860v14 2E Has it’s flaws
27 September 2024S

originally posted on runningroom.com

The foam sole needs a firmer support layer (below the foam). The foam is so spongy that your foot can rock from side to side as you walk (not a matter of shoe fit). This could lead to injury or joint pain from improper alignment. The 2E version of the show tapers too much at the toe to be comfortable for those of us that require a wide toe-bed. The side of the shoe right below the ankle bone doesn’t come high enough to give proper support/stability.The tread of the shoe is similar to my previous 840v4 2E but thinner and softer. So the treads will wear out even faster than my old shoes.All-in-all the shoe isn’t all that bad for someone with a narrower toe but without a more durable tread and ergonomic support layer, I can’t say the shoe is going to work well.

So far the the v13 is a disappointment. I have been in the 860s for years. Bought the v13 recently to replace the v12 model that had great fit, comfort and durability. Sizing has been spot on across many model years until now. The v13 size 14D is different. It feel like a size 15 almost as if the size is mislabeled. Noticeably longer. It is also roomier through the midfoot such that the eyelet strips are close to touching when I snug it up. Outer sole is very slippery on rainy pavement. I am hoping the outer sole will wear in a bit and get better grip.

These shoes are so comfortable and they make you wanna just walk or run anywhere. I came from the walking shoes from brooks and wanted to try new balance and the fresh foam. SO COMFY. I usually get a half size bigger for my toes to have room since I have a wide foot, but I actually think I would have been good with my true size. They fit true to your shoe size so watch out! I’m still comfy but I had to tighten the laces a lot more to get them to be snug. Also the laces are surrounded by a plastic piece so there’s no chance of them damaging the side wall from lacing up over time. Pretty solid design.

New Foam = less Stable than previous generations
25 February 2023

I've traditionally bought the 860's due to overpronation and the midsole has been pretty consistent for several generations (v9 to v12 at least). With the update in V13 a major change to lighter/less dense foam and less duel density under inside heel results in inadequate support resulting ankle and knee pain. Even wearing these as walking shoes (forget my long runs) results in sore knees. I think if the duel density was extend further under the heel they might still be lighter/softer than previous generation while still preventing overpronation.Cons - New foam is less supportive, less duel density under the heal, shoestrings are lower qualityPros - Lighter weight, softer cushion, attractive

Nice, comfy shoes. Better quality control needed
28 April 2024

These shoes are super comfortable and light. They are perfect as running or walking shoes. They do have a snug fit though. In adidas I usually wear normal size 11 but with these I had to get the 4E extra wide. Biggest disappointment is the lack of quality control. My shoes had what looks like glue on the seams. I did the best I could to get it off the shoe so I didn’t have to ship them back for an exchange because it’s a hassle. For $165 shoe New Balance needs to do better with quality control.

No longer a stability shoe that works for me
12 December 2022

I've been running in 860s for a while. At 200 lbs and vulnerable to calf and achilles injuries, I need a firmer stability shoe . The fresh foam on the V13 has made the midsole too soft and the medial post puts my feet in an over supinated position when I run. Luckily I was able to still purchase the 860V12 which is a perfect blend of cushioning and stability with a medial post that matches well with the midsole. With the Vongo already being a soft, plush, high stack running shoe, NB no longer has a traditional firm stability shoe in it's line-up. Not sure what options are left for those of us that really do need a firmer supportive shoe after the V12s sell out.On the positive side, the 860 V13 still has a great fit with a roomy toe box. If you like the fit of the V12 you wont be disappointed with that aspect of the shoe. Although if you liked the stability features of the 860 of old, you may be disappointed with this version.

Poor Construction
19 November 2022

I have to be honest, I'm very disappointed. As a huge fan of New Balance shoes, I wear them for work, running and casual.I bought the X 860 v13 for work, Black on black with a nice cushy sole and a good looking shoe in my opinion. However, after wearing them for only one shift, the toe cap failed with one large permanent crease. Due to its extremely thin construction, the cap overly flexes - while making popping noises with every toe bend, and ultimately creases into its current form. It's just not built robust enough. Now the crease rubs on the top of my toe and I'm just waiting for the next blister to appear. Had stronger toe cap been used, as seen in the Fresh Foam X 1080v12, this would have been a non-issue.This is always the challenge when shopping online, ... MoreI have to be honest, I'm very disappointed. Poor quality control!
6 March 2024

This was my second pair and they couldn’t be more different. What did you do to these shoes? My first pair were great - one of the best pair of sports shoes I ever owned. The newest pair are the worst shoes I have ever bought. Unfortunately, I bought these directly from New Balance my mail for a four month travel in Europe. After the first wearing my right heel is blistered and the big toe is red and throbbing with pain. Impossible to return as I won’t be home until June and I’m not going to drag these around Europe. Very disappointing in obviously extremely poor quality control.

Review of New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v13 - Mens Running Shoes
29 May 2024

I’ve worn Brooks for well over 10 years and I’ve been reluctant to try other shoes. I wear a US 13 4E, with orthotics and I need a shoe that provides stability. For context, I presently weigh 260 pounds, having lost around 77 pounds over the last 15 months, so my runners are very important to me in continuing my journey to get fitter. As I’ve transitioned from walking to running, my go-tos have been Brooks Beast or Adrenaline GTS. Anyway, without making a long story any longer, a lack of available stock at the time of a shoe changeover steered me to NB and initially the difference in stability took a couple of wears to adjust to, I’ve got to say that my feet, ankle and knee joints have never felt this good. I believe the cushioning is way better and by my calcs, I’m also about 5-6% faster. If I get more than 6 weeks out of my NBs (I do 12 kms a day, every day), I think I’ll be a true convert.
