Absolutely sophisticated looking bluetooth speaker

There's no way you go anywhere without noticing the aesthetic of this speaker if it's playing nearby. That in of itself is probably the biggest draw as the materials are top notch with leather grain pattern on a rubbery surface. The brass looking knob atop the case exudes an attention to design and this speaker has it in spades. I do not think I've ever seen a more arresting small speaker. Overall functionality is good and you can tell the designers wanted to make sure you understood what was happening with the hardware. There's a red column of lights that shows the overall charge when you first turn on the speaker and it also serves to note the volume when you're wanting to change that. Again the choice of coloration and lights serves to make the entire setup look ... MoreThere's no way you go anywhere without noticing the aesthetic of this speaker if it's playing nearby. Again the choice of coloration and lights serves to make the entire setup look high-end as compared with the normal plastic speakers you commonly see. The included IP67 rating is further evidence of attention to detail and while I personally wouldn't be taking this speaker out on the beach because I'd like to keep it looking pristine, it's obvious that it's more than capable of the jaunt to the pool or such. Sound quality is as you expect in this form factor. The heavy bass will always be lacking but the dual 2 inch drivers do their best to provide the clean auditory punch of lower registers. You won't feel it but you can still hear it fairly well. This speaker doesn't have the oomph to really fill an outdoor space with sound, I'd classify is as a medium room or personal space type speaker although it does appear to have the functionality to pair with a second one to provide stereo sound. The processor definitely keeps things ratcheted down if you try to really crank the volume (probably to prevent distortion which is in keeping with the clean sound signature). Overall love the elegant aesthetic as it is a highly functional and awesome looking speaker.

Easily out of the box, the Marshall - Emberton speaker sets itself apart with its classic Marshall styling. It has a miniature retro Marshall amp/floor monitor vibe with the box styling and gold script writing and control button. The black fence mesh grills on front and back are wrapped with a soft but durable feeling rubber trim. The speaker has a good hefty feel for the small size and will definitely stay in place wherever you sit it down to enjoy so good vibes. It comes with a simplistic design factor of using a single usb-c power input, multi directional rocker control button for power, skip, and volume, a Bluetooth connect button, and a very helpful and visible battery level led scale on top. I was expecting a good classic sound from this speaker when powered up and I was introduced with a “guitar hero” chord entry on power up and outro on power down. Very simple aesthetic but I really enjoyed this subtle touch. Now the sound continued from here and I was disappointed when connected to my phone. I was surprised at the powerful sounds produced from this somewhat small form factor speaker. I pushed the volume to the max on several different genres of music and the speaker held its own. There was dynamic vocals and a good spectrum of bass. There was little to no distortion in the sound produced at high volumes and the sound carried throughout the room. I then took the speaker poolside and was able to enjoy clear sound while enjoying the pool. This speaker is designated as water resistant but I didn’t want to test that too much even though it has a durable feel with the rubber surround and very well protected mesh grills. I really appreciate the led battery indicator so you have a feel for when its time to plug the speaker into power source. However, I used this speaker for hours at high volumes and only used three of the ten bars of battery. Overall, I am very pleased with this speaker and will carry it with me whenever I can as it is small enough to be portable without being cumbersome and powerful enough to enjoy anywhere.

The Emberton II supports Bluetooth 5.1 with rugged IP67 water (up to 3 feet) and dust resistant design. The speaker offers 360-degree sound which actually sounds pretty good. There is also an accompanying application with the Emberton. You will need to download the Marshall app that allows you set the EQ presets which include Marshall setting, Push, which is boosted bass and voice. At this time, you cannot create your own EQ setting and honestly, I did not feel the need to. I tested out the speaker on all three settings and they all sounded great, but I personally loved the Marshall setting. The music was rich, clear, loud and just perfect. This little speaker packs a might punch, it is louder and clearer in sound than some of the other known brands out there. I honestly think you need to give this a shot, you will not be disappointed.

