Bought after agonizing for months between 18- 28 & 35...I tried all of these models including the HD versions & found this one and tried it- boom- sold. The neck is absolutely amazing and comfortable to play with medium strings. Love the solid warm low- end that this beauty produces. I swapped out the metal bridge pins for ebony & seemed to warm it up a little more to perfection(at least to my ears).Finally- the custom Martin inlay logo on the headstock must be seen in person- absolutely sets this model apart!! I know it's just cosmetic- but that's the first thing everyone notices. Also- the case was specifically made for this guitar and is heavy, plush and bombproof & different from my other Martin cases. If you can find one- TRY IT!

I wanted a rosewood 000 or OM. Almost brought a used omjm a couple different times. MF has had some smoking sales lately and I missed a couple good deals because I didn't pull the trigger. When this beacame part of the FALL sale knowing the omjm and 000-28ec is based on this basic model and this model had VTS, I just did it, tossed aside self control, took the heavyest one they had and here it is. After a few self tweaks to the truss rod, lowering the saddle a couple mm, like tone wowsville, this sounds as loud and has as much bass response as my HD-28e retro. Even my wife noticed. Now if she knows and hears the difference imagine how much I and you will notice how fripping sweet this guitar sounds and plays. This sounds incredibly good and should be added to your arsenal of guitars. The neck is like butter. Adding Fishman AG series passive piezo for electronics. My top has red streaks going through it, says sitka but I've only seen Engleman red spruce like that. The VTS is amazing, Better get one of these before none are left! I think I got the next to last one.

It's now August, 6 months later, and...the sound is still a jaw-dropper every time I play. If you want a premium sounding player, that is also visually satisfying without being ostentatious, and your budget can permit, this is the one.

Powerful yet clear even tone. Excellent workmanship. Easy to play. Came with low action from the factory. A great value! VTS top makes it well worthwhile due to excellent vintage tone and resistance to changes in humidity. Took the top of my D-28 ten years to become more stable and resist changes in humidity. Only disappointment is the hardshell case provided. Doesn't match the guitar. Same case used for the "18" and "21" series of guitars. Martin should have provided the molded hardshell case used for the "28" series guitars. From experience with my D-28, this case is much more airtight and provides superior protection to changes in weather conditions. I am seriously considering purchasing a molded hardshell case from Musician's Friend.

The Martin "Special OM-28 VTS" guitar is outstanding in every way. WOW! It arrived with a perfect set-up. Its case is also a small upgrade over Martin 15 and 17 series' wood covered cases, and good enough.I contacted Martin about the VTS top on the guitar before buying. I wanted to know that if after torrefaction the top was going to continue to age, albeit much more slowly that new wood? My question was answered promptly by a customer service employee at Martin who said he asked my question to Martin's head of Instrument Design. The answer was yes, the VTS top will continue to age, very slowly. So, it is not a dead top.Derek was my sales associate and he could not have been more kind and patient. I knew this before I made my purchase. My "Special OM-28 VTS" guitar is of heirloom quality.

Just an amazing guitar
18 July 2021

Having had this now for a few months, I can safely say that this is truly a world class acoustic guitar. With an amazing setup right out of the box, this has been a joy to play since day one. It is equally at home being played fingerstyle or digging in with a pick, with the beautiful warm tone you expect from a 28-series dread. A nice surprise for me was the quality of the wood used. The top has beautiful silking throughout, with just a hint on bear claw. The grain of the rosewood is very striking. The maple binding is a striking contrast to both. If I was spec-ing out a custom shop guitar, the only thing I would have added would have been an abalone rosette, but I think I can live without that.

Martin D-28 Finest
2 August 2022

I Purchased July 6th 2022. D-28 is very easy to play from low tones to rocking jams. - I am so impressed that I am on the waiting list for Martin HD12-28 12 string. Guitar neck was set up for correct action on strings but I found that it takes 4mm wrench for any adjustments in the future. Most Martins take 5mm. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get this D-28 over to the next life.

The perfect guitar for fingerpicking
28 April 2023

I'm absolutely in love with this guitar and I believe it to be my guitar soulmate. The price was definitely a lot more than I ever wanted to spend, but it is the most beautiful sounding and most comfortable feeling guitar I ever played. It's going to stay with me till the day I die. I'm primarily a fingerpicker and this is really the perfect guitar for fingerpicking. It sounds good strummed too, but I would mostly recommend for people who do a fair amount of picking. I've only had it a couple of days, but the tone blows me away, and it's only going to sound better and better as time goes on and it opens up. The neck is the most comfortable neck I've ever played. I definitely recommend the OM-28 for fingerpickers looking for their forever guitar. Yes the price is a big pill to swallow, but when you factor in all the money lost from the endless cycle of trading in guitars & buying new ones, it's a little more tenable. In my opinion you really can't get better. There are of course more expensive Martins with more aesthetic frills, but the tone and comfort of this guitar is top notch.

I am a relative newbie to guitar. The first goal when I retired in 2016 was to learn how to play. Within one week, I lined up a guitar instructor (Jay) who I now also call my friend. With an old Ibanez acoustic in hand, I began my exciting path to becoming a musician. Following a Fender Tele purchase (thank you to my wife), then a Gibson Les Paul Trad purchase (thank you to me for working hard all my life!), I then started scouting for an acoustic upgrade. My guitar instructor directed me immediately to Martin. When I made my final selection for this incredible instrument, I placed my order online with MF. My thanks goes out to the customer service staff at MF for being so very patient with me! I need to single out Nick Sage who ended up holding my hand throughout my wait period! Thanks again Nick!Back to the guitar. It is amazing! The tone is by far the most dominating feature to this wonderful instrument. Being my first Martin, I have nothing to compare. All I can say is for anyone looking for a guitar with a pure sweet full sound, and easy to play even in a newbies hand, go for it. You will not be disappointed!
