Drawing with the pen was easy enough (even with me being left-handed) once I got acclimated to how it felt in my hand, and how it glided across the surface of the Surface Pro tablet's screen. There is a recessed slot to keep the pen so it's right there handy, and charged.Bottom line - This keyboard does what it needs to, both with optimal responsiveness, while also protecting the screen of the tablet. It is slim in design, highly portable, and a perfect compliment to the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet.

This keyboard is a good match for the Surface Pro. It provides all the features and functionality you get in a typical laptop keyboard including back lit keys! The touch pad size is typical for a laptop this size and is responsive to the touch. When closed the keyboard magnetically attaches to the Surface Pro so it looks and feels like a very thin laptop. The electrical connection is via connectors on one of the fingers in the base and the keyboard must be attached to the Surface Pro for it to work. The keyboard is stiff enough to type on and the keys provide good feedback when pressed so you can type with confidence. There are three levels of brightness for the key caps which is very helpful in low light conditions. There is some flex in the material between the base and the Surface so it can wobble when not placed on a solid surface. I also noticed some flex when using the touchpad buttons when the keyboard was not on a solid surface. The base has a storage area that charges the Slim Pen when not in use. For me this is a great advantage because in the past whenever I needed my pen it was always low on battery life. Also the storage area becomes hidden when the keyboard is raised into the typing position. I am still getting used to the flat pen but one advantage is that it has a magnet so you can set it down on the palm rest and it sticks. The Slim Pen 2 has two buttons that allow you to perform various task in some applications. There is also an led that lets you know when the pen is low on battery.

The Microsoft Surface Pro Keyboard is comfortable to type on and magnetically stores and charges the Slim Pen when not in use. It is thin and can feel a little flimsy when typing on it (especially if you're using it on your lap). I find myself worried that I may apply too much pressure and cause the top to "unfold" down (where the pen is stored) or maybe bend the keyboard. So, if you're typing a long document or doing a lot of coding, you may want to fold the keyboard completely out so it is flush against your desk's surface. Despite that, the keys seem to be spaced normally and it did not feel like a huge adjustment moving from a full-sized keyboard to this. Both the laptop and keyboard fold together nicely to protect the screen and they make the unit very portable to carry or slip into a backpack. The addition of the Copilot key is nice, but I don't find pressing it often even though I'm a frequent Copilot user (I'm simply used to clicking the Copilot icon on the task bar). I really like the dedicated mute key located on F1 as it makes it simple to find during a meeting (so I'm not scrambling to find the icon on screen). The keyboard also has an adjustable backlight for late night typing. The keys can feel a little "mushy" to type on as this is not a mechanical keyboard with clicky keys. The Slim Pen flat and may initially feel a little odd to feel, but I adjusted to it fairly quickly. I really appreciate the tactile feedback (which can be adjusted in the pen settings) so it makes writing on glass feel a little more natural without needing a paper-like screen protector. The top of the pen can be used as an eraser in supported programs, and its click can be configured to open OneNote or another application.Overall, this keyboard provides decent protection to the display while providing a full-sized keyboard, trackpad and storage (with charging) for the pen.

I recently acquired the Surface Pro – Copilot+ PC along with the Surface Slim Pen and Pro Keyboard. . The Dune-colored keyboard is a nice departure from the usual black and gray standards I've always had. It effortlessly attaches and detaches from the tablet thanks to its magnetic connector, offering flexible positioning—either at a tilted angle for comfortable typing or laid flat to reveal the neatly stored Slim Pen in its storage/charging tray (see attached pictures). The Alcantara material covering the keyboard, reminiscent of high-quality felt, not only feels soft but also provides stability and eliminates slippage on any surface I’ve tried it on. The Alcantara material covering the keyboard, reminiscent of high-quality felt, not only feels soft but also provides stability and eliminates slippage on any surface I’ve tried it on. A backlit keyboard is a must-have for me, so I appreciate that this one comes with adjustable brightness levels, enhancing usability across different environments.Having been a laptop/mouse user forever, using the Slim Pen for the first time has been quite eye-opening. After a few days of using the keyboard and pen, I've found the experience refreshingly positive in general day-to-day computer usage. I have also edited several videos just using the keyboard/pen vs. a mouse and have found that some functions are quicker using the pen, but trimming/editing clips is more difficult to me, maybe I’m doing something wrong or just need more practice. In my case I think a mouse is still necessary, at least at this point, while I continue to learn using the pen.The track pad is very responsive as are the keys on the keyboard, they have a nice feel and click to both. The Slim Pen stays securely in place within the magnetic storage tray and charges while it's stored. However, I've noticed that it can be challenging to remove from the tray at times. While the magnetic hold is strong and secure, it can be tricky to extract the pen. Adding a finger-sized indentation or something like that to aid in removing it would be beneficial. Currently, I find myself kind of prying it up by the front tip to release it from the tray, hope this doesn’t hurt it in the long run. Overall, I really like this keyboard/pen, just think it could be a little easier to remove it from the storage tray.