Emberton II Review
7 November 2022

Overall the Emberton II is a very small but attractive speaker, with a stylish wire fret on front and reverse. The case has a leather-texturised surface with illuminated battery charge level and Bluetooth connection indicator. The central control button is used for volume control and track indexing, but this is clunky and non-user centric as it's not intuitive that this also serves as the On/Off button. The battery indicator is permanently illuminated when the speaker is turned on and cannot be dimmed like other models. This Bluetooth speaker is more suitable for travel than a high-fidelity home audio system, where you're happy to compromise on audio quality for convenience on the move. The speaker is missing a 3.5mm input - meaning you can only play via Bluetooth ... MoreOverall the Emberton II is a very small but attractive speaker, with a stylish wire fret on front and reverse. This Bluetooth speaker is more suitable for travel than a high-fidelity home audio system, where you're happy to compromise on audio quality for convenience on the move. The speaker is missing a 3.5mm input - meaning you can only play via Bluetooth and can't connect some audio devices such as vinyl turntables. The Marshall mobile app seems somewhat redundant for the Emberton II. Pairing on iOS is done through iPhone settings not the app. The app can only be used for selecting one of 3 predefined equaliser settings: Marshall, Push or Voice. These could have been a toggle/dials on the speaker rather than app functionality. There is no way to manually adjust bass or treble via the speaker or app, which is a drawback. The sound quality is ok at quiet levels, however there is considerable and notable distortion at higher volume. The Emberton II has limited acoustic range, missing full audio depth on most tracks across a range of genres. The bass performance is poor, especially compared to competition at this price range. For this price range, better quality Bluetooth options are available which offer superior audio performance and connectivity. The '360-degree sound' is more 'bi-directional'. Around the room, there are certainly sweeter/louder spots than others. Other speakers offer greater true '360-degree' audio experience. I would recommend a larger unit for home use due to better sound quality, appearance, feature set and connectivity for viny.

I Love Marshall gear. I already have the Stanmore and the Acton, both of which I absolutely love for both their sound and their style, and now I have the awesome little Emberton II! I've owned several portable BT speakers over the last few years and while many were anywhere from OK to Good, the Emberton is the first where I thought, this sounds GREAT! Upon receiving the box, I was struck by just how small this thing is! Upon opening the box, I found the Emberton in all it's stylish glory along with a USB-C charging cable (which I promptly put back since I have a ton of them already around the house - yay bring on universal charging cables!). Upon opening the box, I found the Emberton in all it's stylish glory along with a USB-C charging cable (which I promptly put back since I have a ton of them already around the house - yay bring on universal charging cables!). I plugged it in and the battery indicator showed that it was at about 60/70% out of the box but I wanted to go from a full charge to properly test the battery life of this thing. Once everything was charged up, I turned it on, hit the pairing button, and paired it with my iPhone 12 Pro. Within seconds I was rocking out to my testing playlist and incredibly surprised at the range of this minuscule monster of music! Does it have the chest thumping bass of my Stanmore or even my Acton, no not quite, but it does put out a heck of a lot more than any other portable speaker I've owned. I was able to 'goose' this a bit more by placing the Emberton on my desk next to the wall so that the sound could bounce off of it and give in a bit more oomph. It worked like a charm. Oh, you can download the Marshall App for three different EQ preset modes, but the 'standard' Marshall Sound is the best out of the three by far, so I'd just stick with it. I have been listening to the Emberton II for over 10 hours now and the battery indicator just hit the 80%. I have no doubt that I will get well beyond 30 hours with this thing, which is absolutely fabulous for a speaker this size. The controls on the Emberton II are easy as pie with a simple pairing button and a central multi-function "knob" which is actually more of a really short thumb-stick. Long press to turn it on, quick press for play/pause, up/down for volume, right/left for skip/back & fast forward/rewind. Easy peasy. I am sorely tempted to get another one of couple of these Embertons to try out the 'Stack' mode. With a couple in a stack you could really pump out the tunes, and with a few spread around a party, you could fill the room with music without absolutely blasting those near the speaker. I am absolutely tickled pink with the Emberton II, and I think you will be too. Style and substance at a great price. If you are looking for a great portable speaker (or speaker system), you can't go wrong with Marshall, and Emberton II is just the latest in their line of outstanding speakers.

