I have been using a Bosch 240v planer for years now and decided that it was time to upgrade to a cordless model. Well I wish I'd bought this Makita years ago, I was amazed by how much timber that it was shaving off in a single pass on the oak door that I was working on. I should've bought this Makita years ago! My only criticism is the groove in the soleplate for shamfering - it is a little on the deep side. I set the depth to 0mm thinking that it would only take the burrs off the edge but it actually shamfered a good few millimeters. You can turn the depth dial down beyond zero (<0mm?) so I think I just need to practice more.

This is a really good planer, it's surprisingly quiet and has plenty of power for what I need. Although this is my first electric planer so I can't compare it to others, I'm happy with it.My only two points would be: 1) Though not included, the dust collecting bag is pretty essential to stop chippings going everywhere and to prevent dust getting inside the motor.2) The blades are almost impossible to get perfectly square to the foot. The adjustment can't be made without taking the blades fully out of the drum, so slight adjustments are time consuming. This doesn't matter for mass removal of stock but if you are trying to be accurate with the final surface levelling its better to finish with a hand plane. That's my 2 pence worth, I'm sure there are people who have ... MoreThis is a really good planer, it's surprisingly quiet and has plenty of power for what I need. It just seemed odd to me, having used hand planes which CAN be finely tuned.

Solid, reliable, and easy to use. I read reviews of it being heavy, it is a little on the heavy side, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. If you're planning very uneven surfaces, and plan to use this frequently, I'd invest in a 6.0ah battery, as you only get about 15mins of continuous use before a 3.0ah battery runs out.

Had this tool for a few years now. Works great! Great value for the price. I use it to plane lage tabletops which do not fit into my bench planer. Some skill involved to getting a flat surface. Also great for skimming 2x4s, doors that just won't fit the frame and other great stuff. Fun tool, but use with caution.
I am an experienced woodworker, and I have used hand planes for a long time and a brand corded electrical planer frequently during the last 25 years. The Makita cordless planer does a surprisingly good job, it is very powerfull for a cordless tool and can easily do what it promises. The planer arrived super sharp and produced a very nice surface that I have only seen in very fine hand planes. The design is fine and intuitive, and I could use it without having to learn how it Work. The only downside is that it uses batteries, quite quickly, and they warm up. It is going to be my favourite planer. I recommend it.
Great portable planer would highly recommend. Makes short work of hanging doors etc. I have many Makita LXT tools, so had batteries to fit. Would have been nice' though, to get a dust bag (122793-0) as part of the package as they are really a necessity.
Replaced my 50 year old Black and Decker. Extremely satisfied with this very efficient tool; not needed to change the blades yet but appears straight forward. Worth the extra to have waste collection bag to reduce dust blowing in your face, although it fills very quickly. It sucks up the power, a 6ah battery lasts about 1 hour ... you need to work fast with it!
Good tool . First time using a planer . Soon removes a lot of wood . Bought the bag separately. A bit like a chocolate fireguard . Its floppy and gets in the way . Fills up too quickly to be practical. I just aim the waste then clear up
This Planer is solid, and cuts really nicely. As I already have Makita battery equipment, this made this model an obvious choice. It's a bit on the heavy side for a small planer, but given the type of tool it is, that's in no way a bad thing. It cuts cleanly, and leaves very little in the way of tool marks on the work piece. The rebate fence supplied is very solid as well. (Sometimes these can be a bit thin and weak.)I would have given it a full 5 stars, but it didn't come with a dust bag or a connector nozzle for attaching an extractor, which I would have expected to have included with a tool of this nature. as I result I had to drop it to 4.
Way better than anticipated! We run canoe building holidays, with lots of guests of all ages. Canoe building involves a lot of planing, and sometimes the hand-planes we use can be a bit demanding for some guests, so I thought I would try the Makita 18v planer. It works with assured power, and is a joy. Within minutes, our guest was successfully planing the sides of her canoe, and very much enjoying it. I might buy another one. Runs for a surprising amount of time on a battery. It is professional, well constructed and easy to learn to use, It throws the planings out at the side with significant force. The belt is visible through a window, and looks straightforward to change, It is 20 years since we used an electric planer here, and it does appear that they have ... MoreWay better than anticipated!
