Beware this shoe. Do NOT use this on a hike

I bought these boots at full price hoping for an amazing shoe to use for outdoors rain or shine and for a long period of time.I was very excited to get them as I've heard great things about merrells and this would be my first experience. In the store the shoes felt great and made walking feel like a breeze but when it came to standing outside for a few minutes while it lightly snowed, my socks began to feel wet. I couldn't believe it! Even my non waterproof shoes could withstand a centimeter of snow landing on them without getting soaked like that. I felt scammed as there is a little metal plate on the shoes stating they are waterproof.I emailed Merrell about this thinking it may have been a defective pair but never once did I get a reply. It's really a shame ... MoreI bought these boots at full price hoping for an amazing shoe to use for outdoors rain or shine and for a long period of time.I was very excited to get them as I've heard great things about merrells and this would be my first experience. The material was kind of thin, so I would often stub my tow and feel much of what I would step on. I wanted to upgrade to something more rugged, but still lightweight, and not as big as some of the other boots out there. This hiking boot fit the bill. It has so far withstood 8 4000 footer White Mountain hikes in NH, as well as numerous others. It grips rocks like no other; it is lightweight so you can glide on the trail; they are comfortable; they are extremely water resistant (my feet stayed dry through numerous river crossings and rain showers); you don't feel much underneath ... MoreThis is an incredible pair of hiking boots. Love my Moabs
28 July 2024

Best boot for me. Wide Merrell Moabs, both lowand mid hikers, work well for me right out of the box. I have been wearing Moabs since 2007. Since they came out with a wide width for ladies (my foot is too small for men’s sizes), I haven’t looked elsewhere. The only complaint I have is that the shoe laces could be a couple inches longer. I end up buying longer laces just about every time especially for the mid hikers. I’ve taken my boots trekking in Tasmania, in the grass hills of Ireland , along the coast and mountains of Italy, in the high mountains of Colorado, as well as the the Washington Cascades, Glacier and Rocky Mountains National Parks, the AT within the Shenandoah National Park, in the Great Smoky Mountains NP, …. Not waterproof. Not sure if my luck is terrible and I'm getting the flawed pairs, or if it's an issue across a production run, or what.First pair was a holiday gift to me, which started seeping a month after I started wearing them and progressively got worse. Merrell, to their benefit, did replace them. Unfortunately, the replacement pair is already proving unfit for New England mud season. On wear #6, which was the first venture into repetitive sloppy mud, my toes ended up moist. Right foot being worse, which was the starting pattern on pair #1. The toe caps would be submerged in each step for 20-50' at a time, perhaps 8 times, rest of the hike (only 3 miles) was on well drained dirt and grass.MASSIVELY annoying as they are otherwise comfortable (I'd LOVE an ... MoreNot waterproof. As a polio survivor I have split sizes (8.5 and 5, the 5 needing a lift and orthotic work) and so had to buy 2 pairs and take one shoe to an orthotist who could do the work and also put the Vibram sole back on. Once all that expensive work was done I broke them in and soon after took them on a strenuous trip to Peru including Machu Picchu and other such sites plus tons of city walking. They were and are nothing short of fabulous! Worth every penny! P.S. I'm 75 years old and have had lifelong foot and ankle issues and thus my standards for comfort, balance and stability are high. They are heavily padded and provide superb support while stlii being flexible. They are also fully waterproof; even when walking in high grass, wet from morning dew or recent rain. They have excellent Vibram soles which give good traction. I am looking forward to wearing these shoes this winter when the temperatures drop and and when the sidewalks and trails are covered with slush or a few inches of snow. In the past I used serious high hiking boots, which are heavy, rigid and much less comfortable for walking.I recommend Mid Moabs for everyone. Traditional low Moabs are also excellent for walking and trail hiking. Mids offer more support and warmth.

I have worn Moab Mids for something like 15 years, this was my 4th pair. I have loved these boots for their comfort and fit right out of the box, they have never caused blisters or hotspots, they were supportive and rugged but also lightweight, my absolute favorite boot. The design, however, seems to have changed and not for the better. I immediately noticed the new boots had a different shape than my old pair, but didn’t really think much of it. Unfortunately within just the first few steps of my hike I noticed an uncomfortable rubbing on the back of my ankles. After less than a mile a large blister had developed in the back of my right ankle and a smaller one was forming on the left. There is a very stiff, thick seam running on the inside of the ankle about 2 cm from the top of the boot which is what is causing the issue. I was able to finish my hike after applying bandaids and moleskin and I was hoping the seam would soften but it really hasn’t done so and it started rubbing on my ankle bones as well. It took me years to find boots that didn’t cause issues and now I’m going to have to go back to square one to find new boots, which is very frustrating, especially after the amount I spent on this new pair.

Waterproof Failure
14 April 2024

I purchased the MOAB 3 Gore Tex boot after considerable research. By all accounts this is the ultimate boot, breathable and waterproof. I wear this boot in an urban environment so it is not subjected to rough or compromising situations. I have only been wearing this boot occasionally for about 8 weeks. Today, during a rain storm, the "right" boot experienced a failure of epic proportions. The toe area became a sodden saturated sponge, it was if there was no waterproof membrane at all. Needless to say I am deeply disappointed in the MOAB 3 Gore tex, a premium price for poor performance. Don't waste your money.

Zero break-in needed

Same Moab comfort right out of the box. I got these in the mail and immediately work them 6 days in a row on 10-12 hour bushwacks in tough terrain and had no blisters or hot spots. I've got about 20 such days on them at this point and am really pleased.I tend to gravitate to low cut hikers, but with snow or slush on the ground that only works for so long, so I supplemented these Mids with gaiters to get through moderate snow depth, and they worked well. I have only used these into the low 20's F and found that they are warm. In my opinion the waterproof membrane tends to be tilted a little more toward waterproof than breathable- which is what I would prefer for my use. I have not noticed a breach in the membrane yet. Outsole seems fine for a non stealth rubber tread.
