Interesting. I have never tried a falafel before so this was a new experience for me and I was excited about giving a go. I didn't like the process of making them it was very messy and I recommend using gloves to make the mixture in to balls or patties which ever you decide. They cooked easily in the oil. I wasn't sure on what to eat or do with them so I followed the recommendation on the box and had them in a pita bread wrap with some hommas, tabbouleh and a tiny bit of hot sauce ( not a fan of very hot foods). It tasted pretty good and was an good experience except for how messy I got making them. I tried one of them on its own and I don't think I could have continued to eat them just by themselves so the wrap was a good idea. The flavour on their own isn't strong ... MoreInteresting. Easy to use mix. I bought this for the first time to try falafels at home and was impressed. Just add water and wait and then cook up in the frypan. I actually cooked them in the oven because I was using the oven anyway and didn't want to get something else dirty! Just a light spray of olive oil and in the oven for 15min. They were a bit crunchy and probably a bit drier than if they were coated in oil but probably healthier! Served with some hummus they were delicious though. I would buy again, it's a handy mix to keep in the cupboard and throw together when needed!

Great flavour but hit and miss with texture. I really love falafel so I was really excited when I first saw these in Woolies. I have tried this product twice now and was much more impressed the second time. The first time I tried to make these I'm not sure I added the right quantity of water as it was quite runny and then funnily enough when I went to reheat my leftovers the next day they were really really dry and crumbly. However second time round was much better, the mixture formed really well and they weren't as dry or falling apart. I find you really need to eat falafel on a pita wrap with some salad and dressing/yoghurt/hummus, they are not really something you can eat by themselves. It's a great product to have in the cupboard for when you would like a 'home-cooked' convenient, healthy meal for dinner. I like the crunchy texture of the outside once you have cooked them but the inside is nice and soft. It's a very tasty chickpea, nutty flavour. The packaging is appealing and easy to read, the green colour is visually appealing and makes the product easy to spot on the shelf. I like the placement of the Macro symbol made out of the product on the front. And also love the 5-star health rating! It was relatively easy to find the product in the supermarket, once I realised it was located in the health-food aisle. The price point of the product is fantastic, it's really affordable and I have also seen it on special when makes it great value. Overall I really enjoyed tasting this product and will definitely buy the falafel mix again, the only drawback is getting the water quantity correct to make sure the mixture is perfect (likely to be user-error, rather than the products fault!).

Easy and yummy. I bought this a while ago as a pandaggedon pantry item. It had a long shelf life and is shelf stable. It is vegan and only requires boiling water to mix with it. Then I fried it as per the packet instructions. I made a falafel salad wrap using a recipe I had. These were the nicest falafels I’ve ever tasted. Not dry like they usually are when you buy them. Even my husband loved them. I will be buying this again.
Funky falafel. Woolies, thank you for my sample of this highly nutritious falafel mix. I didn't actually know what falafel was, but through the bunch, I've learnt that the main ingredient consists of chickpeas. This made me feel significantly more knowledgeable!I don't buy a lot of food from the Macro range, so was quite happy to taste test this product. I had trouble finding this sample in my local store, but the problem was quickly solved by one of the friendliest Woolies staff members I've ever seen. I will never forget the lovely lady's radiant smile. I like the earthy green colour of the sturdy cardboard box. I was pleased to note that the box was recyclable, and that the plastic bag found inside could be returned to store for RED-cycling. ♻️I found the image ... MoreFunky falafel. I will never forget the lovely lady's radiant smile. I like the earthy green colour of the sturdy cardboard box. I was pleased to note that the box was recyclable, and that the plastic bag found inside could be returned to store for RED-cycling. ♻️I found the image of the falafel mix somewhat strange. It looks like a picture of an Easter bunny. I see bunny ears, do you?It actually took ages for me to gather enough strength to try this product. I don't think I've ever eaten falafel before, so I resorted to reading the bunch products reviews, with the aim of searching for ways to serve my sample. Sadly, the more I read, the more off-putting that small dark green box sitting in the pantry became. I started to dread opening the pantry, and eventually pushed the sample towards the back of the cupboard. 