Mountainsmith Pyrite 7075 Trekking Poles

The Mountainsmith Pyrite 7075 Trekking Poles are designed to keep you comfortable through long hikes across uneven terrain. The aircraft-grade 7075 aluminum is sturdy enough for big expeditions, but it comes in a lightweight, ergonomic package. The Pyrite boasts a molded Cork and EVA foam handle for comfort and extra grip, while the carbide tips grip the ground, rocks, scree, or river bottoms of your wanderings. You'll be working out your arms, but they won't be feeling it thanks to the spring-loaded, anti-shock system.

A great assist

I used to chuckle at hikers who used trekking poles . . . until I gave in to advancing age (55+) and bought a pair myself. I used these Mountainsmith Pyrite trekking poles on a recent hike to the Adirondack Mountain’s Seward Range and found them reliable, functional, and of great use both with a full pack and just a day pack. The poles helped me balance with a full pack on a good, rolling trail, allowed me to gain additional power using my upper body on ascents, and provided stability and eased stress on my knees and ankles on the descent. The poles are lightweight, have comfortable grips and wrist straps, are easy to adjust and most importantly, they maintain their locked height! Another bonus: they shorten enough to fit diagonally across my checked bag for airline ... MoreI used to chuckle at hikers who used trekking poles . . . until I gave in to advancing age (55+) and bought a pair myself. These poles worked good the first couple times, but then they started to twist to that I was having to readjust the length frequently. brought them in the snow and broke them. Probably worth spending a little extra for better quality!

Purchased for my wife at Christmas because we like to trail hike and I thought it would be nice to try some poles next time. She used them last week and loved them! I gave it a try and is I'm going to purchase my own. She said they kept her stable and won't go without them from now on. I would like a better locking system only due to my size, 6'2" 290. I feel I might compress them at times but I didn't have that issue. These are great poles and the price point is outstanding. Worth the purchase."

Great entry level Trekking Poles
5 September 2019

I bought a set prior to backpacking and hiking trips in the Wind River Mountains. I used them on 6 backpacking trips and 15 day hikes this past summer. I had no issues or failures.

Great to feel stable!

I have used these a few times now from 1_5 mile hikes and backpacking. I love that they have a little shock absorber to give a little but not too much. Have performed as I would expect.

Hiking Poles
13 January 2019

I have used these poles for a few years and in general they work well. However, if you look at what makes up the tightening mechanism, you will be disappointed with the plastic parts inside the poles. They can get stripped easily and break. I'm waiting to see if the poles are covered under the company's warranty.

Great comfortable handle and overall look and feel. Problem is that the locks come undone and the poles shorten unexpectedly, and one of the baskets already cracked after 6 uses.

Sturdy with drawbacks

Bought these as a inexpensive option to hold me over until I plan I getting a more expensive pair this fall. I wanted to try a pair with twist locks to see how they perform. I have to say they are great at holding and can hold my entire body weight 205 lbs and a 15 lb pack without the slightest of slippage. They inspired great confidence until a few miles in then they started collapsing on me. I then retightened then felt great again then all of a sudden collapsed again. After evaluating what was happening I found that as I was hiking was inadvertently twisting the pole counter clockwise while it was planted in the ground and loosening the lock. After evaluating what was happening I found that as I was hiking was inadvertently twisting the pole counter clockwise while it was planted in the ground and loosening the lock. Once I figured this out I was more conscious of how I was using my pole and will periodically plant my pole and give it a light clockwise twist to ensure the lock is snug. Now that I do this I have gone on a 16 and 18 mile hike without a single slip again although I did break off both my mud baskets and now they need to be replaced. So if you don’t mind thinking while you use them they are a sturdy pole with locks that won’t slip. Good inexpensive pole. Also top of handle on pole is a hard plastic and could be improved but the cork on the handle is nice.

Very light

These sticks are even lighter than my old faithfuls from swissgear. The bright red aluminum and cork handles ( just like my old faithfuls ) have allowed me to transition without any weaning! They cost more, but are worth it due to the lightness and similarity!

As a 60-year-old new hiker, I bought these 18 months ago and never go without them now. I like to challenge myself and these poles hold up well when I'm climbing in and out of steep creekbeds and up and down woodland trails.