The Marshall Emberton II Bluetooth speaker is a little gem of a speaker. It's my first Marshall product I've owned but Ive been relatively familiar with the Brand, and its well-known expertise in the music world. They've done a nice job continuing that with this consumer bluetooth speaker. The speaker's design speaks directly to the brand's heritage. It looks like a mini amp with a grilled front and back and a leatherette covering wraps the rest of the unit. The Marshall logo on the front grill and the single, multi-function button of this speaker are clad in brass which feels classical. I'm not a huge fan of gold plating on anything but I'll give them one this since it feels quite nostalgic. It's a compact speaker measuring 6.25" w x 2.5" h x 3" deep. As I mentioned, It's wrapped in a soft touch vinyl that is pebbled to look like leather. It has one, omni-directional button on top that is used for: play, pause, volume up & down, and next & previous track. Also on the top, you'll find a subtle button for pairing and then a red LED light bar that shows the battery level status. I really like only having to use a single button to control the majority of this speaker's functions. It has a 30 hour battery, it's IP67 rated for water and dust (which is great!) and it's apparently partially made from recycled materials – that's a huge plus. It is slightly customizable via the downloadable Marshall app. Once I connected it, via bluetooth 5.1, I had the opportunity to select from 3 preset equalizer options. One that heroes more bass, one that emphasizes more treble and then the "Marshall" tuned option that they feel is the best of both. I agree that the latter sounds the best. In the app, you also have the option to link two Marshall speakers together, called "stack mode." I've seen this option with several bluetooth speaker manufacturers and I think it's a great option if you own more than one Marshall portable speaker. That is really all the app offers and I really wish there were more options for customization, like a user-defined equalizer option. It's a pretty stark app but maybe they'll add more features in future updates. Sound quality is great. It packs quite a punch for being so small. But, since it has a horizontal footprint it doesn't seem to have that 360 degree sound that many other vertical speakers have. I am not complaining but just wanted to let people know. I played different genres of music and it sounded good for each. I especially liked it with classical music. Overall, it's a very competent little speaker and I look forward to using it by the pool, at the lake and in the park this summer and beyond.

Small size, great sound!

I was truly impressed by the Marshall Emberton II speaker; it really packs a punch, especially given its size (16cm length x 6.8cm height x 7.6cm depth), and the neutral casing and retro styling look fantastic (I have the cream and bronze version). I deliberately didn't read any reviews before the speaker arrived, so wasn't sure what to expect when I turned it on for the first time. I was genuinely shocked that a portable speaker could be so good: the sound quality is outstanding; crisp, rich and pure in tone, no matter what you're listening to. The casing is a sturdy, rubberised material and the metal volume/track skip button feels responsive and durable. The battery life is impressive, and it's straightforward to charge the device using the supplied USB cable. It was quick and easy to pair my mobile, but as yet, I haven't downloaded the app which I understand will allow you to allow you to use different sound presets. It is possible to link multiple Emberton II speakers together, which could be useful if people want to listen to the same music in different rooms. A friend was so impressed with the quality and design of my speaker, he bought the black version to retrofit into his classic Land Rover. The only negative (and it won't be a big deal for everyone) is that the speaker lacks an auxiliary input so you're restricted to using Bluetooth-enabled devices. Given the traditional Marshall styling and the brand's history, it would seem fitting to be able to connect older appliances such as record or cassette players - yes, we still have those at our house! Overall, it's a fantastic little speaker and I highly recommend it, whether you're looking to treat yourself or a loved one.

Small speaker, big sound!

The Marshall - Emberton II BT Portable Speaker will surprise you with its small stature and big sound. The Marshall Emberton II comes in that iconic Marshall look with the name on the front of the portable Bluetooth speaker and is wrapped in what seems to be faux leather but it still looks great with its gold lettering and control knob. It weighs about a pound and a half and supports Bluetooth 5.1. It is also rated IP67 for dust and water resistance. It also has 30 plus hours of playtime and also has a fast charge feature that will get you four hours of playtime with 20 minutes of charge. Which comes in handy when you just want to jam out without having to wait too long after forgetting to charge you Bluetooth speaker. You can also “stack” or link multiple Emberton II speakers together. I was thoroughly impressed with the Emberton II sound as I do not really expect much from Bluetooth speakers in this size range. First I noticed how clear it was even at higher volume levels. The Emberton II is said to have 360 degree sound with “True Stereophonic”. You can hear music in all directions from this speaker as opposed to other speakers in this range which you can mainly only hear music coming directly in front of the speaker. Just don’t expect much in the bass department as it is a smaller speaker. There is still a sense of clear bass but just not deep but you have to know the limitations of the speaker of course. To me that is not a deal breaker because you get a clear and loud portable speaker with that Marshall brand name.