The ability to keep the keyboard connected to the Surface Pro is both an advantage and a disadvantage to me. The keyboard doesn’t need to be charged, but that also means it needs to be attached at all times if typing is required. As a result, this form factor can feel restrictive in terms of where it can be set up such as on tables that aren’t too narrow or on certain sitting positions.KEYS:They have a nice tactile, responsive feel overall - although presses can feel a little stiff - sometimes I found myself typing louder and with more force as a result. Also when typing with the Slim Pen 2 tray folded and the keyboard is raised, typing feels a little hollow. However, I personally missed having some dedicated media play/pause buttons, and I found the up/down arrow keys to be really small. On the plus side, the touchpad feels goodDESIGN:I got it in Dune. The keyboard is pretty light, and the fabric on the exterior side is nice. It makes the device seem less cold/icy and blends in or even complements furnishings, but the interior not so much. I believe it has a different texture than the outside (inside was less soft, a little more plastic-y, perhaps as a deterrent to sweat staining or something). The keyboard is advertised as ‘Covered with luxurious Alcantara material’, but for some reason the interior reminded me of a cardboard egg carton, particularly around the raised edges surrounding the keys. The key colors look a little plain. The magnets/connection points are secure and they won't detach unless you want them to (ask me how I know - the tablet’s kickstand slid off a small side table but I caught the keyboard and the magnet connection prevented it from falling.)PEN:Being able to have the Slim Pen 2 stored on the keyboard and charged is one of the best things about this keyboard. This is my first time using a pen to edit photos so I can’t make too much of a comment about it, but overall it felt much better than using a mouse or touchpad. The eraser on the end is a nice touch in addition to the clickable button. Handwriting recognition is also pretty good, when the words are written clearly. One thing to note - the pen’s pinned apps are limited to 4 programs of your choice at a time which felt like that could be a little frustrating. The pen is also light, almost like a plastic toy, but once the haptics start, it feels more like a real tool.I appreciated the staff paper in the journal app which would be perfect for musicians who can use it to compose or jot down musical ideas.OTHER THOUGHTS:One disadvantage for me was the folding upper section of the keyboard where the Slim Pen 2 is stored - trying to move the tablet+keyboard combo one handed around felt a little scary and messy since the folding section where the Slim Pen is stored can pop open and cause the keyboard to flap around in the air.In the end, without a keyboard, the Surface Pro’s full potential is limited for sure, but I did find myself checking to see what the other keyboard alternatives were.
