Price - Its very expensive; and shouldn't be.2. Its not upgradable, in any way. Buy what you can afford, as its all its ever going to be when you take it out of the box.3. An 8GB machine is great for productivity; but despite the discrete graphics processor, its not going to be a decent gaming machine. Don't fool yourself or try to talk yourself into thinking it will be. It won't...4. I have no idea who thought that small SSD's would be ok on any kind of machine. 256GB is fine for a productivity machine; but even then, depending on what you're trying to do, you will likely find you want additional storage. You WILL need an SSD card, and then you WILL need something called a HyperDrive to permanently store a microSSD card in the machine without the card sticking out of the side of the keyboard.5. The detach mechanism is a bit wonky, and I have never liked the way the device turns the screen around. Taking it physically OFF the base to reattach it is connects nearly everything, including the SSD storage where you will likely have your local OneDrive cache sitting, leaving apps and Windows itself to try to figure everything out when the device is reattached. If you can get your workflow down and minimize the number of times you need or want to flip the screen around, you're going to find that the Surface Book beats the Surface Pro in portability, largely due to the keyboard. Its much sturdier and more solid, and provides a better overall typing and trackpad experience than the Surface Pro. You will pay a premium for this, but if you're more into productivity and getting work done, the Surface Book will be a better buy for you in the long run.

The VMware installer popup informed me that it could install on my old HP laptop but that virtual machines may not actually run with its ancient Intel processor. So the specs for this Microsoft Surface Book 2 appealed, with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD (I would have preferred the 1GB) version. That being said, whilst the base and tablet were bent the system still functions completely normally. It fits my purpose as a docked laptop and as such is a testament to the durability and usability of the Microsoft Surface Book 2. This despite its "bent" and likely unwarrantable condition. The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is quiet, fast and works great with a Microsoft Surface Dock and an external Lenovo monitor connected via the Surface dock and an Apple mini display port to DVI cable. It is being used with a 102W Microsoft Surface power supply. This Surface Book 2 will also work undocked and in tablet only mode too (without the base). I also have the latest Microsoft Surface pen to use with it, just in case. As stated, my primary use, is for the Microsoft Surface Book 2 to be a docked desktop laptop, which it is doing perfectly. As great as it is as a docked desktop, this system would also be ideal as a power users mobile Windows 10 laptop and competes as well or better than similar offerings in the market. One caveat for the Microsoft Surface Book 2 and its Surface Book predecessor, is that the SSD storage and system memory (RAM) are fixed model specific configurations and unfortunately not designed to be upgradable. Apart from that there's no real reason for me to not like the Microsoft Surface Book 2, except for the normally high price or unless you like the features, functions or price of another laptop better.

However, working with two or more Adobe programs at the same time, while also running Chrome with multiple tabs open, and even more apps for playing music and chatting, was simply too much workload. So I got this version instead, and it’s not just the perfect match for MY workload, but also gives you the best bang for your buck! The dedicated GTX 1050 GPU isn’t just way more powerful than the integrated one, but also comes with its own 2GB of video memory. This means, that the CPU doesn’t have to share the 8GB system memory, which is important if you plan on running multiple memory demanding programs at the same time. If this still isn’t powerful enough for you, instead of going for the 16GB version of this model, I’d suggest getting the 15” model instead. Not only does it come with the additional system memory, but also with an even more powerful GPU.Either way, you will get a well-built device. The keyboard feels good and has enough travel, and the trackpad is smooth and accurate. I would even go so far and say that both are good enough to write a 50+ pages thesis without feeling the need for an external keyboard and mouse. The speakers are also good, and deliver clear sound, but unfortunately they’re not the loudest. Depending on your needs, you might want to consider getting an external Bluetooth speaker. Last but not least the screen: With its aspect ratio of 3:2 at a resolution of 3000x2000 pixels, its high color accuracy and a peak brightness of 410 nits, this is simply one of the best screens out there. You will love it!Now I know this device is very expensive, and if you don’t use the 2-in-1 feature, you will definitely get more for your money with other laptops, such as the new Razer Blade 15. However, if you are a creative or you simply enjoy being able to de-attach the screen, and even if it’s just to read articles in vertical mode from the comfort of your couch, I say: Go for it.The Surface Book 2 is a great device, and probably the best 2-in-1.