Small, but mighty

This is a very small, very cool looking, very good sounding portable Bluetooth speaker that, in my opinion, has the coolest startup and shut down sounds that I have heard from a speaker. Both guitar riffs are just so cool and add a great touch to this speaker. The faux leather look and branded Marshall signature makes this look like a mini speaker that you would see on stage of your local band playing at your favorite small venue. This speaker preforms way better than its small statue would imply, and I am very impressed with the sound, the highs are not distorted when at full volume and the bass is deep and full. I charged the Emberton II via the USB Type C connector to full charge, which took it a few hours to fully charge and after about 30 minutes of playing ... MoreThis is a very small, very cool looking, very good sounding portable Bluetooth speaker that, in my opinion, has the coolest startup and shut down sounds that I have heard from a speaker. I charged the Emberton II via the USB Type C connector to full charge, which took it a few hours to fully charge and after about 30 minutes of playing music, the Marshall Bluetooth app (they need a better name since it just shows as “Bluetooth” in my app drawer) showed it was already down to 80%. I was very concerned that the rated 30 hours of battery life would not be achieved, but after the initial drop in power, it has lasted a full 30 hours plus some. I am going to call that a bug since it has not happened again to me. Regarding the app, besides the name that needs to be changed, it is pretty basic, but has the features that you like such as setting one of the three presets, starting stack mode, battery indicator and the ability to control the music you are listening to. Overall this is a nice sounding speaker that has a great battery life, IP67 Dust and Water-Resistant, Bluetooth 5.1, and is made with 50% recycled plastic so you can fell a little better about your purchase and helping the planet.

