This amp is very versatile and it can play just about any style of music. The classic gain channel has nice Marshall clean tone and then on the red channel on the classic gain channel it has that classic fat, thick JCM800 type overdriven tone and it sounds incredible. The Ultra gain channel really opens up on the overdrive and gets very even more aggresive. The green channel on the Utlra gain channel has really nice heavy, fat overdrive tone for more aggressive tone and the red channel on Ultra gain is even heavier for more metal type tones. This amp can get very heavy for metal styles if you need it too. It also takes distortion pedals, tube screamers and effects pedals very well. It comes with a nice effects loop which is great for effects pedal. I have used a chorus pedal on it and it sounded amazing through the effects loop. The footswitch that it comes with is well made and is great because you can change channels with it and also turn the effects loop on and off with it. So you can leave an effects pedal turned on but just turn off the effects loop when you want to turn it off for the time being. My only complaint about this amp is that the digital reverb on it is not very good. You have to crank the reverb way up to even start to hear it and it does not sound anything near as nice as a good reverb pedal or an amp with a nice spring reverb can generate.I would highly recommend this amp to anyone. I have played the original DSL40C and this amp(DSL40CR) sounds much better. It does not have that annoying fizzy tone when the gain is turned up like you had on the older version and the clean and overdriven tones just sound much better.

Only thing is, it sounds killer with the Celestion so if you are willing to put up with a chintzy amp with a horrible track record that sound great once you replace the speaker, this is for you!!!

Really happy with my DSL40CR amp- it’s a great upgrade to what I was playing with before and it sounds brilliant. The channels are voiced differently with varying amounts of gain and this makes it so adaptable to different musical styles. Unmistakable Marshall growl and then a roar when you crank it. The foot switch is fine for my needs - not particularly fussed about buying the 6-way pedal to have every channel on tap. It is a little heavy, but not much more than my previous amp that was loaded with a Vintage 30 speaker. No inbuilt fx, aside from reverb, but that’s not what it’s about- I use the fx loop with pedals and it’s all good. Quick delivery from PMT and the whole process was smooth from start to finish - thanks guys!!! 🤘🤘

Great Amp!!

I love this amp!! I had previously owned a DSL 40C which I traded away for a Blackstar HT series due to the fact that the 40C did not have a master volume control, which made it extremely hard to get a good tone and control the volume at the same time. Once I saw the new features on the 40CR I knew I wanted one. I was not disappointed. This amp sounds better than the original and with the addition of not only a master volume, but 2 switchable master volumes, and a switchable effects loop, this thing is a beast. No more dropping out of the mix when I switch to the clean channel, you can set the master independently for each channel. The clean voicing on the classic gain channel is absolutely pristine, while the crunch voicing sounds really similar to a JCM 800, this sounds incredible with a TS-808 pedal. The ultra gain channel is a more modern Marshall tone, OD1 has plenty of gain for rock and metal but just in case you need an insane amount of gain OD2 will push you over the edge. The tone shift button changes the character of the amp from a classic "scooped mid" sound to a more prominent midrange heavy tone, really useful for a more modern metal sound. All in all, I couldn't be happier and I haven't even gushed about the ability to switch between 20w and 40w power configuration. I added a 1x12 cabinet and its all the sound I need to be heard just fine with the rest of the band. I can't say enough good things about this amp. Since I feel like I have to say SOMETHING bad, I will say that the onboard reverb is definitely lacking, but since I use outboard effects anyway, it doesn't really affect me. Great purchase, I would definitely recommend this amp.

I got mine on sale and I'm happy with this amp. I would say this is the best amp for the money but the increasing price is slowly taking that away since not everything is going up. With a few pedals this amp can cover a lot of ground. For a combo it will fill your needs but really shines with a closed back cab with better speakers. My only gripe with the dsl line is that each model is more than slightly different. I've had the dsl 20 & dsl 100 and the first thing I noticed about the dsl40 is the presence & resonance knobs aren't as drastic, remember I'm running through the same cab. The resonance knob is particularly the weakest not having as much range as the other dsl's. To be honest I don't use this amp all the time. With pricing and quality control issues in todays crazy world the dsl40 has become my safety net. It has everything I need to get the job done and the easy individual biasing add up to a solid workhorse.

