soft and boot was ready to wear out of the box, which, as a poor planner, I love. I put ~65 miles on these boots out of the box carrying a 25lb pack and had no problems with blisters or hot spots. However, and this is a niche use case, if you are doing any sort of trail maintenance that involves digging tread or a lot of river crossings, i'd look for a boot with a full leather upper and a more stout sole. The weak point of these boots is the thread - the stitching began to fail ... MorePurchased these boots in summer '21 and have used heavily for 3 years as a work boot and casual hiking enthusiast. As far as hiking footwear goes, these boots fit the bill for anyone looking for something with more support than a trail runner but still relatively lightweight. The weak point of these boots is the thread - the stitching began to fail around my toes after our first week of heavy dirtwork - which, at $250, was a little frustrating. The soles also began to delaminate in the same area. After 3 years and loooooots of miles, they are now my beater boots. Still going, just waiting for the seams to fully blow out.So, if you are a backpacker or hiking enthusuaist looking for something a lil sturdier/rugged than a tennis shoe or trail runner, this is a good option. If you work in the field - it depends!
This is my third pair in 10 years. I like tall boots for day hikes and activities because it holds my ankles. Some people live in their tennis shoes, I live in my Lowas. They are light weight and well made. However it is not an aggressive 10 days strenuous hike type boot, it is more relax casual short hikes ones. Only downside I found that I wear out shoe lases before I wear out boots and sage colour shoe laces are not available for replacement, for example, so I just use paracord instead. Sizing is accurate as 39 European size is exactly US8 and they give it 1/2 size towards extra sock. As I read some sizing complaints I just wanted to give my two bits. Overall it is affordable and very well made boots.
I loved this boot - until I didn’t! I kept the boots at our cabin in north Idaho. Wore them hiking and working around our property. Not daily, and maybe some years not more than a few days a year. The soles and uppers show little wear. Today I was working to clean up some trees we had someone drop for us, and I wore the boots. When I came in after a couple of hours of work, the soles had delaminated and were breaking apart. The boots are shot. For boots I likely paid $150+ for 8 or 9 years ago, and the uppers are in great shape, I’m amazed that anyone can sell this ——. That REI, where I’ve been a member since 1974, will sell this defective product is amazing. I have had 2 pairs of lowas. The first pair were alright. They were waterproof, but shrunk by 1 full size. The toe box was way too narrow for me so I bought a new pair. This pair was terrible quality. The stitching fell apart in 3 months and even though they have a 12 month warranty, Lowa refused to repair my boots. The second pair wasn’t waterproof at all (dewy grass would soak my feet through them). Lowa’s slogan is “simply better”. I have to give it to their marketing team because their product is simply the worst boot I’ve ever owned.1. Very narrow toe box - I have wide feet. Both pairs shrunk by an entire size over the course of a few months even though I frequently treated the leather.3. They take a very long time to break in - by the time I broke the boots in they were falling apart4. Leather stitching falls apart and along with it the waterproofing disappears.I am a field biologist so I go through a lot of hiking boots. Trust me when I tell you DO NOT BUY THESE BOOTS. Save hundreds and buy a different boot.
A bit tough to break in but with over 100 miles on these now and like them a lot. These have been across snow, through water, on gravel, pavement, rock scrambling, up and down some pretty ugly mountain washes around Salt Lake City, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone and Glacier National. The tread grips very well on all types of terrain and also wears well. I hiked about 26 miles in two days and never a hot spot blister or anything else. One thing to note, we hiked an 9 mile loop and it had rained the night before. The grass and weeds were dripping wet but no water puddles on the trail. After 3 hours in this stuff the leather had stopped repelling the water and the whole boot got wet...the outside. Seems the gortex liner did its job and kept the moisture at bay.
