oh dear... the cover says it all; but I was looking for a novel by a Mexican, and this came up...more lovecraft than Brontes

I bought 3 books from World of Books (as Christmas presents!)All were in great condition, good prices, well packaged and arrived very quickly. I would recommend and would order again.

A fun romp in gothic Mexico

What a book! Noemi is a new favourite character, for sure (even though i could have used some more character development for other characters - esp. Catalina). As for the horror element... well. While I understand criticisms re: the lack of overt horror, I personally feel that there is nothing more frightening than colonialism.I was moderately disappointed by the ending, though this disappointment not enough to quell my love for the atmosphere, the writing style, the subtle subversion of western mesoamerican horror tropes, and the chill that travels down the spine as the decrepit white hand of european imperialism steals and violates.

Amazing!

The plot twists are amazing. It's not too slow or too fast for me to understand. It's a great length book. It's written very well the storyline makes sense. It's a stunning book.

Gothic Fantasy

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.It was not what I was expecting, but again it was a book I picked due to the exquisite cover! Heralded as a haunting gothic fantasy, I was expecting something different to what I discovered. The book, whilst setting up a spooky atmosphere and gothic vibe, took a long time to pull me in and then I still couldn't quite engage with the characters. The romantic relationship fell flat, and the bad guys, so obviously bad and one dimensional. All the characters felt very contrived. The final 50 pages tried to wrap it up but it moves from a suspense mystery story into a strange horror that didn't quite work for me. The best book I've read in a long time.

The author creates suspense, drama and amazing characters. I could not put it down.
