Muir Energy - Cacao almond Mate Gels

Finally, an energy gel that tastes like actual food and not a chemical slurry. That's because Muir Energy gels are made from actual food, with plant-based ingredients you'll recognize from the produce aisle. Muir Energy gels come in either "fast burning" or "slow-burning" varieties. The fast-burning gels are made from fruits like blueberries and bananas with simple sugars that are rapidly digested, providing a quick burst of energy to break a bonk on your trail run up to Bishop Pass. The slow-burning recipes contain nuts and seeds with complex carbohydrates and fats -- energy sources that are metabolized slowly to generate sustained energy. Several flavors include yerba mate for a boost of natural caffeine. Muir Energy gels taste delish and are a good alternative if traditional gels upset your stomach. All flavors are vegan and gluten-free.

Muir products caught my eye while restocking my energy gel stash and I'm glad they did. I'd not heard of them and figured I'd give them a try. As usual, I bought 10 to get the discount, which turned out to be a good thing as I got a mix of flavors and types. Yes, not only do they have a variety of flavors, they also have two types of gels for your activities, so pay attention when you pick them up. The fast burn is the quick energy you're used to in energy gels, but Muir also offers slow burn for the longer activities. I found each flavor to be very tasty and will be back for more.

I ran the Encinitas CA Half Marathon and Muir Energy was the course sponsor. I was really nervous because I was not able to train with the product prior to the race. My mantra is "Nothing New on race day" But I was worried about bonking and felt some calories was better than none. From the moment I opened the packet and it touched my tongue I was shocked at how amazing it was. My taste buds woke up and the salty Cocoa Almond pouch was gone! I couldn't wait to get to the next aide station. My friend that was next to me did not like it, so I finished off hers Vanilla Cashew .. yum! I brought one of these with me on a 90 mile ride. It saved my butt as I was close to bonking at mile 82. I bought it on a whim (and was honestly a little taken aback at the high price), but will definitely buy again. I always have a hard time offering a fair review on the flavor, as pretty much anything would taste good to me if I'm in bonk-mode. But - this did taste good! It was a thicker texture, but was satisfying. I usually use Hammer Gels or Gu. This was a nice change. Highly recommended.

Feed your body well :)
2 May 2023

The Muir Energy gels are always a great choice. They are sustainable, natural, organic, and filling — I have run the last three of my five half marathons with them, and I am planning to use them for the full marathon in November. I have tried almost every flavor and the fruit ones are best for a quick burst, while the cashew / nut butter ones are better for sustained fuel. It feels good to know that you are feeding your body well!!

Finally, Something Natural & Healthy
7 January 2022

This is not a regular gel - don't expect a sugar-filled, cake flavored high fructose bomb. This is a mixture of healthy ingredients that's similar to a standard gel, but a little thicker. If you're looking for a healthy alternative to a nutritionally devoid "energy" gel - this is the move. If you're conditioned to eat sweets and suck down regular gels, this will probably not be to your taste, just like if you were asked to eat fruit after eating chocolate protein bars for years. I love these out on the trail. They're perfect before a big climb or when I need a boost for those last few miles home.

Something different..

I was dubious whn I tore this open. The inside of the packet looked very dark and sticky but was I squeezed it back the contents were surprisingly delicious. You can taste the fruit (strawberry in my case) and the black mollases and a hint of salt.I did feel this gave me a pick me up and I prefer to take on board as natural as possible, intrigued to try the other flavours.

The natural energy you need
26 February 2022

The energy you need without all the artificial garbage of other gel shots. I started taking these little gel shots before my weekly hike and I can finally keep up with my super hiker mates! They give me that extra little "oomf" I needed. They taste great and don't get stuck in your teeth like other gels.

The texture/flavor combo is not good
16 October 2019

I tried to eat the vanilla cashew flavor during a half marathon I did this summer, and thought nothing of trying a new brand since I eat Gu and Clif products often for races & hiking. This was very thick and hard to swallow, and I found the texture off-putting (kind-of gritty). In combination with the texture, the flavor was so unpleasant that I almost threw up while I was running the race! I couldn't even finish it with my water. I put it back into my pocket and threw it away at an aid station! Just awful! I tossed the other flavor I bought, and will probably not buy more or try any other flavors.

yummy, nutritious whole foods-based gel
25 April 2021

This is the gel I've been waiting for. The taste is way more interesting than the traditional hyper-processed gels that are abundant at sports stores. And the best part? This is actually more nutritious than those other gels, likely due to the molasses. Just a quick glance at the nutrition labels: Muir has over 300mg of potassium (Clif is under 100mg), and Muir has a good chunk of your daily value for vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese (Clif has ZERO). Muir has all of this and none of the "tapioca syrup, maltodextrin, sunflower oil, carnauba wax" in Clif's products. This gel may not be for you if you are the kind of person that cannot tolerate natural peanut butter (the kind that you have to stir and can have an inconsistent texture), and would ... MoreThis is the gel I've been waiting for. A truly whole-foods based product won't give you the "McDonalds hamburger tastes the same in all 50 states" experience.
