I own 5 electric grinders (4-9 inch) and was forever dragging cords around. I was tossing up between the Makita and the Ryobi as I have both battery lines. I ended up buying the Makita as well as the Ryobi in the hope that my wife wouldn't find out... (P.S. she did).Makita is far my ergonomic and easy to use than the Ryobi simply because of the way the Ryobi is designed and the switch set up. While this might not seem like a lot, when your hanging off a ladder, a roof, or alike, the handling of a tool that spins at 10,000RPM has to sit right in your hand. I found the Makita just sits right in your hand, like a 'normal' grinder, while the Ryobi just doesn't. I returned the Ryobi under the 'changed your mind' policy they have.Only regret is that I didn't buy 2 x ... MoreI own 5 electric grinders (4-9 inch) and was forever dragging cords around. NEARLY WORTHLESS.

I've have many corded tools and their cordless counterparts and for the most part I love the cordless for the power and convenience. I often leave the corded on the shelf. The grinder is completely different. It can barely function before overloading and shutting off. As you apply load, anything more than the slightest load causes a light near the top to light. If you persist in actually using it you have a second or 2 before it trips and stops. Restarting is as easy as releasing and re-engaging the switch but this constant issue makes it useless. All of my other cordless makita tools can be loaded to the point they sound like they are straining or slow down like corded tools. Not the grinder. Perhaps I have a defective one. It was a reconditioned tool and I can just imagine the fool in the shop trying all the functions and saying this one is fine. It looks and feels fine until you load it.

No deadmans switch.

There is no deadmans switch, infact the opposite, a switch that locks on. Potentially dangerous.

Underpowered tool.
29 June 2016

Bought this as a replacement for my mains powered 4 1/2 inch grinder when I burnt it out and although I own 7 other LXT range tools this is by far the worst. I should have bought another mains or 110v grinder and spent the rest of the money on a case of beer for me and my mates because now I'm going to have to buy another mains tool. This is a diy tool in a pro market. AVOID.

Useless junk
29 August 2016

These trhings are useless. You start grinding or sanding they just keep cutting out.The same thing happens with a cutting wheel, trying to cut 1/2 inch copper pipe, just keeps cutting out. I have 2 of these, and it happens with both of them. My old 188volt Dewalt, other than the lousy batteries, is so far superiour

super addition to rechargable tools
3 January 2010

This is a great addition to the cordless tool selection. I already have and love the 3 speed hammer drill, the circular saw and the reciprocating saw. They are all super and now I can cut locks, or other small tasks far from electric or without the bother of a cord. I don't believe it would be much good for fabrication as there is just too much constant use for any cordless grinder, but for small jobs super. The icing on the cake--MADE IN JAPAN, not the china junk from Milwaukee or other low quality locations like Dewalt or Bosch now use. I never owned a Makita until Milwaukee went china. All of my corded tools are Milwaukee USA. Sorry, you sell out my money goes elsewhere.
