Mad Rock R3 Bouldering Crash Pad

Mad Rock R3 Crash PadThe Mad Rock R3 Crash Pad is an ideal choice for those thrilling adventures. This is a new, exclusive and innovative design that is completely different from traditional crash pads. Instead of the traditional sandwich type of large sheets of foam, this pad has been designed by taking shredded foam and packing it inside a high quality 1680 denier nylon shell that is tough and durable. As the name of this product indicates (R3), it recycles, reduces and reuses foam that would normally be disposed so it is environmentally friendly. This standard size pad has 7 different baffles that are great for a day of bouldering and performs really well on uneven surfaces. It also includes a very comfortable waist belt. Take the Mad Rock R3 Crash Pad for your next outdoor adventure and feel safe and protected.

Best first pad

New to outdoor climbing. Bought this pad and took it out to Leavenworth. It's got a big surface area, while also feeling super light. The hip straps make maneuvering around super easy and securely, if you're one of those people that like to put extra gear inside your pad while you hike, this pad is perfect for that. So happy with this pad, only thing I would want differently would be different color choice but that's pretty irrelevant.

Great as a bag and a crash pad!

This pad is a great one to have since it conforms to the ground really well due to its unique design. I took it out and it did a fine job protecting me. It also doubles as a great bag as it doesn't fold flat so there's plenty of room. The flaps also stop thinks from falling out.My favorite aspect is that there's a flap to cover the backpack straps too for when you lay it out, keeping it clean and safe.

Great concept but with flaws

The good: I love the idea of using all of the excess foam scrap for another pad rather than letting it go to waste. The pad itself, once broken in, is very comfortable to land on (from moderate heights) or to lean against a tree at the crag and hang out. This pads "backpack mode" is one of the best I've encountered as well. The bad: price and lifespan. I got this product on sale and cannot recommend anyone purchase it at full price. It has value as a specialty nook and cranny filler for certain landings, but it's just no where near as good as a solid block foam pad you can get for almost the exact same price. Both in cushioning and longevity (the shredding makes the foam lose shape faster). They do apparently sell extra foam filler to rejuvenate your pad though, so ... MoreThe good: I love the idea of using all of the excess foam scrap for another pad rather than letting it go to waste. No one asked for that though. I take good care of my gear, but the fabric shells on any quality crash pad have not failed me. Save money using recycled foam, and then pass those savings on to the customer. That's what the people want.Tl;dr: cool concept, comfortable and unique specialty pad, but not suited as a primary use pad or worth the msrp in my opinion.

Great crashpad for the crag dogs out there.
18 March 2022

Crash pad is flexible and fits well with differing surfaces heights. The backpack element and pouch are one of the best I've seen on crash pads. Doubles as a dog bed when for when your not falling off your proj.

Great pad!

This is a really good crash pad. It is less soft than some other pads so you don't fall "through" the pad onto whatever is underneath. It works well for rocky landings. It also absorbs kinetic energy really well, I am reminded of mats used in a Judo dojo.It is not gigantic, but big enough if well-placed or if you have a spotter who moves it around. That makes walking around with it quite easy.I admit that I only bought it because I am, ahem, budget-conscious and this pad got better reviews than the other pads in the price range I looked at. The environmental aspect (reused foam that would otherwise have ended in the landfill) is an awesome bonus. Madrock also offers to refoam the pad for free, should it become necessary, and claims the outer shell is the most ... MoreThis is a really good crash pad. The environmental aspect (reused foam that would otherwise have ended in the landfill) is an awesome bonus. Madrock also offers to refoam the pad for free, should it become necessary, and claims the outer shell is the most robust that is on the market, meaning it should last for many years. That makes it quite sustainable, which is an important factor for me. Obviously I haven't had the pad for long enough to try this, but time will tell.Other things I like: The flaps create a secure enclosure when the pad is closed, so you can just toss stuff in without worrying about it falling out. The shape of the pad when folded up is more rounded than most, so things you put in the pad don't get squished flat. That's great if you like taking bananas to the crag (and who doesn't?). A flap covers the shoulder and waist straps (which are way more comfortable than the ones on other pads I've carried around!) so they don't get caught when moving the pad around. All things told, I'm very glad I bought this crash pad and would buy it again.

Great product

Great product! This crash pad arrived super quick. The price was reasonable and much lower than at other outlets. I don't outdoor boulder too often but I'm excited to be taking this out soon. I'm excited for it's ability to shape to rocks and other surfaces.

Great versatility with a few minor drawbacks
25 April 2019

I've only had the chance to use this once outdoors so far, so take this with a grain of salt:The fact that this pad rolls up burrito-style makes it into a surprisingly solid backpack. I was able to fit all of my climbing gear and then some (rope, draws, harness, chalk bag, hammock, etc) and it all stayed in throughout the entire half mile trek to and from the crag. However, the little metal hooks that connect the straps come off easily, so you need to keep an eye on them or you might lose them when unstrapping the pad. Once you've got the pad on your back and have the shoulder and hip straps fastened, it fits like a good-but-not-great hiking backpack. My group was mostly lead climbing that day, so we used this as protection from falls leading up to the first ... MoreI've only had the chance to use this once outdoors so far, so take this with a grain of salt:The fact that this pad rolls up burrito-style makes it into a surprisingly solid backpack. But we also messed around and dove onto it a bunch of times, because why not, and it felt like a solid landing zone. The design doesn't make it uncomfortable to fall on like I assumed it would, so long as the beat the crap out of it when you first receive it (literally, you need to beat it with a blunt object to break up the fibers). I have no qualms about taking actual falls on this pad when we take it out bouldering this summer.

Very Convenient
26 December 2019

I bought this a few months ago and it has been a great addition! A little on the heavier side as far as pads go but the design features make up for the weight. Using it as a pack and stuffing as much gear as I want in it's taco shape has been invaluable on my excursions. Plus, its ability to form to the uneven falling surface makes my falls much safer.

Well designed pad!

This is my first bouldering pad and my purchase was based on the many review online.- Comfortable harness system: Adjustable straps and hip harness helps to secure and distribute the load evenly across shoulders and hips as this pad loaded up may weigh a bit more than others but it's no problem even on a 20 minute walk to the crag in summer up hill. You'll definitely be warmed up but in no way too tired to climb- Enclosure system: 3 buckles and 2 flaps make the pad easy to fold up and then fits all your gear - I had tarp, shoes, bucket, water and food. Maybe the tiny gap in the bottom flap enclosure could be improved in the future?- Harness system cover: Easy to deploy and fold away with 3 velcro tabs. Keeps the harness out of the dirt and stops snagging on rocks and sticks as you reposition the pad. I throw down a small tarp under the pad to further protect it.- Reused foam: I like the idea of minimising environmental impact and this reuse of foam is brilliant. Refillable too!- Protection: This pad feels good when you bail. I've only had 3 falls from about 2.5m high onto my feet and I never felt the rocks under the pad. The foam feels firm/supportive but not jarring at all. The baffle channels didn't seem to promote any ankle rolling over but a longer term test is needed to see if this continues. The baffled design drapes over the uneven surfaces smoothing them out for improved confidence to send.Great pad, would definitely by another if this one wears out.
