I really liked the convenience of this pump and being able to use it in the car or on the go with an outlet. Once this unit is plugged in you connect the bottle to the pump that goes over your breasts, then you connect the air tube to the machine and to the pumps (you can do one at a time, but I would suggest both at the same time or you may over produce on one side or under produce milk and end up lopsided!). The nipple covers it comes with didn't fit so I had to buy a new piece but the parts are to buy in every store which is convenient. I've heard great reviews of this brand and I wasn't disappointed! Once this unit is plugged in you connect the bottle to the pump that goes over your breasts, then you connect the air tube to the machine and to the pumps (you can do one at a time, but I would suggest both at the same time or you may over produce on one side or under produce milk and end up lopsided!). One the tubes are connect you place the cups over your breasts and hold down trying to get a good seal. Now the tricky part if you don't have a hands free bra to place the pumps in is that you are stuck holding them on you the entire time. So I highly suggest getting the hands free pumping bra! Then once you turn it on, you start with the lowest suction possible which is level 1. The first type of suction is quick and fast (you can hear the air intake to know), this helps to mimick the suction of a newborn latch to help get milk production going, after a few minutes it switches to the level one suction. Once you have pumped and feel you have no more milk you turn the dial of suction to as low as it goes without turning it off which will change the mode to let down mode. Voila, you have done it. Now if you find that the first level is not sufficient enough or you have used it a few times and are used to the suction (believe me it takes a bit to get used to the pump and the suction on your nipples, power through and put on a movie or music to get through it, you can do it), then you can move up the levels to whichever one feels better or most efficient. Now the bottles the pump come with don't allow you to collect more than 4 Oz. so you have to keep an eye on them for when they fill, you can place the milk collected in milk collection bags to store in fridge (24 hours) or freezer. This unit comes with some samples of collection bags to use for the first time, so you may have to buy some more if you plan on keeping a supply! Or you can place the milk directly in a bottle for a feed. Now when you first start pumping or breastfeeding or a combo, don't be discouraged if you don't collect a lot at first. You're breasts produce milk on demand, meaning that the more you do it (frequency and length) the more you will produce. This also goes hand in hand with your body having the energy to produce it, meaning you need to keep yourself hydrated and fed too! So don't neglect yourself and try not to be discouraged! Something else is that once you first have a baby you will produce collustrum which is a more yellow thicker substance, otherwise known as liquid gold. This is amazing stuff for baby and packed full od nutrients snd what not needed by baby. So don't be surprised if the first time you use it, that's what you get in the bottle. It doesn't last forever so try and get as much as you can so baby has a solid start with it :). Finally you may notice that if you breastfeed or your nips aren't used to this that they get raw, chapped or even bleed. Sometimes you can get a little pink or red milk pulled. Don't worry, and dont think you have to throw it out. This unit is amazing for first time users and is very versatile, but you still need to store your accessories safely so you don't have to replace parts too often or ever. Keep the air tube in a zip lock bag. Clean the cups and disinfect after every use, don't put the bottles through the dishwasher. You will be fine, you got this. A final note is to check with any health insurance or benefits you have Most should cover the entire cost of this unit except for a few dollars. Most GP doctors or obstetricians can write a note to provide you stating the need of a breast pump. P.S. for any men or partners or family members reading this, you can see there's some work in pumping, and lots that go into it whether they are creating a supply, on demand feeding or combo feeding. Once a bottle is finished, you take it from momma and you go feed the baby. Give the lady a break! P.P.S. If you can't create a supply for any reason or feel unsure, talk to a your doctor or a lactation consultant or find some mom groups to speak to. Many woman also donate if they over supply and are happy to help or perhaps you would also like to! Good luck!

Absolutely TRASH! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PUMP!

I've experienced several clogged duct EVERY WEEK and am on my 2nd course of antibiotics for Mastitis. I tried 4 different flange sizes thinking the pain and clogs were user error. Nothing helped! I am an exclusive pumper so doing this horribly painful thing every 2 to 3 hours has been super draining and giving me anxiety!! Which is also tanking my supply im sure! I finally found out online through Aeroflow breast pumps that my insurance would approve a different 2nd pump and ordered the Zomee Z2. It has only been 3 days since receiving the Zomee and already I have more than DOUBLED my output and my nipples are FINALLY starting to heal after weeks of this horrible pump!! I'm now easily pumping 3 to 4oz from both breasts in under 15 mins. I cannot believe this Medela pump can cost almost $200 and it is complete trash! No timer, no display, one tube connects both and the suction is way too strong with no way of telling what level your at. The Zomee Z2 is actually portable with a Rechargeable battery, has 2 tube outputs and is much much gentler with several higher levels if needed. For the same price as this trash pump please dont buy this and go to aeroflowbreastpumps.com and get approved for a Zomee Z2 instead!

