In 1969, Seattle engineer and lifelong mountaineer Larry Penberthy formed Mountain Safety Research as a one-man crusade dedicated to improving the safety of climbing equipment. The fuel behind Larry's passionate fire was a simple belief that still drives our team today: The idea that better, safer, more reliable equipment is the key to unlocking greater adventures. MSR has strong perspectives on how a product should work based on their own experiences in the wild places they love. They believe that innovative solutions are bred by challenging convention, and that functionality, simplicity and reliability are the governing elements of enduring design. The MSR Alpine 2 Pot Set is made from durable stainless steel. Reliably standing up to even the most extreme conditions. The efficient nesting design saves valuable space for other important items. The lid fits both pots and can also be used as a plate. Included in the MSR Alpine 2 Pot Set is a 1.5L stainless steel pot and a 2L stainless steel pot, the lid/plate, a pan handler and stuff sack. It’s perfect for heavy use by frequent travelers, or by guides and institutions, where you’ll be preparing a lot of meals on a wide range of adventures.

Classic & simple pot set perfect for car camping. I’ve had a set of these pots for close to 20 years and recently just purchased a second set for my new camper. They tuck perfectly into my camp kitchen box & can handle cooking almost everything. The lid doubles as a fry pan, though it’s better for things like a quick sauté with lots of oil rather than pancakes (it’s hard to flip & easy to accidentally burn the cakes). These pots clean up easily inside & out, in case you cook over a fire with them. The pot grip is reliable and sturdy, which is great when draining a full pot of pasta’

I bought this set last summer and used it on a 6 week road across Canada where we predominately camped in National Parks. I was so disappointed with this set after reading all the 5 star reviews. If all you're doing is boiling water or cooking soupy meals then this cookset should meet your needs, however it is terrible for anything else. The raised centres in the pots and pan means that any oil etc you put in runs out to the edges. Nothing stays in the centre which is the hotest part since it sits right on the stove. In short, everything burns! Even with constant stirring it's impossible to sautee veggies. We tried to make pancakes, cook eggs, and just plain reheat some leftovers all with disastrous results.

