A Few Serious Flaws

I'm committed to the M18 line and have always been impressed with whatever tools I add to my ongoing collection. But this tool has a number of flaws that would seem easy enough to fix if the good people at Milwaukee had payed more attention during the tool's design phase. Here's what's wrong in order of importance:1. The two 1/8" bits that come with the tool snapped right at the chuck (both times) after a seriously limited amount of use, like literally after 15 linear feet of cutting. Buy RotoZip X-Bits; the one's that come with the tool are useless.2. The tool comes with 2 chucks (collets). You can only use bits that are the right size for these chucks. They're 1/8" and 1/4". So forget about using a variety of bit sizes as per your needs with the tool right out ... MoreI'm committed to the M18 line and have always been impressed with whatever tools I add to my ongoing collection. So forget about using a variety of bit sizes as per your needs with the tool right out of the box. I can't use my usual 5/32" bits, for example. I'm hoping I can buy other chuck sizes easily.3. The power switch is placed, shaped and sized kinda weird. In my first week with the tool I was always fiddling with it before figuring out how to push the switch to the ON position. It's not set up in a way that feels natural for a hand-held tool. You have to use your other hand to turn it on while you hold it.

Out of all my Milwaukee tools, ( and I have a collection,) this one has to be the one which gives me the most problems. I don't know what it is about with this tool. Possibly weak motor? I have been through many of these routers. Some don't even last a couple of weeks. I don't drop it or abuse it or anything. You have to be extra gentle and careful with this. Perhaps doesn't handle drywall dust well. Perhaps doesn't cope with a little bit of pink insulation. Perhaps doesn't have the muscle and durability of a Fuel. Before when it shut down on me. Milwaukee would send me a completely brand new tool replacement. They did this 2 or three times which was good. Now they don't want to send me a new tool. The tool doctor said now they have the motors and will send the tool ... MoreOut of all my Milwaukee tools, ( and I have a collection,) this one has to be the one which gives me the most problems. It's been over 7 weeks that I'm waiting for this cut out tool to fixed or replaced. This is unacceptable at all. I wish someone from Milwaukee would contact me and help. I just bought this tool a few months ago. Milwaukee doesnt deserve this bad review to tarnish their reputation. But their cut out tools need to be worked on and improved.

Good for small work, not long cuts.
30 October 2022

I’m not a full time rocker but have one for cleaning & cutting for remodeling. This tool has worked for me for smaller cutouts, but I have had a hard time for larger cuts (anything longer than 24”) without burning & breaking bits. If you are using smaller batteries to keep it lighter in weight, it burns thru them rather quickly.TLDR: good for receps and ceiling boxes, not good for long cuts

What an upgrade from using a drywall knife to cut out drywall. Using a knife has its advantages depending on where you are working because it doesn't kick up dust into the air, but this cut out tool makes work super easy. It has a tool free depth adjustment for quick and easy adjustments. On a fully charged 3.0 battery you can make up to 120 outlet box cuts. With a 4 pole motor the tool runs 28,000 RPMs. There is an on board LED light to provide lighting in dark work areas. Included with the tool is a belt clip for easy storage as you work, a 1/8 collet, a 1/4 collet, and a wrench. The tool is designed to blow dust away from you which it does a good job of doing. This tool eats up drywall quickly and I like to use both hands for best control. Aside from cutting out drywall for outlets, I have used also to remove sections of drywall for mold remediation, installing j boxes, basically any job that require drywall removal I have used this tool and it makes it a lot easier. I would say it's important to be mindful of the dust because clean up can be more costly than the convenience of using this tool. Overall well balanced and does exactly what it is designed to do.

I have wanted one of these for a while, but it’s just not a tool I need all the time. I was helping a friend install an outlet in a plaster house so I finally hit the bullet. This thing is awesome. It has more power and speed than I will ever need! It feels very solid and heavy, but not cumbersome. The weight helps you keep control with such a powerful motor. I love that you can adjust the speed and depth of the cut. I also love the belt clip. Very handy little tool to have just in case. If was in the drywall or electrical trade it would be indispensible for sure!

Been using for better part of 3 years. Ran thru two in this time. Vents on top clog up with dust from use. Causing it to over heat. Have to continuously lubricate. Only keep purchasing because I’m on the battery platform and no way around it. Work in comercial carpentry and do drywall all day.

Handy tool. We recently changed our tools to M18. Great tools however the Cut out tool or drywall Router as it is better known is not designed for long use. For a few cuts here and there in a lightweight drywall works great for dense board it can’t compete. The Dewalt Drywall tools lasted 100x longer than these have . We received them a few months ago. On the 4 man crew we are currently running we have 1 That is still operational. Everyone seems to start squealing rather soon vs the Dewalts and shortly I mean with in a few days to a couple weeks. The light would kick on when power switched to on and the head would attempt to move and then stop. Until it was bound so tightly it wouldn’t ever move by hand. Very versatile tool
9 May 2023

I love this m18 cutout tool. It’s a very versatile tool. I’ve used it to cut Sheetrock, wood etc. I also use it as a mini router and my metal cutting disc adaptor for my die grinder fits in it too. I would have given it 5 stars if it had just a bit more power and was brushless. I’m probably doing way more with it than I should be so I can’t fault the tool for that. I used my old one so much I burnt it up. This one was on its way the next day, that’s how much I like this tool.
