The MSR WhisperLite International combines the reliability and durability of the classic MSR WhisperLite stove with multi-fuel burning capabilities, making it ideal for international travelers and backpackers who require flexibility in the type of fuel they burn. The WhisperLite International includes swappable Shaker Jets to equip it for use with fuels varying from white gas to kerosene to unleaded gasoline. The self-cleaning Shaker Jets utilize a weighted needle to allow fuel to flow without risk of blockage from unvaporized and solidified fuel particles. When the stove isn't in use, you simply press to the needle to push any debris through the jet's opening. On white gas, the WhisperLite International boils a liter of water in 3.5 minutes. Kerosene provides better burn time (155 minutes vs. 110 minutes) but takes 4.4 minutes to bring a liter of water to boil. Broad, lightweight support legs and serrated pot supports provide solid stability. These elements are constructed of stainless steel to ensure durability at a minimal trail weight. The MSR WhisperLite International stove includes a fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small parts kit, stuff sack and instructions. NOTE: Fuel Bottles are sold separately.

Bemused why no one has reviewed the international. Mine was a present for my 21st birthday, and I haven't looked back since. From New Zealand, England, Uganda, Pakistan, Scotland and in between the MSR has burned hot and strong. Once you have learnt the dark art of low pressure burning to simmer, or placing rock around the burner to elevate the pot for a gentler heat, you are away. My fuel of choice was a Mobil product called Pegasoll AA, though this has been discontinued and the closest now available is Coleman Fuel. Just because it burns a shade cleaner and less risk of a risotto tasting more like Shell 95 than Chanel No.5. You will have to change jets for the heavier fuels of course. I am on my second pump assembly due to age hardened plastic breaking, otherwise everything is original. I did buy the titanium tool spoon, because it is Titanium and a spoon is always easier. It is compact, reliable and easy to use. You will learn a lot on how to get the best out of it, the windshield is such a good idea and is in constant use. The only embuggerance is taking the fuel bottle on flights, airlines do not allow it, so overseas trips are prefixed with a new bottle that has never seen fuel. I'll leave with the fathers thoughts on just how quiet it is compared to his Optimus 8r. "that'll be useful for a sneaky brew first thing at camp"( the 8R had all the finesse of Concorde on full after burner).

In addition to the included literature, MSR also offers video illustrations on the Web.

The WhisperLite outputs a lot of heat and is able to hold larger pots, so you can cook for larger groups of people compared to typical canister backpacking stoves. There are many complaints about how this stove is complicated, fussy, and not user friendly. It's very difficult to do any cooking on it beyond boiling water. You have to service it every now and then, which is a lot more than the basically-zero maintenance required for canister stoves. I could go on... These are all true and I won't dispute them. With isobutane canisters, I'm sure you all have been in that situation with 2 or more canisters with 30-40% fuel, but you want to start the journey with a full reservoir.Another benefit is if you ever need firestarter in a pinch, you can just pour some fuel on the wood and you're good to go.Lastly, you can use white gas for multiple appliances. There are Coleman lanterns and larger multi-burner stoves. There are even some old catalytic heaters than run on white gas. Granted, this applies to propane as well. Propane has a lot more potential uses, but it isn't great for backpacking.