One of the first things that I bought when I got into backpacking in the 1990s was an Alpine cookset. That pot set has travelled all over the country with me from backcounty canoeing in the Boundary Waters to sea kayaking in the Aleutian Islands. I lost my XPD heat exchanger in the Bering Sea, scorched and warped the pot lid using it as a heat diffuser, and otherwise dented blackened and abused this cookset for nearly thirty years before losing it to theft. I'm back for another.I do use lighter Titan pots for backpacking these days, but if you're looking for a cookset that will never wear out and you don't mind a touch more weight, the Alpine is the way to go. It's perfect for car camping, canoe camping, sea kayaking and any other outdoor activity where you're not ... MoreOne of the first things that I bought when I got into backpacking in the 1990s was an Alpine cookset. This is my second 2 pot set, there was nothing wrongnwith the first set outside of where it may be hiding amongst my collection. I could not find a definite answer anywhere on how everything would nest with my XGK so i picked up the set a fry pan 2 plates and 2 bowls. In my opinion with this setup the bowls are too small of a diameter causing the XGK to not set low enough when nested inside (it would probably work with a smaller stove). But the fry pan does nest nicely under the large pot and the plates fit perfectly under the fry pan. It actually all fits back in the bag or straps together very well. I will probably use it without the smaller pot which leaves enough space for several of the spice containers, the maintenace kit silverware and small folding serving ... MoreThis is my second 2 pot set, there was nothing wrongnwith the first set outside of where it may be hiding amongst my collection. Simple set of sturdy, nesting, 'lightweight' pots. Working great so far, seem to be the perfect sizes for me (serves 1-3 people depending on the meal). The handle is easy to operate and feels good in the hand, even with gloves on. The included pullcord mesh storage bag is also great for keeping everything together. Overall nothing to complain about, just another solid product from MSR!
This is the only set I own for all my camping needs. Day one I dropped a large pot full of water on the asphalt road while carrying it, there are a few dents now that absolutely do not affect anything. Other than that drop there is no damage from 8 years of use. This is the only light piece of gear I can kick around without worrying. I burned food in it rushing and washed it with sand and rocks - 0 damage. It is light enough for multi-day backpacking trips, but sturdy enough to fight off a bear in a frontcountry site :D. The fact that the handle is completely not a part of the pot is awesome, cuz if I ever lose or brake it I can use pliers or anything else to safely lift it. Another thing I like that I can take only one of the pots on shorter trips and lid works ... MoreThis is the only set I own for all my camping needs. Another thing I like that I can take only one of the pots on shorter trips and lid works with both. The lid also can be used as frying pan ( not for eggs but I did cook fish in it with no issues). I was looking at other fancy AL and TI sets... but I don't want my food to touch AL ( even if health concerns are totally BS I just don't want to), while Ti has nice properties - it is not suitable for real cooking. This set it so nice that here I am spending 10 min of my life letting strangers know how much I like it :D. The only thing that bothers me is that it is double the price I paid in 2015... this is prob due to the higher cost of everything ( material, shipping, and hopefully MSR employees salaries).Anyway - if you concerned about AL, or don't want to be replacing your AL non stick gear every season and actually do anything besides boiling water - get this set and never look back. MSR also makes larger ( 3 pot, 3 lids set) that will be more suitable for 2+ people groups.
I was debating which material to chose for my first cooking set. I have selected this one because of durability ( that has proven itself when I dropped bigger pot full of water on solid rock - small dent that doesn't affect anything). While you are getting more weight in your backpack it totally worth it.Heat distribution is nice if your stove is not on full blast.I have selected this one over aluminum because of it is safer for cooking ( a lot of people have different opinions on this one but I like to minimize my exposure to toxins). I have also selected this over titanium because while titanium gives you awesome weigh reductions in real world it is only good for boiling water or melting snow. Bought used from a coworker ~2008, been with me on every camping/festival/backpacking trip since. Built tough, 10 years in just a few dents, and has been through some scorching. Easy to clean, a bit on the heavy side, compacts nicely, small stove (pocket rocket) and fire gear can easily fit in pot. thin, so a bit of hot spotting on a stove. Can double boil as well, really versatile set and while one may need solid prep and be vigilant on stirring to prevent burns, you can totally cook on these at home, super durable and long lasting. No lid venting, but can invert it and leave a crack to allow venting and prevent over-boiling.
I have had this same pot set since at least 1995 and it looks like they have kept it the same and for good reason. It has been used on backpacking trips (when ultralight wasn't a think yet). canoe trips and car camping and it has many years left in it with no deformation whatsoever. It is not non-stick so beware if you try to fry anything and your stove doesn't simmer. To combat this I have used a heat diffuser (metal disc with holes) and it's worked fine.I would buy it again but I think it will outlast me so no need.
I am using the stainless steel MSR Alpine 2 Pot Set on a few different types of cooking surfaces. I cook on a MSR Dragonfly stove, a Titanium wood burning Y6722 stove by Tomshoo with a Bunsen burner screen insert, and a Lodge Sportsman's grill with charcoal. Sometimes I bake with the Backpacker's Pantry Outback Ultralight Oven. Other cooking situations call for the use of the MSR Heat Exchanger. But mostly I cook with the Alpine pot without accessories. I bake cornbread, baked apples, pizza, Thai shrimp pasta, melted snow for water, boiled water for a fresh Maine lobster, and heated oil to make Indian apple stuffed fry bread. I have even used the lid as a skillet for strawberry cream cheese filled crepes. In all of these and other cooking situations I have found the internal cooking surface a good heat conductor with an even internal cooking surface. And the boil time the same compared to other stainless steel pots. The Alpine 2 is durable. I will say using the lid as a cutting surface is not ideal. Your knife will dull quickly and the stainless steel will scratch. This is not a lightweight backpacking pot set. It is great for kayak expeditions, backpacking base camping, car camping, and Bushcrafters. From the Florida sandy beaches to Maine snowfall, this MSR Alpine pot set keeps shining. The person cooking only limits the cooking performance of this pot.