I wish I read more of the 1 star reviews before I chose this breast pump. First, the new design of the bottles is very inconvenient to hold. Unless I’m wearing a pumping bra 24/7 or every time I have to pump then it’s not easy to hold at all. Second, the new membrane design is SO particular, if it’s off by a millimeter then the suction barely works and I’m not producing any milk. There have been several times when I had to stop pumping and adjust the membrane, and restart because it wasn’t working right. And lastly, I can not see how many ounces I’ve pumped because the numbers on the bottle are clear and you can not read them when there is milk in the bottles. I can barely see them when the bottles are empty but especially after I’ve pumped I have no idea how much ... MoreI wish I read more of the 1 star reviews before I chose this breast pump. I’ve used the older medela pump a few years ago with my last baby and that pump was so much better, I’m highly disappointed. Pumping is stressful enough and using this pump is so frustrating I just want to cry.The only reason I gave 2 stars is because it’s relatively quiet which is nice.

I hate this pump and ESPECIALLY the accessories
14 May 2023

Got this pump through insurance just because I had a Medela the first time around and it's the brand my hospital uses. I hate this pump! The pump itself is loud, but I mainly take issue with the accessories. First red flag was when none of the bottles came with nipple pieces to actually feed my child what I had pumped. The white connector between the flanges and the bottles are so heavy that they always tip over-spilling that precious liquid gold. They also leak if they are not perfectly in place. Even the slightest angle will cause this stupid thing to leak milk all over you for 15 minutes before you've noticed because it's 2:00 AM and you're exhausted. Talk about heartbreak... I will NEVER recommend this pump to anyone I even remotely like. Get yourself a Spectra. ... MoreGot this pump through insurance just because I had a Medela the first time around and it's the brand my hospital uses. I hate this pump! If I weren't stuck with this stupid pump, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Not a fan, too much effort required
11 July 2022

While I'm a big fan of Medela as a company, I do not like this pump. I was using it as directed but the connector parts were not draining me. I have a huge oversupply because I gave birth to twin boys about 4 months ago and they spent a few weeks in the NICU while I built up a supply. The connector parts that the pump came with just weren't effective at getting out the milk. So I started to use the connector parts they gave me at the hospital -- only to find that those parts are not compatible with this pump when I had an accident and damaged the pump. The pump sucked up milk through the tubing and into the machine. Medela was wonderful and replaced the pump for me ASAP free of charge. The pump sucked up milk through the tubing and into the machine. Medela was wonderful and replaced the pump for me ASAP free of charge. I was very worried because I'm extremely prone to clogs which are incredibly painful and labor intensive to work out. So I bought the medela hand pump which honestly works better than this pump does.I've since only been using the connector parts designed for the machine but I have to pump 6-8 times a day and every pump session takes at least 45 minutes to an hour. I have to deeply massage my breast tissue to get the milk moving enough through the pump. And then I have to turn off the pump and hand express for up to 20 minutes after just to get everything out! I'm so exhausted, honestly. I'm up for at least 4 hours in the night for my night pumps and feeding the babies. Even when I breastfeed the boys, I still have to pump after for 30-45 minutes. My hands are weak from hand expressing and massaging. I have a horrible case of postpartum carpal tunnel. I didn't have this problem to this extent when I was using the other connector parts but I don't want to break the machine again. I absolutely cannot leave milk undrained or I will end up inflamed and in miserable pain, so I really have no choice but to put this much effort into pumping. This pump might be fine for someone with a more reasonable supply but as someone who is producing almost a gallon every day (not including the actual breastfeeding), I'm both tired, sore, and a bit hopeless at this point.

Power Button Problem
9 November 2022

This pump has power issues. I didn’t even have it for two weeks before the power button stopped working on the first press. I have to press the power button at least 4 times before it starts. It feels like playing Russian roulette. Is it going to start now? I don’t know! I don’t use the battery pack, it’s always plugged into the wall. The pump also turned off by itself just shy of a 30-minute session where I was trying to ease a blocked duct. This pump is also louder than I like. It sounds like a metronome the way it clicks. I got this as a quick replacement after the power button on my Medela Sonata stopped working after 1.7 years of use. I miss the Sonata. The pump is a nice small size. Two stars for fewer parts, compact size, great bag and flanges.