One of the top main complaints about the Surface Pro type covers since its initial release is that it should have been included with the Surface Pro to begin with. But most Surface Pro buyers would not purchase it if it were the total cost of the devices, so I think Microsoft has had the right idea in selling them separately. With that said, you really have to consider how you use a keyboard and stylus to decide if it's worth the money for you. Don't purchase it just because you see the media and promotional materials pairing them all together. That's the beauty of them being sold separately. This particular product bundles the Surface Pro keyboard with the Surface Slim Pen 2, and is compatible with the new Surface Pro 11th edition, so its size covers the tablet screen perfectly. They're both also compatible with certain older models such as the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 9. I've only personally tested them with the new Surface Pro 11th edition. The Pro keyboard still uses the suede/microfiber-feeling material known as Alcantara. If you've used one of these keyboards before you should be familiar with the pros and cons. It feels premium and comfortable to touch but the material will wear over time. I don't expect any different from this keyboard. The Pro keyboard is powered by the Surface Pro itself, which it magnetically connects to, so you never have to worry about charging it as you would with Bluetooth keyboards. It will always be ready to use. The keyboard is also backlit despite its very thin profile, and you have the option to turn it off. I found typing decent with the Surface Pro keyboard but it will bother users who expect more key travel. There's just no way around it with a device as thin as this is.There is now a CoPilot key located on the right side of the keyboard where the Context menu key used to be on older keyboards. Unfortunately I haven't used it much because CoPilot hasn't been practically useful to me since it makes a lot of errors for my particular use case. But your mileage may vary. Microsoft is betting on AI and that's where the computing market is general is heading, so if they don't abandon it like Cortana (which arguably evolved to CoPilot anyway) maybe it will grow to be useful and I can be glad the dedicated key exists. There's no native way to remap the keys, but you probably can using third party software. The touchpad is large enough and glass, which feels great, but it doesn't have haptic feedback because there isn't the motor for it. That's reserved for the more expensive Flex keyboard model. There is a pen storage well placed above the keys and now left exposed for easy access to the Slim Pen 2 whenever you need it. Not only does it hold the Slim Pen 2 magnetically, it charges it as well. The Slim Pen 2 has a flat design, which I'm not the biggest fan of. Through online research, I found out this design is that of a carpenter's pencil. The thing is, one wouldn't use a carpenter's pencil to write or draw if they had the choice. So it seems like they chose this design so it's flat enough to conceal within the type cover. I can get used to it, but it's not my preference. I also found the button a bit hard to press, but that can be a good thing because I won't accidentally press it while I'm using the pen.Pressure sensitivity is nice but I'm not an artist nor do I draw. I don't know how to elaborate in a meaningful way for artists that would use the Slim Pen 2 to draw unfortunately. But it does ink at variable thickness based on the amount of pressure you use while writing/drawing with it.The top end of the pen serves as a digital eraser, which is nice and feels intuitive. The cool thing about the Slim Pen 2 is its haptic feedback. Previously people would suggest using a textured screen protector to simulate the pen on paper feel, but I never liked how those change the look of the screen just for the sake of that. With the haptic feedback, the pen feels like there's friction while writing/drawing with it, which just enhances the user experience.I can comfortably recommend it to Surface Pro users who type on-the-go, and have a need to use the pen a lot. But as a reminder, if that doesn't fit your profile, you don't HAVE TO spend that much. If you don't see yourself using the pen much or at all, don't get this. Get the cheaper model with just the keyboard. If you use the Surface Pro as a tablet most of the time and don't see yourself using a physical keyboard, or more comfortable using a bluetooth keyboard with better key travel. Otherwise the Surface Pro keyboard with Surface Slim Pen was made for the Surface Pro, especially the 11th edition. Literally.
This is the newest 11th edition of the Surface Pro Keyboard. Keep in mind this is not the Flex version, which the only difference between the two versions being that the Flex has wireless functionality. Having owned the previous edition of the Pro Keyboard, I wouldn't say this is a must-have upgrade. That said if you own a Surface and don't have a cover, this is definitely worth the purchase. So what's new to this edition? There aren't too many new features. The cover is still made out of Alcantara. First thing you may notice is that there's a Copilot key new as Microsoft has been pushing its Copilot feature pretty hard with its newer hardware, whether or not you find this useful depends on how much you use Copilot. This edition of the Pro Keyboard is backlit so it's a nice feature if your version doesn't have it. F1 also features a mute button for the onboard microphone. F5 is now used for altering the brightness of the keyboard backlight. This means that if you previously use F5 to play and pause content, this feature is now gone.I will say that typing on this new keyboard does feel better. It feels a lot closer to typing on a laptop's keyboard in terms of tactile sensation. I'm not sure if it's because the keys are slightly less depressed than the previous version or not.Not much to say about the trackpad; it works without any issues just like the previous edition of the Pro Keyboard.Considering the price that is paid for this Pro Keyboard, I am disappointed to see that it doesn't have a fingerprint scanner like some of the other Pro Keyboard versions. If you don't use this feature though then it won't matter. As for the slim pen second edition, this is still the same pen that has been out for the past two years or so. I personally like the tactile feel of it more than the Apple Pencil. The Surface pen works well and I have no complaints about it. Battery seem to last a decent amount of time.Keep in mind that this review is written after only owning the Pro Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen for about five days. My previous Pro Keyboard went bad after a year and a half of regular use so hopefully will be of better quality.
