Excellent hiking shoe. I walk 3 miles a day five days a week with these shoes. You become acclimated with the ground, and then you begin to become naturally part of the trail and you don’t want to stop walking. The grip is satisfying on the dirt trails. The shoes are robust, lightweight, and agile, which makes it a joy to go hiking. I purchased a second set of these shoes as they are gratifying in every way, and fit like a glove.This review applies to my experience with these shoes on dry and semi dry trails only.

I was a longtime New Balance customer then switched to Hoka about five years ago because they simply felt better for walking and running.Apparently Google has a long memory of my purchase history and has blasted my computer with constant ads to try this new sneaker. I took the bait and am happy I did. I really like these sneakers because they feel great on my feet and a was able to get them a little wider - just like I used to. It's nice to be wearing New Balance again.

I just have a few comments on the previous v7 version of this shoe. The 7 is very comfortable with great grip. The problem I have with it and the 8 is flexibility. Both are about the most flexible shoes available. For some that's a positive but for me that flexibility means sore toes. At 71 my toes are not as bendy as I would like. I can and do wear them casually but not for hiking.

This shoe is light weight. Has excellent grip, but for "off trail" I would disagree unless it meant a smooth dirt or compact stone path. This shoe does not offer enough support for a true hiking shoe. Any walking on a hiking trail you would risk twisting your ankle. This shoe for walking sidewalk or groomed trail is good.Seeing the sole on a show designed for winter would be good too. Seems it would be good on snow and ice.
Seems like NB went cheap with the materials on this newer model. The tongue is a thin stretchy flap of fabric that needs constant readjusting when putting on, and much of the upper shoe is a stretchy material that doesn't provide anywhere near the same structure previous models provided. The Hierro really went downhill with the v7 model and this v8 is even worse. Might as well put two sponges under your feet and wrap them with a thin layer of elastic fabric. Compared to the previous models, these feel like they could roll off your feet changing directions too quickly. If you were loyal to the Hierro based on the v5 - v7 models, you're better off seeking whatever sizes are left out there of the older models.
Love the new cushoning in these. I had a pair of the v7's and wore the heck out of them. I still find them to be a bit warm but to airy and you loose protection so it's understandable. My only concern is that the new lugs on the bottom are a bit small. Great for light trails but not as grippy as some may like for medium to more aggressive trails. I would assume a lot of people just where these as a heavier duty casual shoe, and the smaller lugs would be more comfortable in that scenario. Overall very happy with them and look forward to wearing these to death until the v9's.
I bought these shoes because I had the Hierro Goretex (2 years ago) and I LOVED them. I’ve done the Presidential Traverse (21 miles and Mount Washington NH) and the Pemi Loop (31 miles) Thought these would be a no brainer. Unfortunately they’re not near the same quality to the previous model. The mesh to the shoe is super soft which does make it breathable, but it sacrifices other qualities for trail runners. I highly wouldn’t recommend these for mountain type of trail running. Just your local town forest! My issue with these is with the soft mesh and tongue. It caused uncomfortable pressure underneath both angle bones. It was painful on my descends creating minor bruising. Additionally, because of how soft these are, you feel every single rock. One wrong step and you’ll wind up with a bruised foot.Then there’s the tongue. I find it difficult to fathom that whoever designed this tongue has ever run a trail before. Why would NB forgo a gusseted tongue? By the end of the second or third mile, the tongue drifts all the way to the outside of the shoe, allowing all kinds of debris inside. I wore these for a 20-mile training run recently and took on what felt like a pound of dirt and brush by the end.The laces come untied easily and are weirdly long even after doubling them back for a runner’s knot. This is likely affected by the tongue drifting around, causing the tension in the laces to slacken.Overall, for the price asked for these shoes, I wish I could get my money back. I ran in the V7 GTXs and those shoes - while not perfect - were outstanding by comparison. I at least wasn’t worried about spraining or breaking my ankle when pivoting hard or taking a sharp turn. I have to come to a near-stop to take hard turns because of how unstable this shoe is. NB rocks for those of us with exceptionally wide feet. I hope they have a more capable shoe in the works because this shoe isn’t it.
These are the best trail runners I could find. No other brands fit my feet. I Still was still wearing an old pair of New Balance Leadville V3s. I just did not think any trail shoe with foam in the name would be durable. My 11 4Es fit prefect. The laces stay tied. The cushioning is excellent. They dry fast. The sole has excellent grip to manage the rocks and roots found on the AT here near Franklin, NC. The outer heel is experiencing a bit of wear. I will not wear them anymore on the asphalt or concrete. Trail running and hiking only.
