Overall:So this is absolutely a JCM 800, its is still very loud. It genuinely nails the tones of 1976 to 1984 for me. The thing with this amp, is you have to get the master volume above 5 or it is insanely bright and shrill, once you get that MV above 5 its like Judas Priest circa 1980 tones. Now that is way to loud for an apt make no mistake but what I found works is if you put a Volume box in the effects loop then you crank the MV and control the volume with the box. That said, I decided to return it as it is a little limited and I can only afford to pay on one amp currently, After receiving a shipping severely damaged SLO 100 and returning that, trying the Marshall Studio 20, I've decided to go with the SLO 30 for what I do and the volume I need as it will do ... MoreOverall:So this is absolutely a JCM 800, its is still very loud. As a Massive Marshall fan, I have always wanted a hot rodded JCM800 for ages and ages as it is the most iconic amplifiers ever made, also made famous by many of the iconic guitar players such as Slash, Zakk Wylde, Kerry King, Gary Moore, John Sykes plus more.If you really wanna get the best sound out of the 800 you have to basically CRANK IT UP TO TEN!!!! The problem is, it's a 100watt fire breathing monster and 100watts is a way too loud for smaller venues. Now with this 20watt Studio Classic head, you can now get the full JCM800 sound at acceptable levels plus if you stick your favourite overdrive pedal such as a TS808 or SD-1 in front of it you can get those iconic Hard Rock/Heavy Metal tones out of it.It also sounds great through its matching SC212 Vertical ... MoreAs a Massive Marshall fan, I have always wanted a hot rodded JCM800 for ages and ages as it is the most iconic amplifiers ever made, also made famous by many of the iconic guitar players such as Slash, Zakk Wylde, Kerry King, Gary Moore, John Sykes plus more.If you really wanna get the best sound out of the 800 you have to basically CRANK IT UP TO TEN!!!! Picked up a used SC20H and after a few hours playing I have to say yep, it is all JCM800, just on a smaller scale. Seriously, it sounds just like its bigger brothers, truly amazing, good job Marshall! I do have a little hum on the high gain pickup but only when I plug in my guitar, not sure whats up with that just yet. And yep I have brand new tubes throughout. I also find in 5 watt mode it seems a touch compressed but in 20 watt mode YOWZA, good stuff. I have been running it dry with zero effects, I cant wait to pick up a Carl Martin Headroom Reverb, I think it will take tone to the next level!

I've been waiting on Marshall do make a lower watt version of one of their bast classic amps for a LONG time. They did the silver jubilee, and the Origin fell short to (I returned mine), but now I'm able to get my 2203 sounds at lower volumes and smaller package. I A/Bed the Studio Classic to my 100 2203, and it's very close... close enough to justify buying one and using it now for the majority of my shows. My original 2203 wouldn't allow me to turn up past 2 on the volume before sound guys complained. We know that amp needs to be at least 3 to deliver. The Studio Classic is exactly what I've needed; classic Marshall tone in simple layout (I don't need switches, buttons, multi channels, etc), lighter/smaller form factor, and lower wattage. It's light, and sounds great. Not quite the beast that the 100W version is, but it's good enough for me. The main issue I have is that the effects loop is quite poorly engineered. They really should just have left it off, so people don't buy the amp expecting it to have a usable loop. When you engage the loop, the amp starts humming a little. Put a cable in the loop and it will start behaving like an antenna: the hum will increase or decrease depending on the orientation of the cable (needless to say, this doesn't happen with other amps). I've emailed Marshall and they confirmed that engaging the loop results in hum (on the bright side, with the loop disengaged, the amp is really quiet at idle, which is nice). I have a few high quality effects boxes, all of which ... MoreIt's light, and sounds great. Not quite the beast that the 100W version is, but it's good enough for me. If your looking around you may see this same review on another sight because I love the amp that much. I have always wanted a JCM 800 but didn't want to have to use an attenuator to play a 50 or 100 watt amp at the house. This amp is awesome and you'll love cranking the gain and ringing out cords. I find myself constantly ringing out G cords and just listening to its growling beauty. I want to address some comments made from others on the internet... Some argue it doesn't sound like the original 100 watt JCM 800. If you're splitting hairs there is a slight difference when playing in 5 watt mode vs 20 watt mode. 5 watt is excellent, 20 watt is the bomb! 20 watt seams to provide a little more clarity in the sound. Best sound I've ever heard! That said I still use 5 watt mode most of the time so it's still great to my ears. I'm only mentioning this slight difference because that's possibly the reason some say it's not like the 100 watt older brother. Side by side they may be right. But I would want the 100 watts of noise anyway. I bought the 2/12 cabinet that pairs with it. I play at my house and have yet to turn the master volume up to even half way because it's that loud. So playing with a band or in a club would be no sweat for this amp. This amp gives you the sounds of all the hard rock played in the 70's and 80's and 90's. Want to play zeppelin, Bad Company, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Motley, or Greenday or Zakk Wylde? This amp does them all to a T. I love it and very happy to have it in the collection. I would buy it again and again. Thank you Marshall for this amp.