'Out of sight, out of mind', I thought! However, my strong sense of duty to the bunch continued to torture and dominate me. My feeling of guilt only grew stronger as time went by. I thought about solving the problem and telling the bunch that I had changed my mind and no longer wished to try the product, but this didn't seem like the right thing to do, because I accepted a sample that another bunchee may have really enjoyed. Also, I'm not a big fan of food waste, and wasn't keen on tossing a perfectly good sample in the bin. The use by date of my sample was approaching - really fast! With great reluctance, I read the cooking instructions printed on the packaging and decided to give the falafel mix a try. In their reviews, a lot of bunchees assessed this falafel mix as 'dry'. I decided to counteract that problem by pairing the falafel with something either moist or creamy. I had all the ingredients for a creamy Caesar salad sitting in the fridge. Finally, I was ready, with an idea in mind... Upon opening the packaging, I was greeted by a lovely aroma of fragrant spices (a blend of cumin, coriander and garlic). I was pleasantly surprised! The contents of the box were similar to breadcrumbs in appearance. I followed the cooking instructions to the letter. They were easy to read and simple to follow. The picture of the cooked falafels served as a very helpful guide to someone like me, who had never cooked or consumed falafel before. Step 1: Pour falafel mix into bowl and add boiling water. Mix well and and leave for 10 minutes. The mixture looked like wet sand. It was at this point I decided the falafel was very dry. As I mixed the ingredients together, their consistency felt like overworked cake mix. The falafel mixture got harder to mix as the ingredient began to combine. Step 2: Pre-heat fry pan or deep fryer with oil to high heat. No picture needed here. Step 3: Shape mix into balls. According to the packaging, I should've made either 12 falafels or 3 medium burger patties. I was confused though, as I could not understand how the recommend number of servings per pack could possibly be 8. I'm good with figures, but this numerical riddle left me deeply perplexed. I started shaping the mix, and managed to make 6 smallish falafel patties. They felt dry to the touch. Their crumbly texture stuck to my hands a little too much for my liking, but I was determined to carry on... Step 4: Pan fry or deep fry until golden brown and pat with paper towel. After about 10 minutes, the falafels fried up beautifully, to a deliciously enticing golden colour. The downside was that we weren't particularly fond of the overpowering fragrance of cumin that seemed to fill our house. I drained the falafels on some paper towel, but felt that this step wasn't necessary. I stuck to my plan, and served the falafels with homemade Caesar salad. The creaminess of the whole egg mayo helped a lot. Without it, the falafels would've been inedible. Imagine eating herbed dry sawdust... The falafels weren't overly salty, and the mix of herbs and spices was okay, but the presence of cumin and coriander tasted overpowering to us (and we actually like fresh coriander - a lot!). On the outside, the falafels were beautifully crunchy, with a nice soft centre, but the texture was super dry. My jaw actually got quite tired from all the chewing - it was extremely hard work! I could only consume two pieces. The accompanying creamy Caesar salad helped hugely, but my lunch remained a struggle... I didn't enjoy this sample very much. Hubby's feedback was almost identical. The falafel mix has lots of credentials to boast about. It has a 5 health star rating, so it's highly nutritious. It's a great source of protein and fibre. There are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It's suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians, plus it's super easy and quick to prepare. Pleasingly, this product is made in Australia from predominantly local ingredients. However, as a dutiful bunchee, I must be honest in my review, and admit that no amount of superlatives will make me buy this product in future. The dry texture of this sample was the deciding factor for us. If you like dry sawdust with spices mixed in, then give this product a try, but I'm going to steer clear and avoid this item. It needs a major overhaul.
Easy to prepare. I'm vegan and often find myself making vegetable patties. My partner's mum gave me this mix to try and I was excited to give it a go. The obvious upside of this mix is the simplicity of preparation. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow, even for people who don't know how to cook. Personally, I decided to add some grated carrot and zucchini to the mix and opted for baking instead of pan-frying. The patties held their shape very well and turned out fine. I had them in a burger bun with loads of toppings and they made for a tasty meal. The downside for me personally is the seasoning. I think the spices used are too overpowering and if no vegetables are added to the mix, I have the feeling the patties / balls may turn out a little dry. I ... MoreEasy to prepare. Made: In Australia from at least 85% Australian IngredientsIngredients: - Kibbled chickpeas (apparently that means chopped up or ground)- Chickpea Flour- Kibbled Onion- Rice Flour - Ground spices (cumin, coriander, pepper)- Parsley- Garlic- Salt - Raising Agent (sodium carbonate)Packaging: - Recyclable cardboard box (council collection). - Clear plastic bag that is returnable to store for recycling Claims: Vegan, Vegetarian suitable, source of fibre, source of protein, no artificial colours, flavours of preservatives. Handy serving suggestion on back of boxHealth Star Rating: 5 out of 5. Although this product contains salt, I guess the quantity is not high enough for the product to lose a star. Instructions: Instructions