I was very happy with my 34" ultrawide IPS monitor for a long time, but decided to upgrade to this Alienware OLED, and let me tell you, it makes more difference than I ever thought it could.Of course the draw of OLED is the deep, true blacks and high contrast ratio, but let me tell you the colors just absolutely pop. I was worried that the screen would be too dark like in earlier OLED monitors and TVs, but the QD-OLED tech has come a long way, so even during the day there are no issues. In a more dimly lit room, the HDR is just on another level, with small details that look absolutely dazzling. The 175 Hz refresh rate is buttery smooth, and there's very low latency so it's great for gaming. Build quality is likewise super solid. First off firmware cannot be updated by the user, meaning you're stuck with whatever you get. The glossy screen coating does tend to be reflective, so try to avoid having a window with sunlight or any bright lights behind you/in front of the monitor or it'll likely be a nuisance. Also, the $300 price difference between this unit and the freesync/165hz "DWF" version is a little high for what you actually get in terms of improvements. However, none of these downsides are anywhere close to dealbreakers for me.In general, the Samsung-sourced OLED panel is amazing, the build quality and features provided by Alienware/Dell are great, and out of the different monitors that use the same panel, Alienware is absolutely the way to go due to the awesome 3 year Dell warranty which includes burn-in warranty, which as of right now other manufacturers don't offer.

Also, downloading a third party ClearType such as Mactype or "Better ClearType" software can help reduce problems in windows (this solution is not universal).2. Launch day firmware issues, if you are going to be doing HDR gaming, check Reddit forums for a full fledge HDR Optimization guide.3. This monitor does have only one fan, but it is much less noticeable compared to the AW3423DW variant4. Burn-in, this is a niche concern nowadays considering OLEDs have gotten better preventing burn-in and the nature of QD-OLED is supposed to be even better at image retention and long term burn-in, but it is worth a mention. Use screensaver after inactivity for 1-3 min, the monitor burn-in preventative strategies, and 3-year warranty should keep a piece of mind.5. Black Gamma Flickering, this can be remedied by reducing the refresh rate, but I wouldn't bother. This only happens in mostly dark scenes, loading screens, and menus whenever freesync/gsync is on. Best to turn off VRR for that particular game or application if you are having issues.6. Blacks turn pink or gray when hit by light, caused by the lack of a polarizer of the display. This can be easily resolved by changing the lighting of your viewing environment.Now, here are the major cons that were an immediate turn-off for me, and this may vary from person to person.**Major Cons**1. Severe Migraines/Flicker like Symptoms, I do not know exactly why I am having mental and psychological issues using this monitor. This happens whenever I am playing games, doing productivity work, media consumption, etc. I tried HDR and SDR (@120 nits) and I still was having issues. This can be a multitude of reasons and factors at play here.The PWM frequency determined by brightness isn't high enough (sensitive to the ~10% of the population of device users), due to the nature of how OLEDs work, some individuals may experience migraines and severe digital eye strain, consider sticking with an LCD for now. Whenever I was using the AW3423DWF within 30 min to an hour I start having mental problems, however when I switched back to an IPS panel, I can use my monitor for hours on end before I need to take a break. I even went to an optometrist to check up on my eyes. At that point, I feel like I was going crazy with myself and did not understand the difficulties at play here. Maybe my body and eyes are not use to OLEDs as a daily driver, or psychologically my brain can not stand the sheer nature of OLEDs, bruh imagine being allergic to OLEDs lmao.Another culprit can be me not taking enough breaks but even still, I drink plenty of water, exercise and always follow the "20-20-20" rule and still had some issues.The weird pixel layout or text fringing can be another culprit, but I do not seem to have issues with it.All in all, if you know you are having problems using an OLED display (Phones, TVs, Monitors), well you are going to have similar, if not more problems using this one as well.2. Questionable packaging, smudges, and marks on the display. I cannot fix the smudges made by the foam.3. New Tech and being an early adopter, if you do not mind trying out new tech and keeping your expectations in check, get this monitor as it does support firmware updates in the long haul. If not, wait for more options to come out, as this is the first QD-OLED generation to be made by Samsung display. At CES now, they are already resolving some issues with 2nd gen QD-OLED technology.In conclusion, while the 'F' variant is better than its twin sister, the AW3423DW, it's still got problems. The minor cons may have been relatively well known for the general consumer base regarding this monitor, but if you are someone that frequently has problems with OLEDs in general, or has mental and psychological issues with certain display technologies, I would not recommend picking up this item.

In games I find it to be a good benefit for immersion.Beyond that, the widescreen is very handy when referencing multiple documents and files while compiling text-based documents, as I have space to put things side by side for cross referencing and fact checking before saving ahead of future publishing.On gaming and media content this monitor is very nice, especially in HDR and the natively deep blacks adds to the immersion of games with dark scenes or backgrounds (sci-fi and space games especially).I agree with reviews elsewhere that the sample and hold method of the QLED pixel display does cause some issues when viewing tv/movie recordings with horizontal panning landscapes or some objects moving horizontally on the screen.There are instructions available online for getting 10-Bit color to work at 165Hz refresh rate and I can verify this is working correctly. Color calibration out of the box is very good though I adjusted it slightly for personal taste with a guide elsewhere for reference.Overall I rated it 4 stars out of 5 as there are better monitors out there but for what this one is I am generally happy with it, as I chose this monitor as a middle ground that should ideally last me a few years until computer hardware catches up to the future generations of panels at 4K or greater and 240Hz refresh rates that are coming soon.

