Maxxis Shorty DH MTB WT Tyre - 3c - Tr - Black

Our pro athletes demanded a mid-spike tire capable of tackling dry, loose, blown-out corners and handling a touch of mud. This is where the Shorty comes in. Its high-volume casing makes it a more versatile choice compared to a dedicated mud spike like our Wet Scream. With large, tall, and slightly staggered side knobs, the Shorty digs deep into loose soil, delivering predictable and stable cornering even at warp speeds. Available in trail, enduro, and downhill specifications, the Shorty offers uncompromising performance. Featuring a mid-spike tread design and high-volume casing, the Shorty comes in single-ply, DoubleDown, and DH casings to suit various preferences. Select models are equipped with 3C MaxxTerra, 3C MaxxGrip, and Super Tacky compounds, ensuring optimal traction. Additionally, the Wide Trail (WT) casing specifications are optimized for 30-35mm inner width rims, providing an ideal fit for your setup. 3C MaxxTerra An intermediate compound configuration used in select mountain tires. 3C MaxxTerra is softer and offers more traction than 3C MaxxSpeed, yet provides better treadwear and less rolling resistance than MaxxGrip. DH Casing Two layers of casing material are used from bead to bead, providing additional protection and sidewall stiffness for downhill applications.

This tire was incredibly hard to mount on a new Mavic Deemax. I mounted it once, pulled the bead off one side to add sealant but couldn't mount it the second time. I have mounted many tires over my 30 years of mountain biking experience and I have never had a tire this difficult to mount. I actually bought a Minion DHF and mounted that tire instead.

I first purchased the Shorty two seasons ago (2014) as a replacement for the Schwalbe Magic Mary. I was a fan of the magic mary but wanted something in the rear with a better braking profile. I started on the regular Shorty, and have now switched to the Wide Trail (WT) spacing now that I am running 30+mm wide rims. When it comes to tires, performance and longevity seem to be the name of the game. The shorty is Maxxis' new take on a chopped mud spike derived from its big brother the Wet Scream , similar to the likes of what Schwalbe did for the Magic Mary due to how many team riders were chopping their Dirty Dans. And while the shorty achieves this in large strides it has totally blown me away with how versatile a tire it actually is; the wide spacing between knobs fling themselves clean with ease and still hold grip without feeling like there are any dead spots, all while cutting an edge in turns. I've been riding the shorty for two season now, primarily as a rear tire (though it's still a stellar front tread) paired with a Mary in the front, especially for the unpredictable conditions in the PNW it's hard to beat this gravity oriented combo. The Shorty really can do it all, it may not be the fastest rolling tire but if going downhill is your lust than the Shorty may be for you.

Awesome / best rear tire! Just wearing too fast...

I bought this Shorty 2.5 to replace a worn out Aggressor and wow! What a difference it made with braking and cornering! This tire grips great on the Southern California /decomposed granite, loose over hard surface trails.Cons(?)I would give 5 stars if the tire hasn't worn out so fast. Still grippy but I have to replace it after about 200 miles of enduro trail riding which feel low to me.The grip comes with a price: fast wear and higher rolling resistance.I would still recommend this tire for anyone needing more confidence on the trails.

Confidence for Heavy Riders on Loose Ground
31 May 2022

Still the best for heavy riders on the front when hard cornering with loose gravel on hard packed trails. Rolling resistance is not as good as some and you can feel the added weight. Wet weather they are predictable to the limit……they are still one of the best.

Going full-moto for softer conditions

Trying these out on front and rear right now. Definitely lots of rolling resistance but also lots of lateral traction. I am discovering that they aren't a terrific rear tire, especially when it is wet, as they like to just slide sideways when climbing up obstacles. Excellent front tire, however, and I plan to use these even in dry conditions. Will probably go back to a DHR2 in the rear with this up front as my daily-driver setup for Oregon riding.

Grip
7 August 2019

I'm using this as a front tire in the North east, and it's great. Tons of grip. Rolls quick and sheds mud. Cornering grip is very high. Doesn't weigh a ton and set up tubeless extremely easy with just a floor pump (although the rim has something to do with that as well). And it grips in the corners. For me, it's pretty much the perfect front tire.

Incredibly Long Lasting
29 September 2017

I have had this tire for the last half of the season and it has seen pretty much no tread wear. Its not like I brake mostly with the rear tire either, this thing is incredibly grippy *and* long lasting. I just ran into a cyclist at the local trails who was running it as a rear tire and had 40% tread wear after 2 summers of use! Incredible.-Jubal

I got these for the wet PNW winters and spring time riding. Amazing grip in the mud and soft dirt. OK grip on the rocks and blue groove. Not as versatile as the Minion, but it isn't supposed to be. But beware, these tires are heavy. Like Mama June before the meth heavy.

Maxxis Shorty 2.5 3c 29
28 April 2018

Was very happy with the grip of my previous Magic Mary until I got this. The grip is unreal and inspires confidence. I use on the front with DHR2 on the back for now, might change to DHF F&R for summer use.Sizing as usual for maxxis 2.5 similar to other 2.3 but it is a chunky tire.I’ve also been using the WT version on 25mm rims without any issues. They are pretty much identical to the non WT versions.

Labled as 2.4", the tires measure just a hair over 2.2" on a spank spoon 32 hoop in the 3c model. I like smaller volume tires than most would prefer on dh bikes so this was not an issue for me. This tire was likely made to compete with the magic marry. The magic marry in the DH casing measures over 2.5" on my same rim though its labled as 2.35". I ran magic marrys in all versions from the bike park, tubeless ready, to the DH casing and have never been satisfied with them. I have also ran the kenda nexcavators off and on for the last 3 years and have had my best riding in the worst conditions on the 2.35 nexcator with rsr. That tire has a smaller casing as well, measuring 2.25 on the same hoop. To me the SHORTY is like a mix of the two. Its got the aggressive lean angle of a smaller volume tire with the high traction/fast clearing of cut spikes that ate up every off camber turn, mud hole, blown out catch berm, rutted out chute, wet rock gardens, roots, hucks to flat, hucks to rock gardens, hucks to hucks, you get it...if you think a smaller tire casing with strong sticky mid lenth spikes would suit your riding this is the tire for you.
