Comfort and grip over durability for hiking.

I got these boots at the REI in Chicago while waiting for a train to Glacier National Park. After spending a week there hiking in my new boots I found that some of the rubber pieces fell off the bottom. Well, that was 5 years and hundreds of miles of hiking ago. Many people are saying their shoes are breaking, ok, its true, the soles on mine are just about completely worn down to the foam. I honestly wore these way too much. I wore them on walks, for work, and for 99% of outdoor hikes. They worked for me and got me around safely. I am a heavy guy in the 270-280 range so you can imagine these boots are being worn down every time I put them on. Oddly the upper part of the boot is in great shape, if the soles were stronger I'd be wearing these for many more years. One thing I thought of though is that the softer rubber probably grips better on the rocks. If you go to an REI to shop instead of online they may tell you how this shoe is a flexible shoe its not really a hardcore hiking boot. The other kind of shoes have thicker and harder rubber but they feel like work boots. I like a shoe that can feel the ground more, that's just how I like to hike. I will admit that after 10 hours in these shoes my feet feel like they've been battered. Lighter weight people might have better results with these shoes. Or, maybe throw a thicker insole in them.

Comfortable boots, not as durable as I had hoped

I've worn these for about 150 miles over 2 months and am disappointed on two levels. First is the fit. I went with Keens after years of wearing other brands because these kept coming up in the "most comfortable" lists I was seeing as I shopped for a new pair. Undoubtedly the very wide fit, which is characteristic of all Keens, must be comfortable for some. The issue for me, though, is the instability of the shoe. I tend to overpronate with my right foot, and after 100 miles my right foot has pushed so far inward that I'm getting blisters. These boots really seem to have little to no stability, so if you're looking for a firm ride I'd say be careful with these. The other problem is the claim of waterproofing. The outer materials of the boots themselves are waterproof, but the materials around the tongue and midfoot are definitely not waterproof. So if you're in any water that comes up around the top of the shoe, even a bit, you're going to have wet feet. Other boots with waterproofing (e.g., a GoreTex outer) in my experience have not featured this kind of leaking. So, all in all, I'm disappointed and will be replacing these with another brand after only about 2 months of wear.

Expensive but doesn't deliver
27 January 2023

So I bought these shoes based on many excellent reviews but they were a very big disappointment. My girlfriend also have some keen shoes and they are excellent. I use my shoes for long mountain hiking and I definitely need some very comfortable ones to fit my hiking habits. When they arrived I was quite excited and I started to wear them first just for city walks to see how they fit. They fit perfectly, they look awesome but, and that is one big but...the upper ridge of the boots is too rigid and after a soft hiking in the mountains they hurt me around the ankle. I don't want to imagine how would that work if I was in a camp for few days.I sent them back for refund but they said there are to worn and they can't refund me so now I am stuck with some very expensive ... MoreSo I bought these shoes based on many excellent reviews but they were a very big disappointment. Good value boot.

Just ordered my second pair. I have a hard to fit 10-4E foot. The 10-W was wide enough to provide for a snug but comfortable fit and the heel is captured well with no slippage going up hills. The foot bed has enough cushioning for comfort, but not so much that you cannot feel the terrain. Responsive. Great for hiking and outdoor activities, but would not recommend for standing in one spot for any length of time. I use for USPSA activities. Great for running the course, but my feet are done by the end of a long match. I also use for biking with over-the-toe clips. I do wish Keen would make a non-water proof or hot weather version in wide. Additionally, the boot is pretty much worn out after 9 months. A little over 200 miles hiking plus other activities. The plasticized canvas type material that runs along the sole cracked and came apart on the inside of the toe-box on both. This material is not as resilient as the leather and cannot be conditioned. If not for this, the boots would still be serviceable. At this price point, I cannot really complain. I can buy 3 pairs for what others cost and these fit. I also bought at a big-box outdoor retailer. They may and been sitting on a shelf for a while.