The DisplayPort cables consists of one with a full-size connectors on both ends and another with a full-size DisplayPort connector on one end and USB-C on the other.For ports there are 2 DisplayPort (1.4), 1 HDMI (2.0), 4 USB-A 3.2, and a headphone jack. The monitor itself is VERY large, even larger than I was expecting coming from a 32â monitor. This is especially true when connected to the stand. The stand is very stable and has height, tilt, and swivel adjustments. Itâs also got a great cable management system that, along with the plastic rear cover, almost completely hides the cables. That being said, it adds a ton of depth, mostly to the rear of the display. This means putting the monitor somewhat flush to the wall is not possible unless you replace it with a monitor arm (a 100mm x 100mm VESA mount is built-in). To get sense for how big this 34â ultrawide display is, itâs roughly the same height as a 27â monitor, but about 34% wider. The display is curved, which I typically donât prefer but seems appropriate for this size of display and is not something I notice at all during regular use.Getting connected to my PC, my first order of business was to go to Dellâs website and download the latest firmware, as I heard there was some issues with HDR on earlier revisions of the firmware. Once that was done setup was easy since I already have an Alienware PC and the lighting and other effects are managed through the same Alienware Command Center. The monitor settings themself can be accessed and adjusted via a joystick at the bottom of the display, which was relatively easy to navigate, though I will likely download the Dell Display Manager to further manage this in the future. There are several preset display options, though I ended up settling on âCreatorâ for SDR and âDisplayHDR True Blackâ for HDR as these appeared to be the most âaccurateâ picture settings. I found the that while the display is 165Hz, it was automatically set to 60Hz by Windows when I first plugged it in, so something to check.With all this dialed and getting into some games, I was astounded mainly by the difference in contrast to my previous IPS display. The ability to display the full range of bright and dark scenes without having the blacks go gray makes such a big difference in my enjoyment of all my games, but especially ones that feature a mixture of both bright and dark scenes like The Last of Us. Colors are vibrant and appear accurate in both HDR and SDR modes (Dell also ships a calibration report in the box, which is a nice touch). I definitely noticed the response times while playing Halo as well and I felt a lot more connected to the actions I was taking in game. The resolution of 3440x1440 is just sharp enough at this display size and has the added bonus of putting less demand on my GPU. The AW2423DWF is not G-SYNC Ultimate certified like the more expensive AW2423DW, but itâs still G-SYNC Compatible and in general all of the games I played were smooth.A little background. I game in my basement away from any windows. Iâve heard comments that the curve of the screen and the coating can result in raised black levels from other light sources and I do notice that somewhat with my overhead lights turned on, but itâs personally not an issue for me. Iâve also read about some issues with the monitor specifically relating to itâs HDR 1000 mode that were supposedly addressed in the latest firmware update. I did briefly try this mode and found it just seemed to raise the brightness of the whole image up, which I did not prefer. The HDR 400 mode was plenty bright for me in the room that Iâm in.The nature of OLED technology means there is an inherent risk of burn-in, which can occur when a static image is displayed on the screen too long and is then permanently retained on the screen, usually taking the form of a shadow. Dell has tools built into the display to help mitigate this, including a âpixel refreshâ that is prompted to run after every 4 hours of cumulative use. The panel refresh takes less than 10 minutes, though depending on what youâre doing the notification may interrupt an important game. It fortunately does not need to be run immediately and if you are currently using the monitor you can set it to run the next time the display goes to sleep. Dell does offer a 3-year warranty that DOES cover burn-in, so that is nice peace of mind at least. All this just means you have to be mindful about not displaying the same content onscreen for too long and productivity/work is not a good use case for this display. Another downside of this panel is the unique subpixel layout results in subpar text rendering compared to LCD displays. Itâs not awful by any means and the larger text used in game menus do not show this issue, but itâs again another reason not to get this monitor for productivity/work. Iâd also recommend setting Windows to turn off the display after 5-minutes.Overall Iâm really happy with this display. I canât think of a single thing Iâd want from it that it doesnât have. I know Iâm going to stress about the burn-in thing, but Iâll accept that trade-off or the experience I get and I think with my usage gaming a few times a week itâs not really going to be an issue for me anyway.