I did notice a lag when switching between A and B, as some people have mentioned. It was annoying but as time went on after a decent amount of use the lag sorta went away, maybe it needs to be broken in idk, but I was bummed about it when it was brand new. I've had it since 2017 if I remember correctly and aside from that issue this amplifier sounds insane. I used to have a JCM 900 1402 100w 2x12 and I definitely like the EL34s compared to the 6L6 and the 4 12AX7 gives it a little more gain which after like 40 mins of playing with warm tubes, it sounds incredible. It'll melt your face. Clean channel isn't too bad but as we all know, if you're interested in a marshall you're probably going for a more aggressive sound, which this does real well. Great for classic rock and metal but I'd say it's a good amp all around but if you're going for anything cleaned up, I'd probably try something else for that.

This amp head looks absolutely fabulous when sitting on the top of Marshall MX212AR vertical cab.If used at home, you will need an attenuator, preferably with a reactive load, to get the most out of it at low volumes.Reverb sounds to me as small hall type and goes from none to very audible. This head made in October 2019 works as intended. The volume knobs work with Emulated OUT and the sound is surprisingly good.To be honest I was not very impressed with the head running into 70/80 speakers but the cab upgrade to Celestion AType and VType really made me appreciate how good this amp is.Pedals work well in the loop as well as at the front, but expect some pedals may be noisier than others.I usually set the shared EQ for the ultra gain channel because the classic ... MoreThis amp head looks absolutely fabulous when sitting on the top of Marshall MX212AR vertical cab.If used at home, you will need an attenuator, preferably with a reactive load, to get the most out of it at low volumes.Reverb sounds to me as small hall type and goes from none to very audible. This head made in October 2019 works as intended. The volume knobs work with Emulated OUT and the sound is surprisingly good.To be honest I was not very impressed with the head running into 70/80 speakers but the cab upgrade to Celestion AType and VType really made me appreciate how good this amp is.Pedals work well in the loop as well as at the front, but expect some pedals may be noisier than others.I usually set the shared EQ for the ultra gain channel because the classic gain channel sounds good in any setting to my ears.I hope this new DSL20HR made in October 2019 will be a reliable work horse. The date of the DSL20HR on the barcode is important. Steer clear of those made early, I had 2 heads made in December 2017 and both suffered from volume knobs not working with Emulated Out, had windy popping noise (check marshallforum for the ills of the early batches) and one was repaired 2x with flashing/dark power switch, they were returned for a refund (purchased from a different vendor), but this head made in October 2019 works well, I can confirm that. Good service at DV247 . Highly recommended.

Marshall sound for a fair price!

With this amp, you are definitely getting the classic fiery Marshall sound from the 60's and 70's. My favorite guitar sound is Clapton in Cream, Bluesbreakers, and the Allman Brothers, and I am now completely able to recreate these legendary tones with this amp together with my Les Paul. It's very easy to use, the eq settings are extremely customizable and versatile. The mid and high ranges can be pushed way further than most would want. It definitely screams and pierces as much as you desire it to. The presence and resonance controls are wonderful. I was playing a peavy that only had post amp tubes, and the 4 preamp tubes on this are a huge step up and give the overdrive so much more shape and quality. The only downside is that the reverb on this amp is very weak. ... MoreWith this amp, you are definitely getting the classic fiery Marshall sound from the 60's and 70's. The only downside is that the reverb on this amp is very weak. Even when turned all way up its still a little less than I like to have as my standard reverb, so I have to hook my pedalboard up to achieve the sound I want, even when just sitting on the couch trying to write and practice. It's not a bad quality reverb, its just not quite enough for me.

This amp is amazing! Know this amp has 2 channels, each with2 modes, but i say it's got 4 distinct channels!!! Clean, is just what you would expect. Crunch, I have dialed in to an AC/DC sound or 70's rock if you will. OD1 is great for 80's hair metal. OD2 really does nail the current metal sound. all and all......just wow! Do yourself a favor and buy the 6 button pedal too have all switching available with ease.

This amp really shines! The clean channel gives you fat jazzy tones that turn into vintage Page/Clapton tones with the crunch button. Absolutely nails the JTM 50 sound. The OD channel starts out like a mid '70s DSL and can take you to mid '90s mosh. The cool thing is you can run your green channel thru the red master volume or red channel thru the green master.giving even more tonal possibilities
