Being the owner of a huge number of Milwaukee power tools this is the one that got away. The surge hydraulic impact driver doesn’t hold up. Less than 3 months into its life my first one failed. Relying on it for everyday work I was forced to buy a second thinking it was a fluke and I’d just send it in to be repaired then hold onto it as a spare. Second one failed before the other was even back from repair. Same issue, same problems, no longer impacted the screw head, fluid leaking out of the head. Decided to buy the standard non hydraulic unit then took a huge loss selling the repaired units at a huge loss. Pretty sad because all of my other tools are flawless.

I absolutely love this impact, except for one very huge issue. The chuck is the worst thing I've ever seen. I've had two of these, and both of them the chuck failed and would not hold bits almost at all the very first day i used it. I don't know what they have done because this is the only impact from Milwaukee I've ever had an issue with. I also have the m12 surge and it's phenomenal. Also doesn't have a problem with holding bits and I've been using it going on a month now. To be fair, it was five years old and I traded a tool for it to another guy in exchange for the impact. I’d dropped it off a roof and figured: “Well, it’s had its day.” BUT, when I bought a surge, had it less than 6 months, purchased brand new through Home Depot, used it four times and pulled it out of its Packout cushioned case and it wouldn’t drive a 2” screw I was upset. Like, furious! I exchanged it at Home Depot because I had the original receipt. All they could do was exchange it. I emailed Milwaukee but never heard back. My intention was to give this away as a Christmas gift but now I have a scuffed, wrinkled, crushed corner box covered with an abundance of Scotch Tape and shipping labels. I will still use this as a gift but I will be embarrassed by the condition of the box. I guess the downside of free shipping is minimum expense and effort on the shipper's part. So far this is my favorite 1/4" hex impact that I've owned. I've ran maybe 600 8x1 1/2" and 10x2 1/2" screws without draining the 5ah battery and haven't had any issues. It's very controllable and much quieter than my gen 3 m12 hex impact. I definitely want to buy the m12 surge in the future, but until then, I'm really satisfied with the m18 surge. I am a marine carpenter and specialize in repair and restoration of antique and classic wooden boats. So being able to carefully install parts without cracking them from over tightening the screws is a must. I feel like this application is perfect for the surge. The low noise level of the surge is awesome when working on boats. I would hit the trigger, but the chuck wouldn't spin when it was engaged on the fastener. If I pulled the trigger when it wasn't on the fastener, the chuck would spin fine. I took it to the local authorized service center and it was serviced and given back to me a couple weeks later. When I received it back, it had oil all over the inside of the plastic bag. I'm assuming this was possibly due to a hydraulic leak, but I have no idea. The hydraulic driver was so much more quiet than its counterparts that it felt weird. I noticed a slight dip in power and it was definitely a little slower, but the noise reduction was fantastic. I wouldn't use this for framing, or anything heavy duty.Anyway, I give it 2 stars because it stopped working after 6 months of lighter use. I babied this thing too because I loved it, and it's expensive. I only used it in confined spaces or at times when noise was an issue. It is new technology and probably still working the kinks out . This product is more effective as a paper weight. We are building a 100,000 sq ft steel storage facility. We We have 5-6 guys using impacts and self tappers everyday. We have always used Milwaukee m18. But recently the quality control has severely suffered. I have purchased 7 impacts over the past 10 days, and each one has quit working within 5-6 days of use. 1/4” quick chucks won’t hold bits after the 2nd day, and by 10 days in, they won’t even drive a self tapper.I have purchased over $50,000 in Milwaukee over the past 2 years, and had no problems at all. But now I have a a bunch of $200 impacts holding up a crew that costs $300/hr…I do not recommend this product