MEN'S TARGHEE III WATERPROOF MID COLOR: FOREST NIGHT/EVENING PRIMROSE SIZE: 8 - Extremely Narrow
21 December 2022

I am a woman who wears a size 9 regular width. I normally purchase a wone's 9.5 in a hiking booth to allow for the thick wool socks. The men's size 8 is usually more than big enough and normally a little too wide. I tried this booth on and loved the fit not too wide and my big toe was position perfect. Walked around the house and everything seemed fine. Wore the boots all day and had horrible pain on both the right and left outer sides of my foot where the insole of the booth came up and ended. Wore them again the next day and the same thing happened by mid-day. Went to REI and asked for assistance. The representative concluded this particular model of Keen's booth was running a little narrow. We tried on others and a men's 8 was perfect. The representative concluded this particular model of Keen's booth was running a little narrow. We tried on others and a men's 8 was perfect. However, I tried on a men's 8.5 and the pain went away immediately. I purchased the men's booth because dark green is my absolute favorite color and the yellow made them look a little more like a women's booth. Fortunately, I had a need to break these booths in for an upcoming trip to New Orleans and I was under the 30-day return window. I returned the boots. I spoke to Keen's representative who was being a little difficult about honoring the sale price to order a half size larger in the exact same shoe. She basically said take it or leave it if you want the boot. I was really surprised and shared I did not feel like a valued Customer. I really liked the shoe and to my luck when the return label came there was a $10.00 coupon to try again. I asked if I could put that towards the shoe and she put me on hold and came back with another price that was $10.00 less but still more than the original price. I just settled and paid the higher price since I really liked the booth. If REi would have had the booth for the sale price at the moment I would have purchased the Men's Targhee III Waterproof Mid Color: Forest Night/ Evening Primrose from that organization. Mainly because REI has EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. That really counts when something goes wrong. I did not give a harsh rating of 4 stars -because Keen's booth only had one issue- running narrow. I treated the horrible Customer Service separately and I vote and score that with my dollars and cents going forward - 1 Star.

Absolute trash. I've exclusively purchased Keen hiking boots for the last 15 years for myself, my wife, and my family. The quality has tanked in recent years. My last pair wore out after 5 years of heavy hiking in deserts and mountains all over the country from Alaska to Arizona. I purchased a pair of these Targhee III boots with high expectations last winter, and they didn't even make it through a mild summer of casual hiking. The seams are starting to tear and the lace hooks have pulled out of both boots. Quality control & Poor materials

I've been wearing 2 different Keen boots for about 10 years now, the Targhee III for hiking & Detroit's for work. I want too love them but have mixed feelings on them both. Let's start by saying they're both extremely comfortable right out the box, which is the only reason I've purchased 3 Detroits and 2 Targhee III each about 2-3 years apart. However the build quality was horrible on all 5 pairs with the exact same problems. All three pairs of Detroits leaked within 2 weeks, The glue around the soul and tow start to separate very quickly, which is probably why they leak and the lugs started tearing off after 6 months. I've read many keen responses too bad reviews stating they are manufacturing defects. As you can see this is not a defect issue but a cheap standard and poor quality issue. It's pretty inconceivable for five different pairs of boots all bought in a 10 years span having the exact same issues. Sorry to say I believe I've owned my last pair of keens, which is unfortunate because they are one of the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.

Short life/lack of durability
17 January 2023

Purchased a pair of these hoping the wider toe box would be more comfortable for backpacking and hiking. The wide toe box is comfortable for me. However, the first pair I purchased from REI failed after less than 6 months due to the sole delaminating from the shoe. Took them back to REI and was shocked when the REI staff at my local store refused to honor REI's 1-year warranty. However, I did go ahead and contact Keen, who after requesting pictures of the failure, sent me a voucher to replace them, which I promptly did. I figured I had just gotten a defective pair. Unfortunately, after less than 100 miles on the replacement pair, same failure--the sole started delaminating from the boot. Very disappointed in these and will be moving on to another boot. Also, very disappointed in REI for not honoring their 1-year warranty as well. I've been a member for over 20 years and REI has really gone downhill.