This Surface Slim Pen and Pro Keyboard combo are a great addition to a killer tablet. They up the level of productivity significantly, offering a great typing experience, very adequate and reliable touchpad, and a nice pen into a well package design. It's also backlit, and the palm rest is comfortably textured, providing an overall great experience that is certainly not a given for this form factor. Similarly, the touchpad is definitely solid. It's not very large, which is really the only knock I have against it. This is also in contract to the Flex, which utilizes the real estate at hand a bit more effectively. Other than the size, functionality is absolutely everything you'd expect from a Windows trackpad in 2024; responsive, with adequate tactile feedback and great gesture support. The Slim Pen, the other half of this combo, is also a great performer. Arguably the best part about this product is how they've designed the keyboard to stow the pen away. I frankly love the design of this; magnets on either side that allow the keyboard to "snap" into a higher stance, completely hiding the pen away. The pen, though, is regardless a worthy accessory. Responsiveness on the screen is great (up there with the best devices I've used), which lends itself to feeling pretty close to legitimately writing on a physical medium. The two buttons are effective; the side button allowing for right "clicks", and the top button serving dual functions allowing you to launch an app with a press or erase contents with a swipe on the screen. Tracking is slightly jerky at times, but overall, this finally feels like a cohesive pen experience out of a Surface device.Honestly, the price is a bit steep. However, if you can get past that, this is a near-essential accessory combo for your new Surface laptop. The decision of whether to get the Pro or Pro Flex combo comes down to your need for a truly wireless keyboard. For me, it's more of a nice to have. The overall design and usability of the Pro Keyboard and Slim Pen make them a great option.
The Surface Slim pen 2 and Pro keyboard convert the 2-in-1 Surface Pro into a sleek lightweight laptop and media creation tool. The keyboard instinctively latches correctly onto the tablet into the two designated connector slots via the magnets when positioned close and works perfectly with the Surface kickstand. The two slots provide connectivity and power for the keyboard and passthrough charging for the pen. There is a cavity at the top of the keyboard which houses and charges the slim pen when connected to the tablet. The design allows the cavity to be easily tucked underneath the tablet keeping the pen out of sight during use if preferred. The backlit QWERTY style keys are nicely sized and have good travel and accurate keystrokes. The keyboard backlighting has two brightness levels. The keyboard has a little noticeable flex at times but generally feels solid and performs well during most typing tasks. There is a dedicated Copilot key for launching the Copilot AI app, but otherwise, the keys are standard fare for a Windows PC. The integrated trackpad is accurate and is not prone to errant swipes and selections. There are no hardware click buttons but pad taps and double taps are sufficiently responsive and accurate. The Windows mouse app allows changes such as mouse speed for more granular fine-tuning.The Bluetooth enabled Slim pen 2 can also be used without the keyboard until it need charging. It functions well as a mouse style pointer, especially for media creation. It has good pressure sensitivity for freehand drawing and hand writing on the Surface. There are two buttons on the pen which function similar to mouse buttons and also allow pairing the pen via Bluetooth with other devices. The pen tips last a good while and are replaceable if or when they wear down. The tip doesn’t seem harsh on the Surface Pro glass, which is good because I’m having a hard time finding quality paper style protectors like I use on my other tablet. The pen charges wirelessly via the cavity on the Surface keyboard but does not have a dedicated charger.Overall, the Surface slim pen and keyboard cover are indispensable if using the Surface as a true 2-in-1. They don’t add much bulk or weight and work seamlessly with the Surface. The cover also helps keep the Surface screen protected when not in use. The keyboard is also available in matching colors for the Surface. The pen however only comes in black.

The keys have a nice click, travel distance, and feel to them. In addition, the keyboard is backlit and there is a key (F5) that allows you to adjust the backlight level. The is also a special new Copilot key that brings up Copilot which might be appreciated by people who favor using the keyboard for quickly launching applications. For me, I’m not sure how much of an approvement this is over just using your mouse to click on the Copilot app on the taskbar. The trackpad is also very responsive and recognizes my finger gestures and button presses well. My overall experience with the keyboard and trackpad is very good. The Slim Pen feels nice and light in the hand. There are two buttons on the pen. One button is on the top end that bring up OneNote and the other is on the side that seems to behave like the right mouse button. You can also personalize the actions for the buttons. I like that you can use the top end of the pen as an erasure as it mimics a real-life pencil. It performs very well for note taking and drawing.Overall, I can highly recommend this keyboard for Microsoft Surface Pro 11 owners that want to convert their great tablet into a great 2-in-1 tablet/laptop.