I bought my Whisperlite International back 1n 1997 for hiking - or tramping as we call it in New Zealand - and used it every weekend that I could get away into the hills. Later it came with me on my travels after university; through North America and Western Europe. The whole time I never had a single problem with my Stove, and lots of great memories were made. Then life happened - work, family etc. and it (and all my other gear) lived in a cupboard, barely seeing the light of day. A few weeks ago, in anticipation of getting out in the hills again now that my kids are old enough to join me, I got everything out and checked it. I needed to order a new pump for my Whisperlite International as the plastic had cracked around the control knob. When the pump arrived, I ... A few weeks ago, in anticipation of getting out in the hills again now that my kids are old enough to join me, I got everything out and checked it. I needed to order a new pump for my Whisperlite International as the plastic had cracked around the control knob. When the pump arrived, I used a wire bender on the latch arm of the stove to match the newer design and work with the pump's new wire flame controller. It works as well as the first time I fired it up all those years ago and is more controllable now with the new pump. There's something about the motions of priming this stove, the sounds and smells that it makes, that takes me back to those earlier adventures and travels that make it one of my treasured possessions. Performance wise, the stove is great. Originally it was all or nothing with the flame, but the new pump has improved that. Thank you for a great piece of kit.
Does not work with Canadian unleaded gas because of additives. I had an older model that had flawless operations for 20 years. It became unreliable and needed constant maintenance to unblock the jet. I had no complaints due to the age. I bought a new stove and it has the same blockage each time I use unleaded gas. Often blocks before water even boils. It’s due to all the new additives in modern gas not the stove. Perhaps MSR should redesign for this new reality.
Purchased some accessories after receiving my very own MSR burner/stove! (Sold by Backcountry gear). Totally Upgrading our somewhat Limited traditional campfire fuel options (charcoal/biomass/firewood). Options for Cooking now include: Propane (lpg) Iso butane, white gas, vehicle gas (petrol), + kerosene!? That is awesome! I'm thinking maybe diesel would work but I don't like diesel so I'm not even going to investigate that one ! Base camp vehicle is outfitted with solar panels/batteries/inverters originally deemed suitable for everything electricity typically accommodates. However experience reveals that it is a little bit challenging for everything electrical + cooking when the sun is hiding behind the clouds LOL. Oh wait this review is supposed to be about the ... I truly love the Elegant Simplicity of it's mathematically correct physical form and function complimented & enhanced with the metallurgical genius of brass and stainless steel! so awesome! If Leonardo da Vinci had designed/engineered a Camp stove The result would be a Whisperlite Universal!
I really appreciate this stove as a liquid fuel stove as opposed to a gas fuel stove, mainly as a way to constantly keep fuel topped off rather than worry about bringing multiple canisters if one is getting close to empty. It needs some slight maintenance, but nothing too hard to be worried about; mainly just O-ring replacements. One complaint I have with this is with the size of the stand that you place your pot on top of. While it handles most pots very well, some pots with a smaller diameter cannot properly sit on all three parts of the stand. I noticed this with my Toaks 750mL pot which is 3.75 inches (~95mm) diameter, so do make sure to bring a slightly wider pot. Other than that, it provides more than enough heat to boil 2 cups of water in only a few minutes ... This is a fantastic product. You can cook in this burner or boils water. It produces a great flame and the fuel is very efficient. It transitions easily between the bottle and canister. The heat shield are also also great, light, and easily stowed. The whole stove minus the bottle easily fit in a small bag. The only negative feature is that it can be messy when the pump is taken out of the bottle, it drips fuel and must be dried before storing. But otherwise this is a great product.
The MSR isobutane cartridge is 20% propane so it works down to -10F or better. Can tip the cartridge upside down to feed liquid so the propane doesn't all burn off, leaving just isobutane that won't work below 11F. Has the liquid pump and hose so it will burn white gas or kerosene at any temp. The burner doesn't sit on top of a tippy fuel cartridge and is nice and wide to accomodate larger pots, but narrow enough for the small pots too. Fuel cartridges are easy to find and kerosene and white gas are pretty much everywhere. The cartridges have a weight chart so you can determine the fuel level on a scale or just place them in water and read it. We had troubles before with a standard n-butane burner in winter, they don't work below 31F. The only alternative is bulky ... You can get tiny cartridges for a quick pack-in up to large ones for car camping.I had the international version many years ago and it worked great, but the cartridges are more convenient. Also, some national forests/parks etc. will not let you use liquid fuel due to instant shutoff requirements especially in fire seasons.
I’m 54 years old and I purchased this stove in my early twenties for use in the San Isabel national forest, Colorado. This stove worked flawlessly for my hiking trips through the trails of the collegiate range of the fourteeners. I have also used this stove on months long motorcycle trips throughout the country in all types of weather conditions with no problems. I packed this stove away for about 20 years and recently got it out to prepare for an overnight backpacking trip. The stove started right up ,although I noticed it needed some O-ring replacement maintenance, it still burned like it should. This thing is definitely old reliable and I highly recommend it.Happy trails, Woody
