However, if you have a higher-end system with multiple zones, this will not despite the misleading description stating that it will. Disappointed - I returned it

I had high hopes that this would be a step up from my programmable thermostat (which I've had for 15+ years and love). However, I don't like the fact that it thinks it's smarter than I am. Maybe it is smarter, but it doesn't obey my instructions.I like to be able to program it for the times I know we'll be home or gone, or for certain times, but also to change it manually when I want. This unit has a learning feature where it takes note of what you set the thermostat at during different times of the day, then uses that pattern to program it. The problem is that I want to lower the temperature at night, for example an hour after I go to bed, not right when I go to bed (I'm not the last one to go to bed). This unit has a learning feature where it takes note of what you set the thermostat at during different times of the day, then uses that pattern to program it. The problem is that I want to lower the temperature at night, for example an hour after I go to bed, not right when I go to bed (I'm not the last one to go to bed). Or at times I want the house warmer or cooler than usual. The thermostat can't understand that.I did figure out how to program it to my schedule, and supposedly that removed the learning feature, but it still continued to change the temperature to what it thought it should be, not what I had programmed it for. I got tired of having to go in the change the program back to what I want over and over. The other thing I don't like is that you can't see the ambient temperature if it's close to (or the same as) the set temperature. For example, if the room is 76 degrees and the temp is set at 77, it won't show you the room temperature. You have to move the dial around to 78 or 79 before you can see the room temperature, then turn it back to the temp you want.Third, the temperature range that it turns the unit on and off is too wide. For example, if you set it at 77, it lets it get to 78 (which feels too warm) before it will kick on, and when it does, it runs for a long time and takes it down to 76 (which feels too cold). My regular programmable thermostat would keep it in the 77-degree range, so more constant. My son thought it was cool and was disappointed that I returned it, but for the price I could see no advantage at all to keeping it. I preferred my simple programmable thermostat that kept my program and that I could see the room temperature and that kept the house at a more constant temperature.

I have a simple heat system and I need to be able to determine if the heat is functioning when I am not home for many days or longer. This is one of the few I could find which will fill that need. I installed it in 30 minutes with complete ease and have had it running for two weeks or more without any issues. Make sure to read the Google Nest compatibility guide or check out U Tube for videos to make sure the Nest "E" meets your need and is a suitable solution for a change out. There are something like 3 generations of Nest Thermostats. Last point - there is a charging port on the back. Charge it for a few hours before attaching it. This ensures the battery is completely charged. If it is low on charge, it might not energize and it appears you have a problem. Excellent product when on sale. Google recently came out with lower price version of Nest, but I purchased this combo on sale which includes one remote sensor.Nest-E was compatible with my simple single-stage Aquatherm hydronic/freon hybrid system (using "gas forced air" setting for heat). My system does not have c-wire which is used to power the Nest-E, but was not a problem because Nest-E will "borrow" power from the other Y-G-W-R wires to recharge its own battery. This method does not work with all systems so you need to check compatibility on Nest site and then try it out; it still may not work, but its worth a try. This method does not work with all systems so you need to check compatibility on Nest site and then try it out; it still may not work, but its worth a try. If you get an error message during setup about not having enough power, you can try charging the internal battery first via its micro-usb port from a common 1 amp or higher USB power cube.Nest-E was easy to setup; menu and app basically walks you through the process step-by-step. Remote sensor works great to control the temperature of a specific room, e.g., bedroom, instead of being driven by the thermostat which is usually in a hallway.Controls/Options are fairly basic with a few extra features, but more than adequate for my needs. Due to my changing schedules, I manually control the temperature and not use the auto-schedule nor their learning features.Display shows large, easy-tread soft pastel-color digits; option to turn on when you walk by is cool and convenient. Selecting options is convenient and easily done by rotating outer ring and pressing in to Enter - a nice alternative to the typical clicking different buttons.Display: Only minor complaint is lack of info on interpreting the display. The large center digits is the selectable desired temperature (opposite of Honeywell which shows the current room temperature). The actual room temperature (at the thermostat or chosen sensor) is the smaller number and is accompanied with a small analog "clock-like hand" which rotates around like a clock. When the "hand" is in 12noon position, that is 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The "hand" rotates clockwise when increasing and counter-clockwise when decreasing and then just disappears when it reaches the desired temperature (since current equals desire - makes sense (but why not just add info to user manual? :-).Nest App is also fairly basic, mirrors the thermostat hardware, but straightforward to use for setup, mode selection (cool, heat, cool+heat, fan only, off), and adjusting desired temperatures. You can assign location and name of each device.Nest App forces you to sign into your Google account and gives you the option to also use the Google Home app, useful if you have any other Google smart devices, e.g., lights, alarms, etc.Competitive products (Honeywell, Ecobee, Emerson, etc.) all seem good too, but smart thermostats plus sensor usually cost over $200 and Best Buy had a sale for $130 with one sensor which makes this an excellent value. Note that all smart thermostats require the c-wire for power from your HVAC system, with the possible exception if the thermostat contains a provision for a battery, e.g., AA batteries.Overall, very happy with the Nest-E plus Sensor so far. YMMV because there is a large number of legacy HVAC systems and not all smart thermostats are compatible so be prepared to troubleshoot if setup does not go easily. My one Google phone support phone call was excellent: quick to answer, personable, patient, helpful suggestions, escalation to 2nd level if need.)

