I’ve hiked regularly with these boots and am very pleased with them. First of all, they were the best fit for my wide, flat feet. And I love the fact that they don’t have pink or purple on them - why do manufacturers think all women want to wear girly colors, all the time? They have decent, moderate ankle support, and don’t bruise my ankles at the top of the boot! The laces don’t loosen up as I walk if I cross them only one extra time, just below the top, so they hold my feet in place securely without squeezing them too hard. They protect my feet from rocks and roots nicely. They grip the terrain well, though I haven’t been far enough from home to get above tree-line yet. If you have worn and love the older version Moab boots, you will love the Moab 3 even more. The toe box is a little more generous so I ended up needing a half size smaller than my old Moabs. These boots are comfortable right out of the box. I do replace the insoles with Sidas brand insoles that provide better arch support. These boots are not "waterproof", I'd describe them as water resistant. If you hike in light rain you'll probably be okay, a little splashing on a water crossing also probably okay, but anything more than that and you're socks will get wet. Overall though, I'll be wearing these boots for as long as Merrell makes them.

So I just got back from an extending trekking/climbing trip to Nepal. In general I would say that the boot performed well. It is definitely waterproof but perhaps therein lies the "but". We were typically moving for about 6 hours a day and at the end of each day my socks would be soaked and my toes looked like raisins. As a disclaimer, I typically sweat more than the average person so take my comments with that in mind. As we gained altitude the issues diminished but I would say that this could cause some serious trench foot for extended hikes. Great traction and protection but the waterproofing seems to come at a price. I will definitely keep these boots but will only use them as my second option when the weather turns wet. I wore these shoes out of the house for the first time on hikes in mid-May in Broken Bow, OK. It got hot hiking, but my feet were fine! These shoes lived up to their claim of not needing to be broken in! Though I'm not used to shoes that come up my ankle, these never hurt me and were comfortable through several miles of hikes. I did leave the very top eyes unlaced, but will tie them next time. It's great to have that option. We didn't hike through water so I can't comment on the waterproof part. I'm very glad to have comfortable, supportive hiking boots that I can wear in warm weather! I did wear good wool socks with them.
About 10 years ago, I was at the REI store in Seattle shopping for a new pair of light hikers. I found the perfect pair; they fit my feet perfectly, had all the features I was seeking, and the price was right. Then, I overheard a woman sitting near me talking about a pair of boots she'd loved so much she wore them out. She was at REI that day to purchase a new pair of the exact same boot. I decided I had to try the Merrells she was talking about. Amazed that the fit and feel of the boots was superior than the "perfect ones" I'd already found, I bought them and since that time have purchased additional pairs. I wear them in the garden, for local walks, on the trail. I keep a pair in my car and almost always travel with a pair.

Looking for a wide shoe (previously wearing Altras but the new version is just not wide enough). My shoe size is 5.5 and I had to size up to 6.5 to get the width. This in itself isn't abnormal, but was looking for a wider shoe with stability. I ended up feeling that these didn't have as much ankle support as I thought, especially being that they are higher top. They are also extremely heavy (much heavier than I anticipated) and I could feel it throughout the entire hike. Ended up doing one hike in the Gunks of about 7 miles and I had pretty bad neuropathy throughout the hike (even though they felt good at first as soon I started climbing I felt the neuropathy was worse on uphill rather than downhill). Just also did not feel as stable as anticipated in the ankle.

Unfortunately within just the first few steps of my hike I noticed an uncomfortable rubbing on the back of my ankles. After less than a mile a large blister had developed in the back of my right ankle and a smaller one was forming on the left.