Overall:I’m not much to review things, I usually just read them, but I have to say that this amp is the classic Marshall JCM 800 sound. Anyone looking at this already knows what tones they are after. This is it. Blues to hard rock and when boosted it gets into high gain territory. Cleans up nice with volume knob. I also own the mini jubilee and put both in stereo through a Marshall 1936 2x12 cab with V30s and they sing. What a perfect marriage. You can gig with it, you can rehearse with it, you can record with it, and you can get plenty of headroom still with just 20 watts. It does get plenty loud in 5 W mode. As a matter of fact it gets pretty loud a 2 on the master volume. Much louder than the same setting on my Jubilee. But you can still get great tones at ... MoreOverall:I’m not much to review things, I usually just read them, but I have to say that this amp is the classic Marshall JCM 800 sound. Overall:I’ve tried a multitude of Marshall amps through the years and never found one that worked for me. Based on others I heard I knew I would like the JCM 800 but didn’t feel like going deaf to get that great tone. But now Marshall has created a JCM 800 that makes sense for a gigging musician. Here’s why: (1) It sounds the way I’ve always felt a Marshall should sound like. (2) It sounds great at 5 watts and is loud enough at 20 watts to be heard over our hard hitting drummer. I mean for 20 watts it is stinking LOUD. And I mean that in the best possible way. And (3) It is relatively light and portable to move to gigs which matters at my age lolDon’t listen to people that tell you this amp is a one trick pony. If it’s a one trick pony that’s one hell of a trick and worth the price of admission alone!Overall I couldn’t be happier with this purchase and with zZounds as usual stellar customer service. The Marshall Studio Classic gets two devil horns up
I had a Marshall JCM 800 2205 back in the 1980s and it was a great amp. I sold it in 1993 and regret it. I bought a Marshall DSL40C about 3 years ago thinking it would be a good amp, because all of the great reviews of it. I knew it was made in Vietnam, that's why it cost a lot less than an English made Marshall. I never really got any sounds that I liked from the DSL40C. I replaced the low quality speaker with a Celestion G12M-65 Creamback, and replaced the preamp tubes with JJs, but I still didn't like it. I knew it wasn't the new speaker or the tubes, it was the amp. I just got this JCM SC20H and I love it. I first plugged it into the single Creamback in the DSL40C cabinet and it sounded great. Then I plugged it into the 2×12" Neo Creamback speakers in my Fender Twin and it sounds AWESOME. It's also twice as loud through the 2×12". Unbelievable power for an amp rated at 20 watts. It has the great tone and thump that you would expect from a Marshall. All the people that gave the DSL40C such great reviews must've never plugged into a real Marshall.
Overall:Why is the JCM 800 regarded as one of, if not to some the greatest Marshall ever made? Plug in and see. While there are few knobs you still can find a large range of classic tones. From really nice cleans to that classic Marshall gain that the 800 is known for. I will not compare originals to this 20 watt rerelease. Although the only thing I will say is that you don't need a power soak to get that classic tone, you will not go deaf getting it, yet you can overpower your drummer in the 20 watt mode. I put a Boss Super Overdrive in front of the amp and crank the drive, and out comes the tones of Ride the Lightning and Piece of Mind. Get an overdrive to go with it if you want the heavier side of classic metal. Just get one