Pros: It's good looking, I like the way the detachable screen is a tablet in its own right and erm… that's about it!Cons: What have they done? This is awful! To qualify my comments, I'm coming to this from a Lenovo Yoga i7, 8gb ram, 256gb SSD, which my wife - lucky girl - has inherited. It has been a superb machine, with zero problems for two and a half years. However, we needed another good quality laptop for home and business and with £450 off, this seemed to be a stunning deal. I did my homework, compared the respective processors and went ahead with this purchase.Little did I know! After 20+ years of drag and drop with PCs and laptops, suddenly it can't be done. Instead, endless copying and pasting. But, guess what? I can't just double tap and highlight the text I want to copy, instead, I have to shift and use the super slow keyboard - or highlight whole paragraphs at a time.Nor can I simply click on the right hand side cursor(?) and scroll down. Instead, it's this counter-intuitive two fingered action on the touchpad - and it goes the wrong way!!It is dire! The backlit keyboard. A disaster! In normal daylight with the machine - surprise, surprise - on my lap, it's impossible to see the characters. And, it's already started to hang. Totally unresponsive just browsing on YouTube! After all the hype this is the biggest disappointment of my tech buying life.Dreadful!PS I don't pretend to be a tech wizard - but I shouldn't need to be, so anybody who can offer any fixes for these issues, I will always listen - or read!

Been at uni for 2 years before committing to this laptop and I'm so glad that I have. The surface book is extremely useful and has a real USP that almost every other product lacks; the ability to detach the screen while still having a solid keyboard.I use this laptop for taking notes in class, running simulations, programming, writing reports and general computer stuff. It's not let me down in any way at all, it's able to power through even the toughest of programmes with ease. It's not let me down in any way at all, it's able to power through even the toughest of programmes with ease. The windows OS and hardware being built by Microsoft means that the hardware and software are optimised for each other. The laptops usability as a touchscreen note pad is also great, the pen has a easy magnetic holder on the side of the laptop and it works really well. Writing is extremely easy and the use of the end of the pen as a rubber makes it feel a lot like a pencil which is great. If there's one small thing that annoys me, it's that at a very small scale, Theres jitter... when you are taking small notes with the finest pen you may notice slight jitter. This has been addressed through software updates but is not perfect and i use a thicker pen when writing to combat this. The laptop itself is great, it has many features that other manufacturers overlook. The screen is of an extremely high quality both in colour and pixel density giving for high quality images. The laptop can open with face regocnition which is extremely easy. The laptop opens without having to hold the base down. The feel of the magnesium body is great and much nicer to touch (especially on cold days) compared to metal. All in all this laptop is an amazing invest and one that I would say is worth every penny. It has never failed me and makes my life so much easier!!

It does everything, and that's the problem.

