The 990’s original designers were tasked with creating the single best running shoe on the market. The finished product more than lived up to its billing. When it hit shelves for the first time in 1982 the 990 sported an elegantly understated grey colorway, and a then unheard of three-figure price tag. For avid runners and ahead of the curve tastemakers alike, the 990 was a mark of quality and superior taste. There have been updates to the design since ’82, and more color options, but the 990’s aspirational status symbol aura has never changed. The latest generation model, the 990v6 features a streamlined take on the mesh paneling and suede overlay construction, plus FuelCell and ENCAP midsole technologies. The subtle, refined modernization offers an up-to-date pinnacle experience for the 990.

I have been wearing 990s for about 15 years now I think this V6 is the best looking version yet. As a 57 year old man who is overweight and has fallen arches, these are the most comfortable shoes I have found. In fact, I am retired and I wear these shoes almost exclusively. The toe box of the V6 is a little smaller than that of the V6 but they are still comfortable. I wear a 12 wide and the V6 has the room to accommodate my prescription orthotics. I cannot recommend these shoes enough. If you have foot issues and/or pain in hips and lower back, do yourself a favor and try them out. Oh, I almost forgot, New Balance includes an extra pair of laces in gray. They look great.

These are amazing as all 990s are. These have fantastic reflective hits, which I believe are the best ones yet. You can wear them all day to work and feel comfy and supported. This color is so classic it will look good with anything, dressed up or down. For sizing, I would suggest going half a size down from your normal size as it is long. It is also great that there are many width options for this sneaker. Excellent quality as always and as an added bonus it's cool that it's Made in the USA. Once you get your correct size and width in these, you'll be reaching for these all the time. Sneaker of the Year 10/10

The 990v6 has been divisive to long-time 990 fans. I personally love the new styling, which blends the more traditional 990 lifestyle vibe with a modern-day trainer aesthetic. What I love most about New Balance is the quality of their Made in USA line, this being the flagship shoe. I have a few other Made in USA models and the premium materials are very apparent on them, although with that, they are usually very sturdy and heavy shoes. These are lightweight and comfy. While there are nice materials (buttery-soft suede, 3M, etc.), these v6's don't seem to live up to the premium reputation of the 990 as much on first impression. I could be wrong and time will tell, but that was a little disappointing and I now understand the mixed feelings about v6 (being a departure ... MoreThe 990v6 has been divisive to long-time 990 fans. They do have ENCAP and FuelCell, which is nice. Unfortunately, I will have to exchange them as I found them to be a 1/2 size too large. There's also mixed information out there on this, so if you have the opportunity to try them on before you buy, you can save yourself the headache. I'm hopeful the Dick's exchange process goes smoothly, as I purchased these online.

I have been waiting on the V6 ever since I saw the photos last year. I was afraid they may be too squishy for me as I don't like too much cushion. They have some cushion but not too much that you sink into the shoe. They are perfect. I have had, at some point, all versions of the 990. I've had V1, V2, V3, V4, V5, 991, 992 and 993. The 993 has always been my favorite, by far, until now. These are the best shoes I've ever put on my feet. I'm willing to pay the premium price for Made in the USA. There are shoes far inferior to these that are just expensive. Considering the 990 cost $100, in 1982, it's surprising that these aren't more expensive than they are. I'm actually shocked they're not over $300. Worth every penny. For what it's worth I wear an 11.5 in the Made ... MoreI have been waiting on the V6 ever since I saw the photos last year. First off comes far from true to size way to big and roomy. Way over priced for a basic mesh suede shoe where ground feel including rubber sole feel is quite noticeable. Needs more stack to become comfortable especially for people with foot issues like neuropathy are diabetes's. I was overwhelmed by how uncomfortable they really were including less suede and less style than reviews made them out to be. How about make a shoe with longevity possibly like an upper mesh suede look like the 9060 with cushion like the Vongo are the fresh foam x v4 with a sole that will be all year around friendly with stability . Let's face it some people can not afford shoes every three months especially at prices at this price that will be wore down in a couple of months . Maybe one day there will be the ultimate shoe with a great combination of comfort with looks. It's a okay shoe I guess if you have no foot issues and you have money to spend but just not for me maybe others but lacking the right combo in my case . Don't want to bash new balance they have great shoes but very disappointed at least in this case...
The long awaited 990v6 didn't disappoint this buyer. My initial impression was that it is more streamlined and less chunky looking than it's v3, v4, and v5 predecessors. I slipped them on and the fit was spot on, took a few steps and they felt very comfortable, took a walk and I was sold. These are very nice shoes that look more modern, not like dad's shoes. I have worn them several times now for walking, light exercise, and for running errands around town. They are comfortable all day long from the beginning. I can't wait for additional color offerings to come out. Try a pair of v6's. They aren't just a remake/upgrade of their venerable predecessors. If you are looking for a state of the art running shoe to log mega miles, there are better, lighter choices. But, if you want a great looking lifestyle shoe then take a pair of the v6's for a test drive.
It's chunkier than the 990 v5, but I appreciate the sleeker modern design elements, and feel that folks will get used to it once the newness wears off and we see some other color ways and collabs. I am a size 11 in most all NB, but I purchased both the 11 and 11.5 and ended up sticking with the 11.5 for the v6. Now I wonder if that was a mistake. It's really comfortable with plenty of room in the toe box, but it looks a lot more substantial up front (wider maybe) which makes it a bit less easy to rock than a v5 or a 991. I find the 991 made in the UK's to be snug in the mid toe, and these are not at all. Materials are all high quality, but the v6 has more plastic than other versions, which some might find off-putting. I don't mind it, just noting it. Literally. After nerve damage resulting from a spinal issue, I thought I was condemned to go barefoot from then on. No shoe could make my right foot happy- I tried many that failed. A very sharp and experienced NB store salesperson listened to my history, and produced a 990 V5 that fits and wears like magic. I'm able to wear my 990s for 10-12 hours comfortably, working out and casual wear. I'm so happy with the 990 that I have the V5 in 4 colors, and the V6 is my 5th pair. The construction quality is superior to all my past athletic shoes, making the higher price an actual value. Now, if NB would produce the 990 Trail shoe that was scratched in the pandemic, THAT would be a beautiful thing. (BTW- Include 2E sizes.)
The fit was a huge problem for me. I come to New Balance because of the reputation of fit. It's very hard to find 14B at your company. A true fit was not what I received unfortunately. I have retired from the Army, but when I was Active Duty in the Army the PX exchange ordered my 13B and 14B running shoes from New Balance. The shoe always fit until now, it doesn't feel like a true fit. I would order different colors in this shoe if I was sure about the fit being narrow fit for sure. It's very important for me to have this type of shoe. The only dress shoe that works for me are Ferragamo made shoes, due to the narrow fit of the shoes. I hope and trust that New Balance doesn't fail me now. The 990v6, 990v3 in red, and 990v6 in black is what I seek from New Balance.
