Milwaukee didn't do a compact corded router. Their previous models were all heavy duty fixed and plunge models (I have one of each type, with the fixed one providing the engine in my cast iron routing table, which I think is my third table). So I have a little bit of experience with routers. As one would expect with a compact router, it only supports a 1/4" collet. So starting a good collection of appropriately sized bits is probably part of the purchase consideration. My excuse for adding this tool to my arsenal was a hardwood deck project (Garapa) on Lopez Island, where several boards needed to be ripped lengthwise, and then finished with a rounding over bit for their entire length. All in all, I am quite pleased with the tool and would recommend it to anyone. One word of caution - if you do use it with tropical hardwoods, wear a mask. The fine dust it puts out is really nasty stuff.

Two things, when turning on there is a noticeable jerk so you need to be careful when close to your work. The big one was the lever that secures the motor in the shaft and the knurled wheel that controls the small adjustments to the router bit. The lever as delivered does not secure the motor well enough. As a result the motor will drop very imperceptibly and all of a sudden you are cutting to deep into your work. There is a tensioning screw but we found to eliminate this motor creep we had to tighten it so much the lever became a bit of a chore to release. Not a deal breaker but could have been designed better. Also the knurled wheel has quite bit of play. You need to make sure you take up the slack before making an adjustment or you will not get an accurate change in height of the bit.Based on our extended use we would buy this router again but just cannot give it a 5 as there is a bit of a learning curve due to the above before you can put into production.

That battery also lasted 2-3 hours of regular use with many bit changes.I have two complaints and recommendations to easily make this the obvious choice between all other routers.1. The tiny triangular thumb screw and vacuum adapter are tiny and a pain to take on and off.2. I have to regularly change bits and you have to remove this piece to access the spindle lock.I recommend moving the spindle lock button or the dust shield so you don’t have to remove it or modify ... MoreThis tiny router handled anything I knew at the last few weeks. Excellent tool with well-designed features.

I used my first compact router on a recent job site and fell in love with it. The one used was actually a Makita brand and I really enjoyed the ease of control with the smaller and lighter profile of the tool. I am already invested in the Milwaukee battery infrastructure so I decided to give this one a try and I actually like it a lot more. The build quality is about the same but I do like the adjustment controls a lot more and the collet has a feature where when you go to remove a bit and you use the provided wrench, as you spin the nut loose it actually lifts the collet up a bit and un-seats the bit. I believe the collet and retaining nut are fit together as a single part. I have since built a modular router table that locks in to the top of the M18 FUEL wet/dry vacuum and the “ammo box” Packout compact toolbox using 3d printed Packout cleats. It is made of 3/4” Baltic Birch ply with aluminum t-tracks inlaid for fence adjustment and an aluminum T-track fence. I use the M18 Packout vac for dust collection as well as to support the table from the bottom. I use this on an almost daily basis and love it.With or without the Packout items, I couldn’t recommend this little M18 compact router more! It is a fantastic little machine that has plenty of power and provides clean cuts.

Fails to hold depth
9 June 2023

I have encountered the same problem mentioned in in many other reviews: the router will not hold the desired depth. I was using a 1/4" spiral bit, nibbling away at a rabbet and not overloading, and the depth shifted a good quarter inch in the middle of my work. My first thought when things like this happen is to blame myself, not the tool. But I checked everything, especially the tightness of the collet, and all was in order. Then it happened again. Then I inverted the unit and pushed down on the base plate. Sure enough, it shifted. It seems the vibration during work causes the depth adjustment to fail and ratchet toward the next position. This makes the tool entirely unreliable for serious work. A shame, because I like everything else about it.

Love my M18 Compact Routers!
1 November 2023

Howdy! This is my second m18 compact router. I'm so happy with the first on that I keep in the work van that I bought another to keep in my shop. I can't believe the power and how easy it is to use. I've been around a while and have always had trouble with the cord hanging up and jacking up my project. Old routers were big and hard to watch the cutting area. These M18's are so light weight and easy to use with one hand I just think they are awesome! The vac attachment is so easy to put on and works great. Haven't used the straight edge attachment yet but it goes on easy and has good adjustments and seems plenty sturdy enough. Anyway, I love this router as well as all of the milwaukee M12 and M18 tools I have. I still have some of the corded tools I used back in the ... MoreHowdy! This is my second m18 compact router. M18 Fuel Compact Router, would recommend.
7 November 2023

Good cordless router. I've only used one other cordless router and I prefer this one. Depth adjustment is very easy to use. It comes with two wrenches, one for the collet and one for the shaft. Most small routers like this don't have that option. I like the dust collection attachment, it picked up 85% of the dust on basic roundover operation. I would recommend a light flexible dust hose, otherwise if pulls on the router. With the 5ah battery, the unit is a little top heavy. Seems very powerful and I like the speed adjustment. I was able to slow way down for some end grain hardwood and reduce burning. Definitely recommend this router, try to catch it on sale.

My best trim router
1 February 2023

I love it. Used it for first project today to trim plastic laminate on countertops. It is very convenient not worrying about a power cord that gets in the way. The LED lights shine brightly on the work. The best feature is the brake that stops the bit as soon as you turn off the switch. All others I have allow the bit to keep running after turning off the power. The router is well balanced with the way the battery mounts. I used my small 2.0 AH battery and only used about half of the battery's capacity. Enough left for finishing the job tomorrow. A larger capacity battery should naturally provide more run time, but would increase the weight, especially if trimming laminate on the narrow edge of the countertop. Mine has already cracked from routing with a hose attached for dust collection. There are complaints about slop once the router is locked down. There is an adjustment on the locking mechanism. It needs to be tightened very slightly. Once you adjust it, it is solid - zero slop. That is not an issue. The above are the issues.Milescraft makes a nice base - you are spending money to fix something that should have been designed better in the first place and you will still have a poorly designed dust extractor. Both the DeWALT 1/4 XR and the FLEX 1/4 are better thought out.Unfortunately, this is a poorly executed good design.Come on Milwaukee.

I wanted a light weight cordless router and since I already have a handful of M18 tools, it made sense to look at Milwaukee to leverage my existing batteries. The old corded model I have is a beast and will likely end up permanently in a router table because I will never drag it out for hand-held work again! I was surprised by the amount of torque this compact router has. I ran a 1/2" round over and several rabbit cuts in some maple for a set of drawers that I'm building into a cabinet and it didn't miss a beat. Not having a cord to deal with is such a pleasure and lets you keep the router moving without snagging on anything. Those snags can be the cause of little imperfections it the routed edge if you are not careful, so not having to worry about that is nice. The speed controller seemed to have a wide range of speeds although it would be nice to have a way to correlate the number on the dial to the actual RPM. The height adjustment is easy to do and offers enough precision for my purposes. Finally, I tried the dust collection adapter and it seems to fit well, but I didn't use it because I was outdoors and not concerned about the dust. I will give it a try next time I use the tool inside - I think this is a must-have for all tools like this that make a lot of dust, so I'm glad it was included. It is a bit fiddley to install and the knob-screw that holds it could be less delicate, or replace with a quick release latch to make it easier to put on and take off. Overall, I think it's a great tool to add to my collection and I would recommend it. I would like a hard case option to store it with the accessories and a few bits to keep it protected when not in use.