are to be found on the BACK of the box. I would have benefited from a larger sized font. The text was very small. The instructions were simple to understand and do.... but... ... well I know I just said that the instructions were simple, but I have to confess that I messed them up. OOPSY!!!! Basically you just tip the packet contents into a bowl and stir in 200ml of boiling water, let the mixture sit for ten minutes, then either form 3-4cm balls or 10cm patties. My error arose because after a few family distractions, I completely forgot that on the FRONT of the box, it said "makes 12 falafels or 3 medium burgers". We had decided to make flat burger patties and put them into wraps with coleslaw, lettuce, a squeeze of lemon, plain unsweetened yoghurt, cucumber, tomato slices and salsa sauce. So after the ten minute wait, I set to making patties. First error... I incorrectly underestimated how wide 10cm is (should have got a ruler). They ended up about 8cm. No big drama there as we were putting them inside wraps anyway. Second error.... I didn't know how firmly to squeeze them together or how thick to make them. If I had remembered that the front of the box said THREE burgers.... I'm sure I would have done a much better job at estimating their thickness! I completely forgot it had said three. End result was that I ended up with NINE patties that weren't as thick or as wide as they should have been. LOL Silly me! That size was probably better for a wrap but I should have made less of them and had them thicker to stop them drying out as much. Last instruction was to panfry until golden brown, then pat with paper towel. I got that bit right! Obviously if they had been wider and thicker, then they would have taken a little longer to cook General: We loved this falafel mix. Not something we'd ever eaten before. A good price and if I had been concentrating (... or if there had been a reminder on the back of the box to make THREE not NINE patties)... then I should have realised they were meant to be thicker. Could have also used a note in the instructions about whether to squeeze the mixture 'firmly' or not. Most of the burgers actually stayed in shape. The last three I cooked fell apart as I overcooked them very slight and might not have squeezed them together firmly enough. (refer photo of my overcooked ones just above) Didn't really matter as we put them inside a wrap anyway. As a result of the burgers being smaller and thinner than they should have been, they were a little crunchier to eat than we would have liked. Probably depends on how deep you make your oil, how hot the oil is and the size of your patties/falafels as to how long you cook them. They didn't take very long at all. We don't usually like to shallow frying things that may absorb oil..... but we do so every now and then. Patting them with a paper towel at the end of cooking helped remove some traces of the oilsThey were very tasty and the whole family enjoyed them. Overall: Good price, very tasty, quick and (should be) easy to prepare and cook. Would definitely buy again*DON'T MAKE THEM THIS THIN IF YOU ARE MAKING FLAT PATTIES! Make fewer and fatter.
Great product but serving size a bit off? This is yet another wonderful product that would have scored full marks if only the serving size on the nutritional panel was better thought out!8 servings per box... but box makes 12 falafels or 3 burger patties. So you can have 1. 5 falafels or 0. 37 burger patties to a serve. For those of us counting calories, this is a massive pain to calculate. I made 8 falafels to make my life a little easier. The size was good (comparable to my local kebab shop) so I am concerned that splitting the mix between 12 balls as suggested would have caused them to dry out while cooking. The mix was very easy to work with. Only needed water added and no complicated steps. The texture was wonderful and the spice blend was subtle. I really ... I ate some cold in salad the following day and they held their flavour while cold, though admittedly very crumbly.
Easy and Enjoyable. So back many moons ago - at least 20 years or more - I used to buy falafel mix from the supermarket. Super easy snack and super delicious. I have bought it from time to to over the years but recently have scoured supermarket shelves to find the box containing the ingredients for felafel - no luck whatsoever and totally debated !!! Thanks so much Bunch for providing me the opportunity to russle up some yummy felafel for our pre dinner snack. They were pretty good. I did add a pinch of chilli powder to the mix to boost the flavour. We enjoyed them drizzled with natural yoghurt. Will buy again and spread the word that felafel mix is once again on Woolworths Supermarket Shelves. 9 out of 10 from me.
Not bad for an instant mix. I'm a vegetarian and a long-time falafel lover. I've eaten them at restaurants, made them from scratch, and used instant mixes like this one. This variety was pretty good. I added some salt to the mix and dry-cooked them in a nonstick skillet. They'd probably be delicious cooked in oil, but they browned up fine without. I really liked the texture - they were a little chewy, probably thanks to the chickpea ''kibble" listed in the ingredients. The flavour, even with the added salt, was pretty bland. However, they packed a great punch of protein (10g in 1/4 of a box), are low in calories (158 in 1/4 of a box), and the texture complimented the Mediterranean salad and tahini dressing I made.