If you're like me, here is the TL:DR in case you're like me and want to get to the meat and potatoes first:No kickstand, moderately okay graphics card, digitizer technology that comes second only to Wacom, the fact that the silver on white keyboard backlighting is for some reason unsurprisingly hard to see in well lit areas, and the fact the Surface Book is essentually just a beefier Surface Pro, I sometimes question why I even considered it in the first place. No I do not recommend the book line of products to pretty much anyone. You can find more value from other members of the surface family, and if you really need the horsepower, other systems like the Dell XPS 15 are boasting higher specs at a fraction of the cost.If you're a graphics illustrator like me, ... MoreIf you're like me, here is the TL:DR in case you're like me and want to get to the meat and potatoes first:No kickstand, moderately okay graphics card, digitizer technology that comes second only to Wacom, the fact that the silver on white keyboard backlighting is for some reason unsurprisingly hard to see in well lit areas, and the fact the Surface Book is essentually just a beefier Surface Pro, I sometimes question why I even considered it in the first place. No I do not recommend the book line of products to pretty much anyone. You can find more value from other members of the surface family, and if you really need the horsepower, other systems like the Dell XPS 15 are boasting higher specs at a fraction of the cost.If you're a graphics illustrator like me, this device is an absolute disappointment. I've only had the device for less than a month and I have almost no incentives to stop using my dying Surface Pro 4 with a broken kickstand and dead pixel count that outnumber the boxes of cinnamon toast crunch my kids rip through in a standard month.Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the surface line of products and truly wish that microsoft afforded more money to the R&D team responsible for the Ntrig pen technology. I refuse to support the digitizer monopoly held by Wacom and ended up trading in my 27UHD Cintiq for my first surface pro 4. Bold claim, but I actually like my Surface Pro 4 better than any Wacom Bamboo, Intuos, or Cintiq product I have ever owned. I've even tried those oddball Huion tablets and they don't even begin to compare. So why then would I choose to go with the (still) heavily priced surface book 2?Simply, the prospect of a graphics card.Besides the fact that the windows 1903 update rendered it useless for a few weeks, I am genuinely not impressed by the performance. I understand I wasn't buying a full scale GTX chip, but I still find my surface gets bogged down quite easily when very little is actually using the GPU's processing power. I want to believe this is because in all my wisdom I bought a year+ old device, but I'm not over here trying to stream the newest call of duty running 4k @ 2048 FPS on my twitch stream. Even with gigabit ethernet running through the USBC (also tested with A), letting the Nvidia GPU perform all the video encoding, I still get lockups and sometimes crashes when trying to livestream Clip Studio Paint or Photoshop.Even when the graphics card isn't having a panic attack, I find the experience I bought the device for simply lackluster as compared to other members of the surface family or competitor systems. In fact, whoever thought that not including a kickstand and instead force my neck to rely on this wobbly keyboard hinge needs to have their product design credentials revoked. I had to end up cutting down a piece of styrofoam to prevent my screen from moving when trying to do fine ink work. Sure I could flip the screen around and have it rest in "studio mode", but I prefer my neck not sounding like a bag of agitated pop-rocks when I need to design a conceptual piece for a client 6-10 hours a day. There are solutions around this, but the fact all the surface pro devices have a built in kickstand, there isn't a good enough reason in my eyes they couldn't offer the redundancy, or, release a performance base that works with the surface pros should you need the a graphics card attachment for whatever reason. In my experience, the surface book is made for no one in particular and thereby fails to impress anyone. I have seen plenty of favorable reviews when using this device as a pretty rudimentary platform, but as soon as you get into more niche audiences, the jack of all trades façade really starts to show its cracks. It is for all these reasons that I cannot justify a score higher than 2/5. It's fair -- just..... fair.

Its 2023, mine is still kicking
11 February 2023

Bought this 2019. I got a lemon, so luckily Microsoft store gave me a brand new one since the one in the package had a very faulty processor. It's 2023 and I'm still using it. Great performance, nice display. Very easy to remove the screen and make it tablet mode. Responsive screen with the pen. Overall a good laptop. Emphasis on 'good'. The one thing it is absolutely horrible and it's the major desing flaw is its wifi. As soon as you close it to place it in the dock and turn it into a 'PC', any connection with the internet is nulled. You ABSOLUTELY NEED a wifi antenna to make the wifi work. And not just any mini wifi boster. No, you need to drop the money to get one of the big ones to get ANY FLIPPING internet connection. As a laptop/tablet, there're no issues. Once in dock mode, 100% useless internet. If you do NOT intend to use this with a docking system you are good. If you WANT to use is with the docking - look for another laptop.Since time has gone by, I don't believe this comment will do anything since the new laptops are more powerful and I bet/hope the wifi device is set in a less than convenient placement inside the laptop. But if you need to buy an older model to save some money or one that will take a bit of a beating, this one is up your alley. Again...not for docking. Definitely 100% not for docking. Good for everything else when in laptop/tablet mode.

Not for photo editing
5 October 2022

Not for photo editing. I bought this for photography and photo editing. I primarily use Photoshop and Lightroom classic. Terrible, terrible lagging. The pen strokes do not keep up and it takes much longer than it should to open anything. I've updated the driver's, downloaded extras. The specs are well above the minimums required but it still will not run the programs. This was a lot of money wasted. On a side note....the battery life when running these programs is about 30 mins.

