Absolute Garbage Waterproofness

Love these boots except their Waterproof rating is garbage. My feet got soaking wet after a few hikes and to say these are waterproof is offensiveness to my intelligence. I have 15 year old gortex boots that still don't leak, I was just looking for an update. I absolutely would not recommend this product if you need a waterproof boot. Keep your money dry in your wallet, it will get soaked if kept in the boot. As for customer service they are non existence. I was asked to send in photos of my boots which I did and did not receive a reply. Next time I will invest my money with a company that cares.

Best Hiking Boot!

Anyone that has travel Europe extensively knows the roadways and walkways are frequently cobble stone based or other materials that make walking somewhat difficult and hazardous at times. I had about two weeks of everyday wear to break them in prior to my departure so I was a bit concerned that I might experience discomfort from wearing a new boot for the 28 day trip. After weeks of walking tours, trail hiking in some rainy conditions I am pleased to report that they were the most comfortable boots that I have ever owned. Extremely Poor Quality

I bought these at EMS on April 29, 2022. In 5 months, I only did one actual hike, through the NJ Pine Barrens. The rest has been maybe 2 miles a day walking on sidewalks in flat NJ areas. Yesterday, I went to tie them and the shoelace guide popped off. In addition to that, these are not fully waterproof, as far as walking in heavy rain.I've been a huge fan of Merrell Moabs and have been wearing them since the late 1980s. Over the past decades, the quality has gotten worse and worse. These new Vibram soles barely manage a year, but I could handle that.I have never, in all 33 years, had the shoelace guide come off like this. I adore wearing Moabs for the comfort, but this might wind up being my last pair of Merrell hiking boots.

Great backpacking boots for above freezing weather
2 October 2022

After a 12 day backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, i accepted the reality that trying to keep your feet dry with waterproof boots in heavy rain and with several stream crossings was not possible. I switched to the Moab 2 Mid Ventilator and continued to rely on quality Merino wool socks. Yes, my feet will get wet, but the wool socks and my activity keeps my feet warm and these boots actually dry out much faster than any waterproof boot. I still have several pairs of gortex-lined boots, but for multi-day backpacking trips when the weather is above freezing, i really like the Moab 2 Mid Ventilators. They broke in fairly quick and are reasonably comfortable. I don't believe they would support a really heavy pack, but if you can keep you load down to ~40 lbs or ... MoreAfter a 12 day backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, i accepted the reality that trying to keep your feet dry with waterproof boots in heavy rain and with several stream crossings was not possible. Horrible since the Redesign
24 November 2021

I purchased my first pair of Merrell Moab Hiking Shoe with Goretex in 2011. They were by far the best hiking shoe I ever had. I used them for over 300 day hikes and as a daily wear shoe. I felt like I was floating, they were very comfortable and wore well. In 2015, before heading out to Yosemite for a few days, I purchased another pair, the exact same. Again, they were awesome. Hikes all over Yosemite with them, and then continued to use them for another 5 years before they were worn out.Again, in 2020, I called my local outdoor store, and ordered in the exact same shoe. Unfortunately, when I had received them, although the colours and design were exactly the same, even the same laces, the shoe had been completely redesigned. The shape was totally different. Unfortunately, when I had received them, although the colours and design were exactly the same, even the same laces, the shoe had been completely redesigned. The shape was totally different. I wore them, and they were very uncomfortable. The heel was raised now, so my ankle was much higher up and out of the shoe, it felt much less secure. If I tried to tighten the laces to feel more secure, they would dig into the top of my feet making it painful. The arch was moved and no longer fit my foot making it painful to walk. I think they dropped the ball on this new redesign. You had a perfectly fine product that was selling in huge volumes, why did you change it.I will no longer be buying Merrell footwear.I am an outdoor adventure guide and need to have products I can rely on time and time again.Niagara Adventure Club, Ontario, Canada

Long-Time Moab Wearer
10 July 2022

I bought my first pair of Merrell Moab boots probably 15-years ago. I found that the wide toe box in the medium width boot is very comfortable for all day wear. Since then I wear Moabs exclusively and over the last few years have two identical pairs that I alternate days with. That gives one pair a chance to dry out after walking the dog in the field (or after a long day working in the field) while I wear the second pair.I also have a third pair with the waterproof liner. These I buy one-half size larger than my normal size because the liner makes them a little smaller than normal. In addition I get a little room for a heavier sock. These are my winter boots when it is wet or snowy. I walk quite a few miles, so I think I get my money's worth from them.

Noisy, but comfortable

Lifelong wearer of Chameleons and thought I would give these a try. Comfortable out of the box, true to size and look good, but every step I take is accompanied by a noticeable "Thwup" sound coming from the front of the left shoe. The sound seems to come from the fabric at the top of the toe box springing back into shape after being bent when taking a step. I disproved the theory if the sound coming from the insoles by powdering, and then replacing them with a gel insole, but the sound remains. If you bend the shoe by hand, you can hear it from the toe box. My hope is that it will go away after time, but another review I saw said that they still got the sound after a couple of months of wear. It may be okay on the trail, but in a store I announce I am coming to ... MoreLifelong wearer of Chameleons and thought I would give these a try. Somewhat Disappointed

This is my 3rd paid of Merrell mid-hiking boots. I currently have 2 pair of Moab 2 mid boots, waterproof and non-waterproof, and I alternate wearing them depending on the weather and time of year. I purchased the Merrell Moab 3 Mid Gor-Tex for better waterproofing. While the construction of the boot is excellent, I find that the boot length is slightly smaller than the Moab 2. The bigger issue I have found is the comfort of this boot. My other Merrells were comfortable out of the box. I can and do wear them all day with any issues, not so with the Moab 3. I have been breaking them in over the past few weeks and they are still somewhat uncomfortable. The Moab 3 has a firm foot bed and the liner material is hard and uncomfortable which I think is the issue. I've ... MoreThis is my 3rd paid of Merrell mid-hiking boots. I think Merrell boots are an excellent product in general, I am somewhat disappointed with the Moab 3.

Time Will Tell
25 April 2023

First of all, I have always liked the looks of the Merrell Moab. And I have never had a problem with the shoes being comfortable right out of the box. I hike mostly in redwood forests so there is minimal hiking on rocks, thus I never have an issue with the vibram sole. And I hike 4-5 miles three days a week. My biggest concern is how well the waterproofing holds up. Before I got the GTX boot, I had the "Waterproof" version. And as I have seen in other reviews, and my situation is the same, the "waterproofing version" does not last that long. So I'm trying the GTX to see if the waterproofing will last longer. So right now, I have to give "good" ratings on some of the questions until I determine how well the waterproofing holds up.

This is my second pair of waterproof Moabs. First Gore Tex. My first impression was that they were a harder base insert, but the thinking today that prevails is that our feet don’t necessarily need more cushion. Even the Superfeet sole inserts are surprisingly hard. I have not broken them in on the trail yet, but they are so much cooler than my last pair. I had them on all day for two days out of the box, and I could not believe how comfortable they are and my feet breathe so much better and are cooler in temperature. I wore out my last pair often having to reglue the soles and I am hoping these last longer. Next time up the Mt. Elinor trail or the Colonel Bob trail I may revise my opinion but for now excellent.
