Rachel is twenty-four, a lapsed Jew who has made calorie restriction her religion. By day, she maintains an illusion of existential control, through obsessive food rituals, while working as an underling at a Los Angeles talent management agency. At night, she pedals nowhere on the elliptical machine. Rachel is content to carry on subsistingβuntil her therapist encourages her to take a ninety-day communication detox from her mother, who raised her in the tradition of calorie counting. Rachel is suddenly and powerfully entranced by Miriamβby her sundaes and her body, her faith and her familyβand as the two grow closer, Rachel embarks on a journey marked by mirrors, mysticism, mothers, milk, and honey.

Milk fed is a phenomenal and beautiful work of art. The portrayal of the characters is not only an insightful examination of the intimacy of food and ones self image, but also a look at the inner workings of how we view ourselves and the world around us. Milk Fed is a continuation of Broder's ability to convey our deepest and darkest secrets and innermost ideas of the mind, in a way that everyone can relate to. The underlying ideas of the difficulty of controlling our thoughts and ideas on food, intimacy, relationships, and ourselves, is what makes this book so beautiful and powerful.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It wasn't like anything I had read before, and it was nice to have Jewish characters. I couldn't relate to some of the main character's sexual fantasies though. As a warning, some were mother and daughter themed, which I was not comfortable with. However, as you come to understand the main character's relationship with her mother, what she really craves is nurturing. There may be triggers for anyone who has ever had an eating disorder, as this too is a major theme. Great plot and definitely a page turner.

This book is raw, real and raunchy. The interplay with food, sex and power shows the struggle is real and many are dealing with beliefs that serve up misery. This book serves up a feast and asks 'are you willing to let go of old beliefs and follow your bliss'... I say YES
Such an amazing book I wish I could read it for the first time again.
