Very nice sounding compact amplifier. The 0.5 Watt low-power option is very suitable for home usage while still maintaining the sound quality. Definitely for a 10 inch speaker the sound is very impressive! In 5 Watt mode it is even very loud.I like that the amplifier has an effects loop.An extra overdrive channel would have been nice.

As revered as the early 70s Marshalls (pre master volume) are, mine were very, very unreliable. I had both 100 and 50 watt heads, Top and bottom 4x12 cabs AND an 8x10 cabinet. What people forget is that most of these amps were always in the shop for everything from blown speakers, blown tubes, blown transformers etc. I had to take both heads to gigs for a while. I was a broke kid who had bought the amps with lawn cutting money. It's possible the tech at the local music store wasn't all that good. After a while I sold them and didn't look back, until recently when I started to consider another one.The current reviews about the DSL100H are all great and the current "bundle" price is excellent, lower priced than it was back then. The features are exactly right, 1/2 ... MoreAs revered as the early 70s Marshalls (pre master volume) are, mine were very, very unreliable. The features are exactly right, 1/2 power switch, reverb, and a far better clean sound than the Plexis. The cabinet isn't bad as low priced as it is. It's a very versatile amp. Mine arrived about an hour before I had to leave for my gig and I had a blast checking it out with different guitars. The next day I powered her up and after one minute, pfft. Lights on, nobody home. This has only happened with one other amp brand which will remain nameless here, since my Marshall days I have owned dozens of amps and almost never had reliability problems like I did with my MarshalIs. I really want to have one in my arsenal of about 20 amps but It must be 100% reliable.Musician's Friend will swap a new one out as they should, but I feel like I've been here before.I'll report back in a while about how the new, new amp holds up.

I have been in numerous bar cover bands and have cycled through a lot of gear, not all great stuff but I have had Peavey - 5150's, Triple X's, Ultra, Windsors, XXL, Crate - Stealths, Vintage Clubs, Marshall JCM 600, Randall RT50s, Diablo series and numerous others. Each had their own sound, but I grew up listening to 80's British Metal and this amp nails that. I play it through a Marshall MC412A. (has the Rocket 50's in it. Sounds good at low volumes but haven't pushed it yet)Easy to dial in that 80's sound. I use the gain around 4 with high gain pickups, but with more classic sounding Pickups you can use more gain. Sounds very RATT, Dokken, Saxon like. I read enough reliability issues with the JCM version of this, that I figured I would take the chance on this ... MoreI have been in numerous bar cover bands and have cycled through a lot of gear, not all great stuff but I have had Peavey - 5150's, Triple X's, Ultra, Windsors, XXL, Crate - Stealths, Vintage Clubs, Marshall JCM 600, Randall RT50s, Diablo series and numerous others. I played a JCM DSL side by side and couldn't tell much of a difference. The only thing I don't like is the effects loop. I bought mine used, so I don't know if all are like this or just mine, but when using any effects through the loop it adds highs and makes the over all sound thin. I just tweaked the pedals and run them through the front but don't use many anyways. The effects loop is the only reason I am giving this 4 instead of 5 stars.