Hello Friends,My entire life I always used and preferred to use the windows os. I owned surface book 2 before 1.5 years ago, but out of nowhere it didn't worked. I never did anything to it nor dropped it. The very other morning while I was trying to open up, the screen was black and indeed the system was not starting. Sadly, It was out of warranty and I never purchased a geek squad protection. I spended $1600 for surface book 2 and it was not worth it. I seriously loved it and also recommend it to everyone but please be aware that if you are investing something around $1200 to above for laptop; it shouldn't have problem for 3-5 years without any interrogations. Please keep in mind before you buy the surface. Still I love it and don't believe why it happened out of ... MoreHello Friends,My entire life I always used and preferred to use the windows os. Thank you :(

Versatile device!
28 September 2019

I was in the search for a 2-in-1 laptop. I owned an HP laptop for more than 7 years, so I needed to upgrade. After researching and looking through many different brands / models, I chose the surface book based on previous reviews I read and because I am familiar using Microsoft products.I will start off with the negatives before getting into the positives.-My first complain is that at this price point, you still have to buy separate attachments if you want to do more with this product. Many laptops come with the pen, but you have to buy one separately for this one, which is like $100. I also had to buy a USB-c to hdmi adapter in order to connect my laptop to my projector.-Speaking of USB-c, I wish you were be able to charge this laptop using an android charger, ... MoreI was in the search for a 2-in-1 laptop. Many laptops come with the pen, but you have to buy one separately for this one, which is like $100. I also had to buy a USB-c to hdmi adapter in order to connect my laptop to my projector.-Speaking of USB-c, I wish you were be able to charge this laptop using an android charger, given that it fits in that port. That way I wouldn't have to carry the bulky laptop charger around with me. Even if it didn't charge as fast as the laptop charger, it would still be nice to get some charge on the go in case of an emergency.-Given that I have an Xbox, I am familiar with the Microsoft store, so I knew what to expect in terms of the apps it has and doesn't have. However, it still bothers me that many apps are not included in the Microsoft Store compared to Google Play and the App Store. The apps that are available sometimes don't work either. It's not a huge deal breaker though because I can just use apps on my phone or the internet on the laptop.Overall, it seems like Microsoft expected you to spend money beyond just buying the laptop itself. From a business perspective, I understand what they're trying to do, and I know most companies do the same. From a consumer's perspective, I don't like it.The positives definitely outweigh the negatives.-First, this laptop turns on very fast, within seconds, which is good because we expect technology to be quick nowadays. This would be a great laptop for those people that are impatient because everything runs quickly and smoothly. I have many windows open with many tabs, and I can still search for something or watch videos with no lag whatsoever.-Perhaps my most favorite thing about this laptop is that it is so versatile! You can pretty much move the screen all around (360 degrees). You can turn the typical 180 degrees, like any ordinary laptop. You can also detach the screen, flip it over and attach it again, and turn it however you want. You can detach the screen and use it as a tablet.-Speaking of tablet, this laptop has two batteries, which is not heard of often. Apart from the usual battery that a laptop has on the base, the screen itself (when you detach and use in tablet mode), has its own battery. This is awesome because your laptop actually lasts a long time before the next charge. I love not having to constantly charge it, or worry about having to charge it when I'm out of the house.-It is also awesome when you detach the screen to use it as a tablet because all you do is press a button and it automatically clicks for you to be ready to detach the screen. I don't have to worry about the screen accidentally falling/breaking off from the keyboard, unlike other laptops I have seen. The hinges that connect the screen to the keyboard seem very durable and unique, which I like.-An extra bonus is that you can actually play Xbox games on this if you own an Xbox. So that is a great option to have if you're on the road and don't want to bring your bulky Xbox with you.-The screen resolution is awesome and it feels really smooth typing on the keyboard.-Although I haven't extensively used it or stored much, it has a lot of power. You can casually use it for streaming and general searching, you can game on it using apps or Xbox games, and you can even create using large programs such as photoshop and other music programs.-It has a front and a rear camera, which is awesome because not all laptops have that feature. It is especially useful if you're using apps that require a rear camera or if you just want to take pictures - adding to the versatility of this device.Overall, this is an awesome laptop / tablet. There are some little things that bothered me a bit, but the laptop is 5-star worthy. There are many more positives that I can put on here, but this review is already starting to look like a book. I have yet to explore the full potential of the laptop, and that is what excites me about it because it is already a cool device.
