These dig toys are always fun for kids and they have the bonus of being educational. It comes with a little brochure of the sharks to learn about them. I will say they could have fit more than 2 sharks in the block, or made the sharks a little larger. We found them early on and there was a huge chunk that we didn’t even have to dig into because we found them all. Still a fun activity that we will continue to purchase!

2 plastic sharks are hidden in a painted clay brick. Armed with just a tiny plastic excavation tool the game becomes a how long can your child focus on a tedious task before the sharks are discovered? Great tip: to make it go faster, you can soak the clay brick under water for about 15 seconds. The clay becomes wet and the tool slices better. My 9 year old went into the tool box and got a flat head screw driver. He had more fun decimating the clay brick after he found the sharks than the discovery of the sharks themselves. There's a small pamphlet about sharks inside as well. I think if the sharks were a 3d puzzle and all the pieces had to be uncovered it might have lasted longer.

Awesome activity that keeps the kiddo entertained. My boys love the treasure hunt type toys and this one fits the bill. They actually played with this together without fighting which was a total bonus lol. They are already asking for another one. The image of the shark on the block is bright and pretty- cool looking- almost wanted to display it instead. My son thought that the tool was a little weak but we have other digging tools (spoons) that expedited the process (he is not patient). It took them about 15 min to destroy the thing but they were excited about it and that’s good enough for me :)

The National Geographic Shark Dig Kit has 2 shark figurines embedded in a sandy block. At first I thought two of my kids could participate because it says two shark figurines in really big text on the box, but in the lower corner of the box it does say a little smaller that it is one dig kit. Two of my kids tried it, my teenager lost interest after she started getting dirty, but my 9-year-old had a lot of fun! It did create quite a mess and probably would be better outside, but my 9-year-old daughter said she loved it and would want to do another one. Her only complaint was that the two shark figurines were touching each other and so there was a lot of the block that was not utilized or had nothing in it. She said she would have rather had them spread out so she had ... MoreThe National Geographic Shark Dig Kit has 2 shark figurines embedded in a sandy block. Her only complaint was that the two shark figurines were touching each other and so there was a lot of the block that was not utilized or had nothing in it. She said she would have rather had them spread out so she had more digging to do. I thought the colors and design of the outer block were really cute. We ended up adding water like the instructions advised if it was getting a little too hard to dig out. It did help and I would recommend doing that. All in all it was a fun activity, pretty quick and a little bit of cleanup, but a good rainy day activity.
My daughter had a blast using her National Geographic Shark Dig Kit. With this kit she was able to dig out two shark figurines, a hammerhead and a Great White, which she now keeps on her shelf. The brick was a little hard to dig into at first, but we poured a little bit of water on it. The water softened it up enough for her to dig out the figures. In addition to the easy to follow instructions, a shark learning guide is included, so my daughter can learn a little about the sharks she just excavated.
Nice set. I like that it’s a little different than the dinosaur ones in that there’s individual figures inside. But I do wish there was a cool shark tooth included or something like that. The tool it comes with it not good, which I why I took off a star. You really need something more substantial, like a flat tipped screwdriver and hammer, depending on the age of your kid. The little brush is useless and we used a paint brush instead.
National geographic short dig kit is a stem toy. The kid includes one dig brick two shark figurines and one dig tool. Instructions in the learning guide are very crystal clear and easy to understand. It's actually very fun for all ages of children my three year old actually enjoyed digging for sharks. It is hours of fun and definitely would recommend for children. The price is really reasonable so it is definitely a plus.
This was a neat kit that my kiddos had fun with. It did take at least 30 minutes for them to fully unearth both sharks. They started to get frustrated around maybe 10 minutes in because it was taking a while to find a shark, but they were reinvigorated and really into the dig once they caught that first glimpse of a shark. The kit suggests doing the dig outside, if you are able. We did ours inside in a tray, but I really do agree that outside would probably be best. In their excitement, some of the sand/dirt stuff got flung out of the tray. The instructions say you can add water to help soften the brick so it's a little easier to dig through. We wound up adding a little bit of water a few times. The kit comes with one tool that has a brush on one side and a sand ... MoreThis was a neat kit that my kiddos had fun with. We wound up adding a little bit of water a few times. The kit comes with one tool that has a brush on one side and a sand comber on the other side. Since both kiddos wanted a go, I wound up pulling out a spare little paint brush and one of the tools we'd gotten in a sand castle kit that had pretty much the exact same shape. I think my 8-year-old liked that his tools had a longer handle than the one that came with the kit.The kit also has an information sheet so you can learn about the sharks you dig up.The brick could be a bit hard. Like I mentioned earlier, the instructions said you could add water to help soften things. My husband did get in to help do some heavier digging when our 6-year-old was getting upset the shark was hiding too well. The instructions warn that you have to carefully dig out your shark. It seems you could accidentally break your shark if you try to yank it out. We did not test the durability of the sharks. We did test the patience of our children, but they didn't want to hurt the sharks, so it wasn't too bad.I'm not sure if the sharks are in random locations in each kit. Ours were really close to one another. The kit is for 8 and up, according to the box, but our 6-year-old wanted to try it out, too. Patience might be the thing you'll have to consider when wondering if this is something your kiddos will enjoy."It was hard work but fun." My 8-year-old's review.
This Shark dig kit is a lot like many of these other Nat. Geo. STEM dig kits. The tool they give you is comically undersized even for a kid, while it does a decent job for the finer detail work and brushing dust away, it definitely does not help you get into the thing and really dig out the larger chunks. My son, 11, asked after only a few minutes if he could use a different tool, I let him use a flat head screwdriver which seemed to do a lot better at excavating away the larger sections near the edge. I think of a real excavation they don't start with small trowels and a dust pan, you start with a larger shovel, or actual equipment, and then work your way down to the smaller hand tools. In this case it makes sense to do it that way too. I wasn't keeping the time, ... MoreThis Shark dig kit is a lot like many of these other Nat. Geo. STEM dig kits. In this case it makes sense to do it that way too. I wasn't keeping the time, but I'd guess maybe 30+ minutes for my son to get through and extract the two small shark prizes. They are detailed well enough but were kind of underwhelming to us. The mess required a vacuum and wet wipes as well as washing of hands and cleaning off the prizes. All in all fun enough, but the experience could probably be improved.
The National Geographic Shark Dig Kit was a short-lived enjoyment for my 9 year old. Perhaps he was too old to enjoy it, but he found the small plastic tool to be a bit small and he couldn’t get much leverage to actually “dig”. We’ve had other dig kits which use a small hammer to help dig and those seem to work a bit better (at least conceptually). The directions do mention using a bit of water to soften if needed. He was able to find a small shark after a bit of digging and quickly had that one excavated. He then got bored and asked if he could do a “slam” to break the brick up and expedite the second. After that it was a quick sweep to clean up the powder. Definitely recommend doing this outside as it does get a bit messy.
