The 990’s original designers were tasked with creating the single best running shoe on the market. The finished product more than lived up to its billing. When it hit shelves for the first time in 1982 the 990 sported an elegantly understated grey colorway, and a then unheard of three-figure price tag. For avid runners and ahead of the curve tastemakers alike, the 990 was a mark of quality and superior taste. There have been updates to the design since ’82, and more color options, but the 990’s aspirational status symbol aura has never changed. The latest generation model, the 990v6 features a streamlined take on the mesh paneling and suede overlay construction, plus FuelCell and ENCAP midsole technologies. The subtle, refined modernization offers an up-to-date pinnacle experience for the 990.

Absolutely ruined a great shoe

Well, I finally gave these a try despite the negative reviews and the fact that I did not like how they looked. They absolutely ruined this wonderful shoe. I have worn the v4 and v5 for years now. The Fuel Cell makes the shoe very "squishy" and unsupportive. If you like Hokas or any of the other fluffy running shoes, you may like these. If you loved the 990v4 or v5, you will hate these. After wearing them around my house a few minutes, I felt very unsteady, and all my joints started hurting. Had to return. Guess I will keep rotating my many pairs of v4's and v5's until they fall apart.

As a speed-walker, I am very pleased with the comfort and quality of the NB USA Made 990's. My 990v5's lasted 3-3 1/2 yrs., but are now showing supination sole wear, so it was time to replace. Even though there were several negative reviews on this site, my husband convinced me to try a pr. of v6's since he loves his. For reference: I'm 74 and walk 3-4 miles pretty much every day on mostly asphalt-paved community greenway trails, plus I would wear the v5's on most of my trouser/jeans wearing outings since they were both comfortable and fashionable. My v5's were too large as I ordered the same size as my recent runners. So before ordering the v6's I used the NB Printable Measuring Tool (as my husband had). It showed I needed a shorter but wider shoe. The wider width gently accommodates my bunions and the shoes fit comfortably. The v6's have been restyled, but feel very much like the v5's. They both have good arch support, good cushioning, a wide toe box and neutral support. I'm not sure what the FuelCell midsole cushioning feels like, but it's nice to have new technology. Both are a bit bulky looking, but bulky athletic shoes are very fashionable right now.The only negative is that these v6's do not have the US flag emblem on the heel of the shoe, (but that's probably an inventory issue)..

Disappointed with v6.

I think it's time for me to find a different go to for shoes. The last four pairs of shoes have been disappointments. Most recently, I purchased two pair of the v6 (one black and one gray; x-wide and sized down per the website), but they are not as comfy as they used to be. I have a heel spur in one foot and in previous versions (v5, v4, v3) there was enough padding that I couldn't feel it when walking, but I can in the v6s. It's not good. Even with different insoles, I can still feel the heel spur when I walk in the v6s (can't feel it as much in the v5/4 and can't feel it at all in the v4/v3. Also, the v6 feels flimsier--there's no padding on the upper parts of the shoe (including the tongue) and they don't fit as well. Disappointing.
26 August 2024

I currently am wearing v6 to work. I also have two prior versions that I wear—v4 or v5 as alternates and v4 or v3 for yard work. Something has changed with v6 where it feels like the sole is super thin. I have a heel spur in one foot and I can feel the ground more in the v6 compared to the worn out prior versions which is disappointing. There is also way less padding in the parts of the shoe that wrap around the top of the foot (tongue too) which makes the shoe feel flimsy. I wish they’d go back to v3 or v4. V6 is just not the same level of quality I expect from new balance. I’m super sad because I bought two pairs of v6 and am stuck with them.

Fantastic Sneakers. Excellent Construction.
17 January 2024

Wow, just wow. Gorgeous sneakers and well made. I've been looking for the perfect sneaker for over a year now, as my old ones are worn. Most sneakers today are cheaply made and not as nice as my old ones. I purchased the New Balance 990 V6 Finish Line and I love them. They have a nice toe box, which most sneakers don't have anymore. The make is excellent on these... and being made in the USA was a bonus for me. They are worth every penny. I normally wear a size 7 sneaker and these fit just right. Finally, I have new sneakers. They came with extra gray laces, which I think look great. I highly recommend these very comfortable sneakers and they look classy. Great for running with an air cushion feel in the heel, good arches and a nice toe box.

Great support with New Balance 990’s shoes
27 November 2023

I am a daily walker . Ten or so years ago I had plantar fasciitis from wearing cheap shoes that offered no real support and could not walk without pain. My sports medicine doctor gave me a list of shoes to buy and New Balance 990 was on the list . So when I bought my first pair my feet immediately got better with the all around cushioned support ! Since then , that is the only sports shoe I buy . Must be almost on my 12th pair . Love them ! I live close by to a footwear etc store but I have had many shoes delivered to my non house. I like their service and point reward system.

I miss the v5s
22 May 2024

I have both the V5 & V6, and have worn them essentially every day for 1 year each. The V6 are definitely not as comfortable or nice looking... i've gone back to wearing my old worn out V5s. The tongue on the V6 is larger and the padding isn't as durable which results in it flattening out and pinching the top part of my foot. It is extremely uncomfortable to say the least. Because of this, I have to wear the laces very loose which reduces the support and makes them look messy. The heel cup height is much lower and the material is not as sturdy, which has made the v6's wear down much faster and lose almost all support on the back and sides. See my photos of the back of the shoe to compare. Makes your feet look fatter, longer, & flattened. The only new features I like in the V6 are the big N in white reflective material and the small strip of suede on the toebox at the big toe, because it may prevent my toe from poking a hole through the top. Mis-step in version update
23 December 2023

I bought these at my brick-n-mortar shoe store in Tucson. I've worn the 990s for ten years, cycling through the updated styles. Functionally, the tongue on the V6 is too narrow. (V4's was the best, much broader and it stayed in place without the lace-slit). There is a seam on the V6 tongue which is very uncomfortable when the shoes are worn for longer than just walking around in the store. Stylistically, why put white soles on outdoor shoes? There are plenty of white (and shiny silver) accents elsewhere on the shoe upper. A fully gray sole would be more appealing and show a whole lot less street dirt. I am wearing these because I hate returning items that I said were fine at the time of purchase, but I am not content.

Regret not buying this sooner!
4 November 2023

I'm recovering from Achilles tendonitis and I've been trying and returning all sorts of athletic wear in hopes of finding something that would work. I resisted trying these because...they're a bit (though not massively) heavier than some of the other brands I'd been wearing. Do I regret it! The minute I put these on the pain disappeared. It was the first time I remembered what it was like NOT to be in pain in a very long time. Yes, they're pricey. But if you need an athletic shoe that is going to protect your heel, keep your feet stable, and give you the necessary support you need while dealing with injuries, this one is worth investing in.

What has happened to the quality?
14 December 2023

I am so horribly disappointed in these shoes I don't even know where to begin. I have a pair of basically brand-new W990GL5 I bought in February of THIS YEAR, and there is already a hole in the toe mesh. I wear them maybe once a week around town shopping, as these were meant to be the "good" pair, and I figured I'd break them in gently while I finished burying the ancient ones.My other pair lasted 10 YEARS.They have been the only shoes to fit my poor feet and now I am bereft - what to do? At this price point, am I buying another pair and taking the chance it craps out in under a year with probably less than a good month's cumulative wear on it - and that's walking, not anything tougher?Holy smokes - you all need to fix this STAT.The money wasted makes me ill.