Without the stand, it weighs in at 13.8 lbs which is reasonable for most ultrawide monitors. But more importantly, the plastic is sturdy, the RGB lighting is consistent, and the control joystick on the bottom of the display is intuitive to use compared to a lot of other OSD adjustment controls Iâve used across other monitors.If you intend to use the stand, itâs a pretty good stand. You have height adjustment, vertical tilting, and 20 degrees of swivel, but zero rotation. So you wonât be able to rotate into portrait mode with the included stand, but I think thatâs expected for a monitor designed for gaming.ON-SCREEN CONTROLS / OPTIONSFor the OSD menu, Alienware opted not to inundate users with too many confusing options, and I honestly appreciate that. Gamers want to set up quickly without having to spend too much time navigating complex menus to get the most out of their monitor.The simplified quick menu gives access to your presets, a dark stabilizer, an input selector, brightness/contrast adjustments, and âAlienVisionâ effects. The advanced menu adds settings for game-related functions such as the Console Mode and a Frame Rate counter, as well as AlienFX Lighting options, and advanced Display calibration options that also include HDR settings and PIP/PBP.DISPLAYIn the box, Alienware includes their calibration tests for the monitor. They know that gamers are paying a premium for this product, and I think itâs the right call to give that extra assurance that their monitor has been properly inspected and calibrated from the factory. And if youâre concerned about OLED burn-in, Alienware is going as far as providing a 3-year Advanced Exchange Service so that if a replacement becomes necessary, it will be shipped to you the next business day during your 3-year Limited Hardware Warranty.The QD-OLED display itself is vibrant & punchy. Thanks to the incredible contrast of having individually lit pixels instead of a backlight panel, when a pixel is black, it is deeply black, and itâs strikingly noticeable for games and movies.If youâre a gamer, I think youâll find that playing games on the AW3423DWF will bring new life to any experience. From 2D indie titles to 3D AAA games, I havenât found a single game that hasnât looked better on the QD-OLED display. And if your game has good support for HDR, the QD-OLED display will do a fantastic job at keeping darker elements more dimly lit while brighter elements will be more accurately lit without being crushed or washed out.And in my opinion, having this in tandem with a 165Hz refresh rate makes this Alienware monitor among the best for games that deliver fast action and need quick response times. Whether you play competitive games or even indie titles that just need you to react quickly, this display has low response times that will be excellent for those demanding immersion and fast action.On top of that, the display has FreeSync Premium Pro and G-SYNC Compatibility, so as long as you have a compatible GPU, youâll be able to reduce frame stutters in games where the frame rate canât lock to the displayâs native refresh rate.One caveat to mention is that because of the triangular subpixel layout, text may not perceptibly be as sharp as some other monitors, but using a free tool like Better ClearType Tuner for Windows can lead substantially better results. That being said, not everyone is sensitive to this kind of thing, and I personally did not find this aspect to affect my day-to-day use. And for context, I am a professional software developer, and so I spend a lot of time looking at text throughout the workweek. As someone who has used 6+ ultrawide monitors for both work and play, I still feel that this Alienware has been the best experience Iâve had for both use-cases.CONCLUSIONThe Alienware AW3423DWF is an excellent option for those looking for an ultrawide monitor for gaming. I could see details in mass effect legendary edition that Iâd never seen before now despite having played it many times through. Even in a much more demanding game such as Forza Horizon 5 there was never any tearing, stuttering or artifacting of any kind while I play. All the additional color spectrum from the quantum dot technology and the perfect blacks of the OLED panel combined with the ultra-high refresh at 165hz make for something I would easily call the complete package. It even has RGB lighting on the backside to light up your wall and add to your gaming experience. OLED solves the problems Iâve had with other gaming monitors of the past with better colors, better blacks, better refresh, and no light blooming effects from LED lighting on a normal LCD display. I cannot find a single thing to say about this screen that would bring it down in any way. Iâm blown away by how good it is and very happy to be gaming on an OLED screen at last on my PC. The wait was long, but this screen has made it worth it and I canât recommend it enough.

With color and brightness to my liking, now I could focus on the remainder of the experience. 21:9 Ultrawide compatibility has become much more common in current games and the subtle 1800R curve fits the 34" footprint nicely. The unit's build quality is solid with the exception of some "squishiness" at the edges of the panel that I felt while adjusting the swivel axis. Overall performance of the monitor is top notch! OLED is on a whole other level when it comes to responsiveness and "feel" while gaming. The DWF tops out at 165Hz though, and I found my system was able to push well beyond that cap leaving me wanting for a 240hz option. While still within my return window the LG45GR95QE-B received a substantial promotional discount as well so I went ahead and picked up one of those for comparison. It was a really difficult decision as to which monitor I felt was a better fit for me. I preferred the color and brightness of the QD-OLED panel on DWF, and the promotional price made an extremely compelling argument. The LG has a much lower PPI at the same 3440 x 1440 resolution, which is unfortunate, but the higher FPS ceiling and immersion factor of the 45" 800R LG panel is what ultimately won me over. Without the aggressive promo on the LG however, I think the DWF would have been what I kept. In summation, if your system is not going to surpass 165Hz, there is absolutely no reason to look further. This really is a fantastic straight forward monitor that is 100% deserving of the praise it's received. Best in class pricing, user firmware updateability, strong performance, and the longest manufacture's warranty on the market!