Simple, Effective, Powerful

I've been thinking of purchasing a smart thermostat for years, but was wary of the installation and power needs. After doing more research and discovering my HVAC wiring included the all-too-necessary common, or "C" wire, I began my search in earnest for a new thermostat. I've long admired the Nest line of products for their simplicity and smarts, but wasn't interested in purchasing the top of the line Nest thermostat for my small apartment. The Nest Thermostat E offered all the smarts in a more affordable package, and the rebates available from my local utility company brought the price down significantly. The Nest Thermostat E offered all the smarts in a more affordable package, and the rebates available from my local utility company brought the price down significantly. Don't forget to check for rebates!Installation was a cinch, with easy to follow directions. Setup with the Nest iPhone app and the Google Home app were both seamless. Again, having a C wire present simplifies things, and while Nest thermostats don't technically require the C wire, I recommend doing your research first to make sure you're comfortable with the installation and any potential issues that might arise. For reference, I have a newer, "base" model gas forced air furnace and AC system.Using the Nest thermostat itself is as simple as turning a dial, which makes it easy for anyone to adjust. I like that the Nest displays the current temperature and system status when you walk by, although with my thermostat located in the living room it is constantly turning the display on (you can switch this behavior off, however). The real reason for my purchase of a Nest, however, was to integrate it into my smart home setup, which has worked very well. The Nest is controllable within both Google Home and Alexa setups, with the most full-featured control coming from Google Home/Google Assistant. The Nest app itself provides full control of the thermostat from your phone, tablet and even a web browser. My only gripe here is that Nest is not compatible with Apple's Siri/HomeKit, although third-party integrations are available for this.Ironically, Nest's headline feature - that the thermostat learns from your behaviors to create a schedule - is nearly useless for me during the pandemic, as I am working from home and prefer a constant temperature day and night. When I decided to spend the summer away from home helping family, however, the Nest really proved its worth, as I was able to remotely monitor temperature and humidity levels throughout a hot Texas summer and make adjustments to save energy and/or control humidity levels as needed.Honestly, having voice control of my thermostat with Google (or Alexa) is my favorite feature. I can easily set Routines up that adjust the temperature or set the Nest to Eco Mode when I leave to run errands etc., and adjusting the temperature from bed with my voice is delightful (albeit peak lazy). Voice control works most naturally with the Google Assistant, which makes sense as this is a Google-owned company, but basic voice commands are possible with Alexa as well.Overall I'm extremely pleased with the Nest thermostat. My only quibbles are the lack of native Siri/HomeKit support and the price/features of the remote temperature sensors (for the price, I wish the remote sensors automatically sensed your presence rather than requiring you to set time frames for using a sensor's readings rather than the main thermostat.

So far, so good and no C wire issues
11 December 2021

This seems to be the one Nest thermostat that doesn't have the C wire issue like the previous one I bought had. I have an older heating system (35 years old) that doesn't have a common wire. I tried the Google Nest power connector to simulate a C wire and I couldn't get it to work. So back it went. I was thinking of using Google's recommended HVAC company, but after talking to my normal HVAC guy he mentioned that Nest had a later generation thermostat that didn't require a C wire. I googled smart thermostats that don't have the C wire issue; found this one on a blog and Walmart had the cheapest price on it. Works much better and no C wire issues like on the previous one. The overall fit and finish on this one is superior to the older cheaper one I bought from my gas company. As is so often the case, it pays to spend a little more money to get the product that works right.

The whole installation took about an hour from opening the box to finishing. The heatlink is on the wall where the old thermostat was and the Nest thermostat is wherever you want it but must be plugged into a socket. The heatlink is powered by 2 AA batteries. The app is easy to use, there is a weekly schedule you can set up, you can set the heating to different temps at 15 minute intervals in a 24 hour period and you can have as many of these events as you wish. The events are easy to delete, add or change, you slide the dots along to change the time or up and down for the temp. Alternatively, you can just set the heating to whatever temp, or off, but there is a frost protection. The best thing about it for us, is that you can control the heating from anywhere using the app. The only negative is that when you go out, the app can take a while to detect you have left but we just open the app and change ‘Home’ to ‘Away’. The temp then drops to whatever Eco-temp you have it set at. When you get home, the app detects your phone has connected to your wifi and then sets it to Home and reverts to whatever home temp you have set. You can also adjust the temp by turning the thermostat casing and there is a button on the heatlink which is a simple on or off button, in case the wifi goes off. We have the Nest app on 2 phones and have just signed in using the same account. We are very happy with this kit. Would recommend.
