I've put hundreds of miles on versions 10 and 11 of the 1080, and I can say that version 12 is the better of the three by a considerable margin. Most of it has to do with getting rid of the god-awful "UltraHeel" but there are other subtle improvements that take the 12 to the next level.First, the Fresh Foam tuning. This is still your long haul, easy miles daily cruiser, but the compound in the 12 is slightly (really, just slightly) firmer, slightly bouncier than previous versions. I've found myself enjoying the ride far more than I expected. The Fresh Foam here is dense, substantial, and it feels durable.Second, there as been a slight improvement on the lockdown across the midfoot, which I was not expecting but it feels welcome. In versions 10 and 11, I remember often feeling like the the top and sides of my foot were irritated by the rigid structure that surrounded the midfoot cage--not quite Ultraboost midfoot cage territory, but still enough to notice. Now, I feel very well locked down without any sort of obvious bunching, pinching, or other unpleasantness. I think some of this has to do with a better heel lockdown; I'm simply not cranking the laces like I felt I had to before. But the rest of the upper has improved, too, which is commendable. Finally, the shoe just *looks* better. I love the design of this version, and it makes me want to reach for it more. The weird veiny vibe of 10 and 11 is gone, and I couldn't be happier about that.Overall, what a shoe, and what an improvement! I'm so excited to spend the summer cruising in the 1080v12.

I do by far the most of my running on rural trails in my Brooks Cascadia 16, in which I have covered 1000km (with no sign of any wear). I run in the 1080v12 on a fully tarmac trail which is a shared pedestrian and cycle track. I also use them to walk into town and can road run that when I get bored with walking. The 1080v12 are incredibly comfortable. They feel very similar to my Cascadia 16 in cushioning, fit and response. They feel exactly the same to me and both give my 2E feet plenty of room in the toe box.Another thing I love about the 1080v12 is that they are comfortable and practical for cycling (with rubber faced pedals). They give me the confidence that if my bike were to fail on my regular 26km circuit, I would never be further than 13km from home and could run that. The upper is beautifully flexible and is perfect in my running socks or laced looser with a thicker pair on top for cycling when the temperature is close to freezing. For actual running on tarmac and concrete, the 1080v12 are perfectly cushioned and feel responsive to me. I am a mid foot striker and I find that the 8mm drop does not get in the way. It is better than my Glycerins in that aspect but still naturally allows a heel contact when running downhill. As for response, you may laugh if you want but “faster” for me means doing 5k in just under 30 minutes plus 1.5k warmup and cooldown either side, so an 8k run. I can do it in the 1080v12 (sometimes) but they are also comfortable on a more relaxed 5k or easing along a 10k in 80 minutes. The grip is secure wet and dry and even on fallen leaves on the tarmac. If you are mulling over whether or not to buy the 1080v12, I recommend going for it before they become available only in tiny or enormous sizes.

I went into the NB store to try it on, and the 10.5 was noticeably too big, and the 10 felt slightly snug compared the the V9 and v11. On runs, they lacked the feeling of softness and light cushioning, and instead felt more rigid and stiff. Even after a few runs, my legs and feet felt noticeably worse. Needed a wider, soft shoe.

I have a Morton's Neuroma in the right foot and any shoe with enough tightness in the mid or forefoot will cause pain and tingling. I usually wear Keens and recently have been through 3-4 pairs of Speedgoat 4s from Hoka. The speedgoat 5 is tighter in the forefoot. I didn't like the placement of the arch in the Speedgoat 4 (it was too posterior) but tolerable. So this time I looked for something new.The NB Fresh Foam is working out pretty good. The Speedgoats would be sized 2E (wide), but with the NBs I went with regular D. I can't feel the arch, so it's either placed well or insignificant. In the store there was no tightness, but when I wore them for 30+ minutes I noticed some tingling and discomfort in the right foot. So what I did is cut out the side elastic material that is connected to the tongue. On either side of the shoe tongue there is elastic material that holds it in place and envelopes your midfoot. It's not tight, but it was enough to start to irritate my neuroma. Once I cut it out the shoe has been about perfect. I left the elastic in the left shoe and no problem.

