I'm fairly new to climbing. Got trained to belay on a grigri. That's a good device obviously, but wanted something a little simpler, less clunky and more affordable. After researching options I pulled the trigger on the Mammut Smarter package. So glad I did. It is super smooth to use. Lowering the climber is super easy and the right touch to control the descent speed comes within a few tries. I am not lead certified yet, but it seems to feed rope fairly easy. Catches falls perfectly and holds effortlessly for takes. A very clean package that performs perfectly. The carabiner is easy to use, functions well and pairs perfectly with the belay device. I used the Smarter attachment for the first couple trips and then stuck it in my pack. Not necessary if you are at all ... MoreI'm fairly new to climbing. Got trained to belay on a grigri. Not necessary if you are at all attentive, but it's nice to have a little extra safety feature until you prove yourself. I'll pop it back on if my wife ever decides to learn to belay.
