I have had one of these for twenty years. it just self-destructed while planing some oak. It has hundreds of hours of hard work logged. It is heavy. It is a job to switch blades. It really ought to be re-designed to take double-sided easily-replaceable blades. On the plus side, it planes over six inches in one pass. If you are a timber framer, you will need something like this a lot. I want to try the new Triton 7" (much less expensive) and see if it is a sensible replacement now that the old Makita has bit the bullet.

Excellent cutting, nice long electrical cord. Depth gauge is a bit unclear and overall pretty heavy....in fact very heavy.

This is one of the well-thought products. Kind of in between the lightest 3-1/2" to the heaviest 12" portable planners. With this, I don't have to make two single passes to cover the whole width of stocks up to 6". Parts are solid and robust. Performance-wise, this product works in all it's planning thickness options. The only thing I would have Makita done differently is the case. Would be nicer if there's an option for a poly plastic case like those with Milwaukee power tools instead of the wooden box. With the provided wooden box, you still have to be careful carrying because one misstep and drop, and this whole heavy and expensive investment might simply pop and scatter.

After trying other brands (that were far more expensive) we believe Makita dominates the timber beam planer in our opinion. As a timber shop, running 3 timber crews, putting through 20+ timber projects per year, ranging from medium sized pergolas to complete new timber barns, this line of planers has proven to be our preferred tool. The 1806 is an excellent 6" planer. We like the long planer base, the chip evacuation and the rail guide.Highly recommended!
Im an experienced woodworker at this stage. Needed a proper beast of a hand planer to work on large outdoor table (that wouldn’t fit through my thicknesser). This is like a thicknesser in your hands… it works as well as you do haha. I am very happy with the purchase. It isn’t cheap but it’s a proper machine.
This MAKITA is a BEAST of a machine. What a surprise to open the box upon arrival. This awesome hand planer came in it’s own wooden carrying and storage box along with it’s accoutrements. Well done Makita. I doubt another tool company can match the power and and speed. Cleaning up a slab of rough sawn Douglas fir this planer was and is a workhorse. It is a heavy machine and because of that it does much of the work. Working on a 12 “ x 2” x 72” slab this machine is transformative to say the least on my project. Japanese make great stuff! This purchase was also followed up with a purchase of a Makita 9403 4" x 24" Belt Sander,Belt Sander to do the finish work. Superior tools from a great company.
This planer is a handheld beast. Using it to resurface 50 year old 6” white and red oak barn boards that have too much warp, wane, and nail risk to run through my Powermatic. VERY loud have to use double ear protection.
We are building a rather large home with some rustic beams and exposed beam trusses. After ordering ruff cut cedar the wife decided they where to ruff cut so I needed a way to plan down the 8"x8"x24' ruff cut cedar beams. Even though it's not quite 8" wide with two passes it did the job. It made a lot of cedar chips. The 6"x6" beams where a piece of cake after planning the 8x8 and it was a lot cheaper then a thickness planner that could handle such capacity. The planer is great and well made but the wooden box it comes in while neat it's not very durable.
