This is more than enough Miter saw for a hobbyist! great safety features and easy to use! The black angle guide did come damaged with some gouges in it but the guy at ACME that sold it to me contacted Makita for me and had them send a new part for me which showed up a week later! great service on both companies!!

I have been using this saw on my job sight. Over the years some 40+ years as a cabinet maker and cabinet installer I have owned maybe five different chop saws. This one by far is the best for many reasons. It cuts like butter even though the blade showed up with two carbide tips broken off of it. The blade was slightly loose as well and this affected it's performance in the beginning. Until I spoke with a service female who offered that the blade maybe was loose. She was correct and its been working beautifully ever since.

For a bare bones model this saw is fantastic and makes quick work of many jobs. I like that I can cut 4x4's with this saw as well as fragile molding without any problems. The original saw I received from ACME had a broken trigger handle (made of plastic) which rendered the saw unusable. I would say the plastic that the handle is not the sturdiest I have used. I was disappointed for sure and this is one of the reasons I dislike mail-order products; however, I left a phone message on the weekend after Christmas and they promptly returned my call on Monday and arranged for another saw to be shipped. The new saw was in perfect condition and they sent me a prepaid return label to send the broken one back.I really appreciated the great service which seems to be lacking ... MoreFor a bare bones model this saw is fantastic and makes quick work of many jobs. I’ve had this saw for a couple of months now and so far it’s been great. I wanted a 10” miter saw for the portability. I am a carpenter by trade and do a good amount of trim work. A 10” saw like this has the ability to handle about 90-95 percent of the trim that will be installed in a typical middle class home. I know this has been observed by others already, but the saw is not quiet. The best way I’ve heard/read someone describe the way it sounds it that it “starts with a bang”. But it’s accurate, light weight, well made, and reasonably priced. I’d definitely recommend this saw to a professional or DIYer.
This is a well-made, powerful yet lightweight saw, easily transported to a work site and well-suited to a small home workshop such as my own. I have other Makita power tools, and have been happy with their quality, so I was favorably inclined to the LS1040. The only shortcomings I've identified so far concern engineering and design decisions. For some reason, Makita did not set the blade to be able to cut all the way through a 1x6; there's a little remnant of about 1/8". So close; why not go all the way? (The specs give the maximum cutting length as 5-1/8" but it's actually a bit more than that.) Initially I felt this to be a major design flaw (and it's still a missed opportunity in my book), but I realized that the workaround is just to elevate your 1x6 slightly ... MoreThis is a well-made, powerful yet lightweight saw, easily transported to a work site and well-suited to a small home workshop such as my own. Initially I felt this to be a major design flaw (and it's still a missed opportunity in my book), but I realized that the workaround is just to elevate your 1x6 slightly with a 1/4" shim (making sure to clamp the work for stability). The other dimensional issue is that the vertical vise doesn't close tightly enough to clamp a 1x member without an extra pice of blocking. You may want to do this anyway to avoid vise marks on your work, but it would be nice not to have to fumble with the extra piece of blocking where a vise mark was not an issue. On the whole, however, this is a solid, compact piece of equipment that, if past experience is any indication, I hope to get years of service from. PS: Contrary to the description, it does not come with a light. 2 people found this helpful
This is a really nice saw. It seems well made with heavy gauge materials. Sturdy, very powerful, strong table and fence, and very accurate angled cuts. It does have braking when stopping, there was some discussion about that. Only four stars because the sales add clearly states "Made in the USA" and it is not. The complete saw is made in China. Also only having the two front legs for mounting on a bench or stand seems a dumb design to me. The saw starts and stops with a lot of torque that over the years might lead to cracking from stress being put only on the front legs. I modified one back leg to allow mounting on one back leg. 5 people found this helpful
Pefect, repeatable, 90 degree cuts, and very smooth cutting. Moderate noise. I got this to replace my 12" Kobalt miter, because it couldnt cut straight, i tried and tried to get the fence perfect but the motor shakes the saw so much that each cut is a little bit different, and for making 45s you cant have that. I took this Makita out of the box, didnt have to adjust anything, and i was getting perfect cuts. I did a ton of research to find the best miter saw thats out currently. I am pleased with my decision.
Purchased the Makita -LS1221 as replacement for a 20 year old 10" Ryobi "chop saw" that died mid project. The 12" Compound Makita makes me wish I had replaced the old saw many years sooner. The Makita saw is much quieter, much smoother, more accurate and much more powerful.I had some difficulty choosing among the alternative saws as there are too many. It came down to weight and my previous experience with Makita tools. This saw is lighter than comparable 12" saws and I have never had a bad Makita tool. I can't compare this to the current comparable saws from competing manufacturers as I have no experience with any other 12" compound miter. After using the Makita I have no regrets about buying this saw.
I beat the heck out of my 30+ yr old Makita miter saw and eventually put it to work cutting fiber cement siding. My 18 yr old Makita slider still works like a dream, but needed a non slider to move around to jobs. This new one has not disappointed. The excellent Makita design and quality is still there. Worked great out of the box. Put it right to work cutting some hard 2" Locust boards. Cut them like butter. Very pleased. Like the ergo handle, and easy adjustments. This one will last like my others. Considered buying a used miter saw, but people don't seem to part with their Makitas, just the yellow ones. For a little more money, I'm glad I just a I bought a new Makita. Zoro got it to me quick!
This saw comes out of the box looking like a Makita product. Compact, enough weight to stabilize it and beautiful machining. It cut perfect cross cuts and 45 deg cuts with no adjustment on my part. The bevel angle of the cuts was perfect at 90 deg. If you buy this saw, I encourge you to buy the table vise sold as an accessory. I think it is a unique accessory that will greatly improve both safety and accuracy of angle and bevel cuts.