Surprisingly rich sound w/classic Marshall styling
14 July 2022

Several years ago I bought a Bose SoundLink Mini to use while traveling with my laptop and DAP. Say what you will about Bose or their prices, but their engineers certainly seem to know how to squeeze some pretty amazing sound out of small enclosures. Fast-forward several years and we've given a few of the larger Marshall speakers to family members as a gift...the Stanmore in particular is a favorite with its rich, room-filling audio and vintage/classical styling. My SoundLink Mini was starting to get a bit long in the tooth and wasn't holding a charge very well anymore so I decided to give Marshall's Emberton II a spin as its price, design, and features seem to be aimed squarely at the Bose SoundLink Mini line of portable speakers. In the end, I think Marshall succeeded in making a portable speaker that is worthy of your dollars and consideration and it beats the Bose in nearly every category. Marshall's signature guitar amp-style design cues give this little speaker a dash of class and "rock-n-roll" sensibilities that are admittedly pretty cool-looking as it sits on a shelf or tabletop. The all-black enclosure feels solid and rugged with its pebble-finish rubberized textured shell, big brass-colored control rocker knob/button, classic Marshall logo on the speaker grille up front, and red amp-style LED bar meter one the top indicating battery level. There is also one tiny red LED above the flush-mount Bluetooth button. Unlike some other speaker designs, the Emberton II doesn't have an "ugly backside" with ports, screws, plug-ins, or switches...the rear of the speaker simply features the same guitar amp-style grille as the front. There is a small USB-C charging port on the right side of the speaker and a VERY shallow ridge of raised rubber running around the bottom of the speaker for stability and slight surface protection. Usability is top notch but with a novel approach to the audio interface that is totally appropriate to the speaker's design. Along with looking like a guitar amp, it sounds a little like one too with power-up, power-down, and BT connection/disconnection status tones taking the form of various rising and falling guitar riffs, while the pairing tone is distinctly different, sounding a little like short bongo drumbeats. Pairing itself is effortless and is accomplished with a simple press of the pairing button on the top of the Emberton until the status tone sounds--I was connected to my iPhone 12 and Shanling DAPs inside of 5 seconds each. The red BT and battery level LEDs are dim during normal playback, but they glow brighter momentarily whenever a control is activated...this is a nice way to keep on top of the battery charge level if you go several hours or more in between futzing with the controls. The main brass-colored 4-way rocker button serves several intuitive Bluetooth functions for both speaker and playback control of the connected source: press and hold for speaker power on/off, quick-press to play/pause, tilt forward or back for volume control, tilt left/right for previous/next song skip. The volume +/- and track skip icons are also debossed around the edge of the cutout for the control rocker, but the icons are so small that they get lost within the pebble-stone texture of the speaker itself and are pretty difficult to see--nevertheless, the controls are simple enough and fairly standard for BT remote controls on other products that I doubt you'll ever forget which direction to push the rocker knob to adjust volume versus skip tracks. The design is such that the drivers and passive bass radiators are the same in the front as they are in the back. This allows pretty much anyone to hear clearly and cleanly regardless of where they are sitting around the speaker; but unlike the oddball tuning of the larger Marshall Tufton's rear-firing driver, you don't get any interference, echo, or delay between the two speakers so the soundfield is smooth and continuous. Interestingly, however, the stereo performance is therefore front-to-back rather than side-to-side--it sounds weirder than it really turns out to be in practice given how small and close together the drivers are, but a few songs with VERY pronounced L/R panning will sound mostly mono from the front or rear. Volume gets almost uncomfortably loud before it starts to unpleasantly distort, but this is a tiny portable speaker after all--it would be fine for enjoying music in a small room or for those seated in a few chairs closely encircling it at the beach/poolside, but don't expect it to reassuringly fill a whole floor of a house or back end of a cul-de-sac. However, the Emberton supports what Marshall calls "Stack Mode" which allows you to link two or more Emberton speakers together all while being driven from the same single BT source...it's a neat feature to be sure, one that is characteristic of larger party speakers that can be chained together for an even "larger" sound, but you'll have to decide whether your wallet can tolerate another Emberton in your stable just for the sake of this feature. Out-of-the-box sound is tuned with Marshall's signature EQ, but the companion Marshall app allows you to choose two other presets: Push (boosted bass & treble) and Voice (enhanced midrange). Honestly, the Marshall preset was the most pleasant, engaging, energetic, and articulate of the bunch; though I suppose the Voice preset might be useful for podcasts, audiobooks, or news broadcasts. Frankly, the Push preset sounded like it exaggerated the bass and treble at the expense of a mid cut to the point where vocals sounded hollow and strained (to my ear), but there are likely some people out there who will still appreciate this overtly v-shaped EQ. The app also provides an additional set of playback controls in case you don't want to get up and walk all the way over to the speaker itself to skip tracks or pause playback. Battery life is claimed to be more than 30 hours...I never ran it continuously that long, but several days' worth of background music still left a hefty charge on board. A 20-minute quick charge restores about 3-4 hours' worth of runtime while a full charge only takes about 2-3 hours. The speaker is designed to withstand some pretty harsh listening conditions with an impressive IP67 dust and water-resistance rating--feel free to use it by the pool or at the beach, though strangely the USB-C charging port is not protected with any kind of gasket or covering. Frankly, the speaker itself looks so nice I would be hard-pressed to knock it around in such conditions (I'd hate for some sand to work its way into that charging port), but it's nice to know it was designed to survive a rain shower or some sandy/dusty conditions for those times when you simply must have your tunes on the go. Finally, to the question I was after--does the Emberton II offer a compelling enough sound/experience to dethrone the SoundLink Mini as my go-to speaker when I want big sound in a small portable package? The answer is MOSTLY yes. On pure thumping bass *quantity* alone, I have to give a slight nod to the Bose; there was just a tiny bit more palpable oomph to the SoundLink Mini's bass vs. that of the Emberton II, even on the exaggerated Push EQ preset. BUT, the Emberton II frankly sounded MUCH better balanced, a little more full-bodied throughout all the frequency ranges, and a little livelier overall. Given that this speaker is purpose-built to provide big sound from a VERY small package, I was not expecting audiophile-level sound quality or ear-blistering output, but I do value sound quality more than quantity overall. In that respect, I think the *very* minor tradeoff in just a hair less bass output for a signature sound that is simply more pleasing and fun to listen to overall makes the Marshall Emberton II a no-brainer if you're in the market for one of these brick-sized portable speakers--definitely recommended!