If you are feeling pain (which you should not) then you will most likely need a new flange size. You can also see a lactation consultant which is covered by insurance to help find the issue as well. Some women have not experienced a baby at the breast because some women are going the exclusively pumping route or had a painful latch etc. When baby is latched properly you will get a quick yet gentle suck until milk flows (letdown), then you will notice baby take longer sucks and swallows yet there isn’t pain. This pump seemed to mimic those patterns fine as best as a machine can. Yes it is “noisy” yes the motor “shakes” but no it is not so horrible that it will wake the whole household as many dramatic reviews have said. Any pump makes a sound one way or another, it is a machine. I also feel a lot of people are misinformed on the normal pumping output for breastfeeding mothers. YouTube is bombarded with videos of women who have freezer stashes of excess milk and pumping 2-3 times or more of baby’s daily intake needs and it makes other women think that if you aren’t pumping excess of what baby needs daily that you are not pumping enough therefore their pump must be “broken” and that is just simply not the case. If you are able to pump more than baby needs then that is great and should be appreciated, however you can easily pump 3 ounces combined from a 15 minute pumping session and that is literally all baby needs per feeding. Also normal to have fluctuations in pumping output (more one session less the next, fluctuations with time of day/night etc). Also normal to pump 1 oz on one breast 2 oz on the other etc, that is all normal. You do not need to pump 8 oz each breast and think if you don’t get that amount your pump is broken. Its also important to note its always about “supply and demand” especially so if you are early on in your breastfeeding journey skipping pumping sessions while baby is taking a bottle that can DRASTICALLY take its toll on your supply and many women just do not know that. It’s all about proper education on normal pumping outputs. Baby will always be more efficient at the breast and mothers who do feed baby at the breast don’t even usually pump what exclusively pumping mothers get so there’s that. Of course preference comes in to play for all things in life but for the mother who’s milk supply has been established by a baby at the breast and will continue to establish supply with baby at the breast, and are just needing a few pumping sessions throughout the day while they’re at work etc then this pump seems to do the trick just fine. Considering all that is included with this kit I really feel so far that it was a good investment. From what I’ve heard Medela has good customer service and in their pamphlet included with this set it gives troubleshooting tips for common problems and if after following those tips you still have an issue then contact support. I hope this review had some helpful insight. I hope this pump continues to work for me but I feel if the first pump went well it will hopefully continue to do so.

The WORST breast pump
30 January 2023

I absolutely hate this breast pump. I'm not even a review writer but I hate to imagine a first time mom buying this product and quitting breast feeding or pumping. I'm on my third baby and used modela pump in style with the other two and loved it. this is NOT even close to the same product. at first I was excited about the batter option as I am a photographer and have in the past had to set up plugs to pump on my car. But the batter does NOT make up for all its flaws. First and foremost it won't allow pumping only one breast which alone makes it honestly pointless for me. I am currently preparing for daycare so I breastfeed and then pump the other breast to start a back stock, so I literally will only ever pump one breast at once. I had to buy a modela hand pump to ... MoreI absolutely hate this breast pump. I had to buy a modela hand pump to do it because I can't use this. secondly, the suction is terrible, the first cycle is too short, so it doesn't give time for let down to begin, and then the second cycle feels all wrong, too strong and painful. it's a disaster. I don't know what they were thinking but I'm literally going to throw it away because I wouldn't give this to anyone.

The Worst Pump
2 June 2023

This is the worst pump. Medela used to be known for how amazing their products were and 6 years ago their pump saved my breastfeeding journey with my first son. With my second son it has almost ruined it. I have spoken with several laceration consultants through the hospital where I delivered to figure out how I can pump breast milk to be able to return to work full time in a few weeks because as of right now - if I skip a feed and have very full breasts - the Medela pump will only pump 0.5oz out of BOTH breasts. I was informed it is my pump and that Medela changed the way they make their pumps (which is true). I was told it has almost caused so many nursing mothers to quit because they aren’t able to pump any amount to breast milk for when they aren’t there to feed ... MoreThis is the worst pump. I was told it has almost caused so many nursing mothers to quit because they aren’t able to pump any amount to breast milk for when they aren’t there to feed their baby. Sure enough, I put a Haakaa to my breast and was able to pull off several ounces in less than 15mins. I was told to either find my old Medela pump to use or to use a Spectra instead. This pump’s suction does not mimic a baby at all. It is cheap. It is unreliable. DO NOT BUY.

Updated review

I left a negative review a month or two ago due to this pump not being effective for me. After reaching out to customer service, I would like to change my review."I received this pump through insurance- unfortunately the process took a long time (not medela's fault) and I also purchased a spectra pump out of pocket. I planned on bringing the pump in style to work due to its small size. I've been using it at home to get used to it and it is just not efficient for me. I have been pumping one breast at a time to increase suction and it never empties my breast. On multiple occasions I have pumped with the pump in style, have gotten only a small amount of milk out but still felt really full, then had to pump after with my spectra to empty my breasts. On multiple occasions I have pumped with the pump in style, have gotten only a small amount of milk out but still felt really full, then had to pump after with my spectra to empty my breasts. I really wanted to like this pump- it is small and easy to carry, the parts are super easy to clean and assemble, and it is simple to use- it just was not very effective for me."First, the CSR I spoke with was so kind and super helpful. She made sure she was understanding what my issue was and tried several different things to troubleshoot. After deciding that the pump was possibly defective they sent a new one that came the next day. This new pump works great! The suction is amazing and I get the same output as I do with my spectra. The only thing I would want to change is making a clear flange set up. I pump until a few minutes after I stop spraying. With the current set up, I can't see at all- it is difficult to see in the bottle too until you are disconnected. There have been some studies that show that not being able to see can help production though so maybe it is beneficial. I personally just don't like timed pumping as sometimes I am empty in 10 minutes and others 25 depending on time of day.