Not the 1080 I loved

I'm not a runner or professional athlete, but I know what works for me. I've been wearing New Balance shoes forever. Over the last 5-6 years the 1080's were the best for me.I have a high instep and vey wide ball and wear a men's 10 4E with custom orthotics. I could always count on the 1080v5-v9 to fit. I didn't care for the recent high rubber pull or "tongue" or whatever it's called, at the heal. So I avoided them and was able to find earlier models when I needed them.Unfortunately, I can no longer find them but they added padding to that area with the V12, so I decided to try them.No local store, even the Factory stores, had them in my size. Reading about them online many said they run big, I started a chat with a NB rep who advised they did and I should get ½ size smaller. She also indicated that the 680 like the 1080, was a neutral shoe and might be a good choice for me. So I ordered the 1080 V12 in 9.5 4E from NB online. The fatal question I didn't ask, was about the height & width. width, thinking 4E meant 4E.When I got them and compared them to my current V8's, there is a major difference in width. I attempted to stuff my feet into them and found, indeed, they were the right length. However, the width and height missed horribly. I immediately returned them to a local Factory store for a refund. They must have changed the last when they started with the redesigned heal. It's not the same shoe I have loved for years. Maybe they should bring back a "1080 Classic" or just go back to the old last.I needed new shoes, so I had to do something. And I really wanted the "Eclipse with vibrant orange and spring tide" color. So I decided to try my regular size. They are definitely narrower, longer, and shorter on my instep, but are wearable. I'm sure they will break in eventually.Next time I go to a NB store, I'll check out the 680 the NB rep told me about to see if it's the shoe I have to go to until NB changes the 1080 back to something more fitting for my feet.

The Perfect Shoe for Plantar Fasciitis Sufferers
7 August 2022

As an event DJ I stand a lot. As a result, I've developed painful plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the heal and arch of the foot. Along with a fatigue mat I've tried wearing different running shoes to help cushion my foot, but, unfortunately, I was still experiencing pain. However, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v12 was a game changer for me. This shoe feels like I'm walking on air! My foot gets the cushion it needs and my feet don't feel fatigued after standing for several hours. I also bought shoes with the wide toe box so my foot doesn't feel cramped. This is an extremely comfortable and well made running shoe. I'm definitely going to purchase a second pair! These shoes rock!

Very Good But Not Great

I got the Fresh Foam X 1080v12 as a daily trainer but, to me, it's more of an easy or recovery day kind of shoe. I normally wear 8 and sometimes 8.5 so I ordered 8 EE and it was way too big when I tried it on. So I returned it and ordered 7.5 EE and it's still on the roomy side. NB's idea of "wide" seems to differ from other brands' shoes. Normally, the standard size works fine for me as my width is probably "medium", not "narrow" or "wide". Anyway, I've already put in 20 miles on 1080v12 so I'm keeping it but I've decided that I will put it away for now and use it in the winter with thicker socks. The 1080v12 has good cushioning but isn't quite as soft as I expected, which isn't good or bad, just not what I thought I was getting. It is firmer than I thought it'd be and has a decent energy return and pop. It's fairly comfortable but is a lot of shoe and heavier than I'd like for a daily trainer or for tempo running. It doesn't make me want to go fast. At the same time, it's not as soft-cushioned as other shoes that I'd consider for easy/recovery running. It sits somewhere in between and I'm not sure what to make of that.Overall, I enjoyed the several 6~7 mile runs I've had with the 1080v12 but it's a little too roomy with my summer socks and feels a bit clunky for faster running. I'm in SoCal and the ongoing 100+ degree heatwave has made me adjust my running schedule and the types of run I make and this shoe just does not fit in right now. Although this may seem like a less-than-positive review, I think it's a very good pair of running shoes. 20 miles isn't enough to make a final judgment and I think I will enjoy the 1080v12 in cooler weather and grow to like it more as time goes by and I rack up more miles.

I ordered online and went with every recommendation and review I saw about it running large and best to go half size down at least. I'm usually US 10 but ordered 9.5 based on all of those other internet reviews including on the official New Balance website and now I'm taking them back after trying on to request to exchange for a US 10. I purchased a pair of these yesterday. I got in a 5k that same day, right out of the box, and a 5k today. Here are my thoughts. Obviously I am very impressed with the Out Of The Box, feel. The Upper is absolutely amazing. I was very concerned after seeing the fit on several reviews on YouTube. I bought my regular size that I have in other brands, with no issue. Right out of the box the midsole foam seemed firm, in comparison to what I have been wearing lately. I say that but the transition is extremely smooth, and with the excellent fit of the upper, it just feels like a package. After taking them out this morning for another 5k, they seemed to be softer. v12 A Step Backwards

Last year's 1080v11's were like walking on clouds. Very responsive and soft underfoot. They were truly a phenomenal experience and the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. I wore them for every day wear, not running. However, this year NB decided to stiffen them. I thought maybe the ones I got in the mail were defective, however, I tried on another pair in store and they were the same. An associate in the store (and youtube videos online) confirmed that this year's model was a little more firm. The only logical reasoning for this is maybe they are slightly better for the serious runner as far as support. I would be willing to bet a majority of people buying these are getting them for the comfort and walking. Sorely disappointed. I ended up buying a competitive pair.