Metal guy here, I was looking at used JCM 900s and then noticed the open box deal on these. I could not have bought a used 900 or JCM 2000 for that price so being rather skeptical I went into a GC and tried one out. Wow, way better cleans than I expected and nice crunchy sound with the gain button in. Also good raw tone on the red channel first gain stage as long as I kept the gain knob under halfway. So also being rather a cheapskate I went ahead and ordered one of the open box deals and after spending some time with the amp (using 1960B cab) I did notice that although it has a lot of gain it is not all usable as gets mushy past a certain point so decided to try boosting to get a tighter more modern metal tone out of the amp. I experimented with a distortion pedal and didn't do it for me so decided to pick up a Boss SD-1 and is a perfect match for the amp, pretty much exactly the tone I was hoping to get. Very happy with the tone and features of this amp, most amps I have owned either had a few things I did not like about them or the eq was out of whack (mostly Peaveys) so had to spend a lot of time trying to dial in the amp or eq out annoying frequencies. Well this amp has none of that, the eq controls are all in really usable range and the resonance and presence do exactly what they should and the even the reverb control is set for a reasonable range of effect and doesn't have way more than you really would use. The channel switching is really fast and quiet, which is a complaint I've always had on multi channel amps. The only thing I don't like is the 50 watt triode setting as it seemed to make the amp fuzzier or looser sounding, classic rock guys might like that but I didn't, that's just a personal preference thing though so really there isn't anything to complain about, well other than it could a bit smaller.
This head sounds great, I play it through a mx212ar speaker cabinet. I’ve also got a dsl5cr combo and a dsl100hr head and I like the sound of the 20w head the best - loads of gain in the ultra channel and classic Marshall sound with the classic gain channel cranked up. It’s extremely loud so needs an attenuator to play in a house unless you don’t have neighbours. Easily loud enough to play in a band in a small venue.
This little Marshall thinks it is bigger then life and acts and sounds like this. From nice clean to a liitle over-edged to crunch on the classic channel to full distortion on the ultra channel it does it all with ease. The EQ is very effective and three band, the reverb is OK but not exceptional. This little amp has an emulated output, supplied by Softtube, an FX loop, Aux in and a power reduction button that reduces the amps power to 0.1 Watt. With the amp comes a remote pedal to switch channels.Does it sound like a Marshall, hell yes it does in every way it can. It misses the OOMPH of a 12inch speaker, but he, this is only an 8 inch speaker and made for the bedroom noodlers who do not want to disturb the neighbours! This amp is highly recommendable to anyone ... MoreThis little Marshall thinks it is bigger then life and acts and sounds like this. You know, to get the tube/valve sound, one has to crank the amp and that can hurt the ears and upset your family and neighbours. Not any more. This amp still sounds and feels great at 80-85db in 0.1watt mode when you are at home. That is still loud for a night practice though and the amp can go as loud as 100db in the 1watt mode, which is very loud in a small room. The combo sounds surprisingly full with plenty of bass. Quality sound and feel at lower volumes.I also like the reverb, first half sounds like a mix of spring in amp and hall type and when the reverb is dimed, it sounds similar to overdriven spring in amp reverb type. The Emulated out works and sound alright but playing through the speaker is a lot more inspiring and I'd recommend micing the amp for ... MoreYou know, to get the tube/valve sound, one has to crank the amp and that can hurt the ears and upset your family and neighbours. When it comes to guitar tone for me Marshall Amplification is what I come to, the huge iconic rock guitar sound that everyone knows and loves. I had my eyes stuck on a JCM800 or the JVM series of amps, however these ranges are very expensive and I could not just splash £2500 on a halfstack at the time. That is when I discovered the DSL range of amps, the best selling range to date. The DSL series of amps can deliver all the vintage, classic and modern Marshall tones at an affordable price.I thought about having a combo however there is nothing that can beat the look of a halfstack so I jumped straight to the DSL100HR Head and the MX412AR Cab.The DSL100HR is truly one beast of a amp, with it's 2 channels containing 2 modes it can deliver all the Marshall sounds, ... MoreWhen it comes to guitar tone for me Marshall Amplification is what I come to, the huge iconic rock guitar sound that everyone knows and loves. Great device with Hi-Fi quality sound.Used it with Yerasov muffler 150 as load, amt pangaea cp100-fx as speaker simulator with some Impulse responses, boss bd-2w and pre-amplifier sl/ld from R&R Sound. And even with this many devices it produces quality sound as in single.Really like the sound it permits to produce from classic clean to very recognizable sound from father of Loud Marshall.
This amp head looks absolutely fabulous when sitting on the top of Marshall MX212AR vertical cab.If used at home, you will need an attenuator, preferably with a reactive load, to get the most out of it at low volumes.Reverb sounds to me as small hall type and goes from none to very audible. This head made in October 2019 works as intended. The volume knobs work with Emulated OUT and the sound is surprisingly good.To be honest I was not very impressed with the head running into 70/80 speakers but the cab upgrade to Celestion AType and VType really made me appreciate how good this amp is.Pedals work well in the loop as well as at the front, but expect some pedals may be noisier than others.I usually set the shared EQ for the ultra gain channel because the classic ... MoreThis amp head looks absolutely fabulous when sitting on the top of Marshall MX212AR vertical cab.If used at home, you will need an attenuator, preferably with a reactive load, to get the most out of it at low volumes.Reverb sounds to me as small hall type and goes from none to very audible. This head made in October 2019 works as intended. The volume knobs work with Emulated OUT and the sound is surprisingly good.To be honest I was not very impressed with the head running into 70/80 speakers but the cab upgrade to Celestion AType and VType really made me appreciate how good this amp is.Pedals work well in the loop as well as at the front, but expect some pedals may be noisier than others.I usually set the shared EQ for the ultra gain channel because the classic gain channel sounds good in any setting to my ears.I hope this new DSL20HR made in October 2019 will be a reliable work horse. The date of the DSL20HR on the barcode is important. Steer clear of those made early, I had 2 heads made in December 2017 and both suffered from volume knobs not working with Emulated Out, had windy popping noise (check marshallforum for the ills of the early batches) and one was repaired 2x with flashing/dark power switch, they were returned for a refund (purchased from a different vendor), but this head made in October 2019 works well, I can confirm that. Good service at DV247 . Highly recommended.
