Metolius Magnum Crash Pad Black / Grey

The Magnum is a massive crashpad 4' x 6' (1.2 m x 1.8 m), in an easy-carrying, tri-fold design. Sandwich foam design stands for maximum impact absorption: 1" (25 mm) closed-cell, top layer, 2.5" (60 mm) open-cell center, and ½" (15 mm) closed-cell, base layer. The body is covered with 900d fabric for maximum durability and the cross-clipper logo rug for cleaning shoes is centered in the middle of the crashpad. Angle cut hinges eliminate the gutter found in other designs, and a small external stash pocket and larger inner pocket provide a place to store shoes, chalk bag, etc. The closure flap reverses are to cover shoulder straps while bouldering. Plush padded shoulder straps and dual sets of drag handles give you lots of carrying options. Aluminum buckles are guaranteed for life. The Magnum also makes an awesome crag bed for car camping!

Been bouldering 9 years and this is the best pad.

I bought this pad about 6 months ago. It has served amazingly and it is intelligently designed. It is big enough to be the only pad you bring to the crag (unless you're projecting some highballs...) I am a bouldering instructor and have seen many crash pad designs. This one has a waist belt like hiking packs for easy access to wherever you're going. The foam is of the highest quality I have seen and manages to be 1" thinner than Madrock's trifold (the closest in size competitor). Would recommend this pad to beginners and pros.More bang for the buck than Organic. Could not recommend more....It even has a phone storage spot in it. Pro tip: it is easy to store things on top of the pad under the closure, while you are walking with it and your items stay tight and in ... MoreI bought this pad about 6 months ago. Got this crashpad last year.Pros:- Massive surface coverage- Nice patch in the middle for cleaning up your shoes before a climb- Robust and comfortableConst:- Lacks thickness so some falls might feel a bit roughOverall I really like this crash pad, I think it is a good alternative to buying two crashpads for the bigger coverage during your bouldering sessions.

Easy to carry, good size for the price

I hiked this crash pad in for ~2 miles - it's light and not too cumbersome. Worked well - feels thick and durable for a fall. Only downside was that the velcro in the crease came apart pretty easily

Excellent Size for Solo Boulerding
23 July 2020

I bought this for solo outdoor bouldering and it works perfectly. I've had to place it over sharp rocks on the ground and can't even feel them when falling onto it and the material is so durable it hasn't ripped or scraped. Also, the price is totally worth it when it comes to protecting yourself in the best way possible. One final thought is that the weight is nicely distributed so wearing like a backpack is fairly comfortable for those longer treks.

Large versatile pad
17 July 2020

I have bought two of these pads and I can't say enough good things about them. The tri-fold design makes them so versatile and easy to transport. The tri-fold lets you stack the pads in various ways to make a flat landing pad. One time we put the folded pad between two tall rocks and then an unfolded pad accross them. The pads also easily fit into the back seat of a sedan.

I didn't feel a need to review this pad until I bought some cheaper pads for my garage climbing wall and saw how high quality this metolius is comparably. It is worth the price for the size. Very useful size I don't see the point in these 36x48 pads that you need 2 of.This pad is very firm and I like that. I could knock the wind out of me if I fall flat on my back from a roof but that is not a typical fall for me.This pad is not a great bed because it is too firm but it is a good couch.the angled hinges, good fabric, tight fitting cover and firm foam put the madrock pads I bought to shame. It is fine because the madrock pads were 25 percent off and were significantly cheaper, and I needed 4 of them for my garage. This pad is miles ahead in quality. Don't be afraid of the size bigger is better. do cost per square foot analysis it is not that much more expensive than some cheaper options.

Perfect Pad
17 January 2022

It's the best and a favorite at the crag. Covers a large area but folds up compactly. High quality foam, handy straps, angled edges that overlap and velcro together. I'm 5' 3" and have no issues carrying this. Very happy with this purchase.

Perfect if you only want to buy one

Go big. Unless you only climb with friends who also bring pads, you’ll really appreciate the extra protection this provides. Easy to walk with, rugged and lays out nicely on uneven ground. Done.

Very cool crash pad! I crashed (slept) on it Christmas Eve because we had family staying with us and I had to give up my bed. Okay, maybe I wanted to sleep on it to test this feature too and it was firm, but pretty comfy for a 6 foot 4 inch human. Christmas day, I got to test it actually crashing from climbing on a home built climbing wall. I really love it. Thanks MJ! Super easy to carry with the back pack straps.

took this pad out for its first trip to rumbling bald in North Carolina. no complaints . light weight, lots of coverage, simple closure (only one buckle!), and lots of room for your gear. 10/10
