It fit seamlessly into my Elantra EG's dashboard, blending in harmoniously with the car's aesthetic. The installation process was a breeze, thanks to the included suction mount and clear instructions. Upon powering up the dash cam, I was greeted by a user-friendly interface that made it easy to navigate the various settings and features. The high-resolution display provided a crystal-clear view of the road ahead, even in bright sunlight. The heart of the Nextbase iQ 4K lies in its exceptional video recording capabilities. Capturing footage in stunning 4K Ultra HD, it captured every detail of the road, from license plates and road signs to the subtle movements of pedestrians and vehicles. The 140-degree wide-angle lens ensured that no incident or detail would go unnoticed. Beyond its impressive video quality, the Nextbase iQ 4K boasts a plethora of advanced features that elevate it above the competition. The built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity allowed me to effortlessly transfer recorded footage to my smartphone or tablet, making it easy to share or store for future reference. The GPS tracking feature proved to be an invaluable asset, meticulously recording my location and speed alongside the video footage. This information could be crucial in the event of an accident or insurance claim, providing indisputable evidence of my whereabouts and driving behavior. The automatic incident detection feature added an extra layer of security, automatically initiating recording and saving footage in the event of a sudden impact or abrupt change in motion. This gave me peace of mind knowing that even if I was momentarily distracted, the dash cam would capture the critical moments. The voice control proved to be a game-changer, allowing me to operate the dash cam hands-free. With simple voice commands, I could start or stop recording, adjust settings, and even access playback, all without taking my eyes off the road. The parking mode transformed my Elantra EG into a vigilant sentinel, automatically activating recording when the car was parked and unattended. This provided an extra layer of protection against theft or vandalism, deterring potential culprits and capturing any suspicious activity. Throughout my experience with the Nextbase iQ 4K, I was consistently impressed by its ease of use and intuitive design. The menu system was straightforward, and the controls were easily accessible, even while driving. I highly recommend this dash cam to any driver seeking a comprehensive and reliable safety solution. Its exceptional video quality, advanced features, and user-friendly design have transformed it into a guardian angel, safeguarding my vehicle and providing peace of mind on every journey.

The night vision is quite impressive to say the least for a dashcam of this caliber and it doesn't give up much detail in the dead of night. The night vision is quite impressive to say the least for a dashcam of this caliber and it doesn't give up much detail in the dead of night. The quality of the design video and audio is second to none. The features in this dashcam are top tier and impressive to say the least. Firstly this dashcam is 4G enabled, that means that you can at any time access this dash camera without being in or near the car. The alerts are almost instantaneous to your smartphone and very easy to playback. I had my car in the shop for some work and was able to easily connect and check the dashcam playback and even live as they did work. Gives a bit of big brother vibes, I know, but making sure my car isn't going somewhere it shouldn't or (insert paranoid car owner horror story here) is important. The Smart Sense Parking works EXTREMELY well... I'd say possibly too well. Every time I got back in my car it triggered an alert of a Parking Event, even before I opened the door. Now, when away from your car, its amazing. When coming back to your car every single time getting a push notification can get a bit annoying but that is no fault of the product. You just know it works well.Let's talk about the main cons I have, the Protect Plus feature set as I mentioned is absolutely incredible however that feature set comes with a ~$200/Year (or $17 a month if you divide by 12) price tag. That is a steep investment in the subscription model for a dash cam. Granted, you are given a lot of features once you pay it. However, if you choose to go with the Free tier, expect that 90% of the features of this dashcam become locked out to you. When purchasing this unit it’s important to be sure to factor in the cost of that subscription as an operating cost along with the capital cost of the camera itself. For me the $200.00 subscription is worth the price tag for what you get, but if you are looking for a non-cloud-based product this may not be the product for you as it highly relies on the cloud to function along with the 4G connectivity, which again, is included in that subscription. Case Study… if you live in an area where car theft is rampant, wouldn’t it be great to open your phone and show the police a picture of the guy who stole your car, and a live video of him jamming out to Taylor Swift as he tries to get away with your vehicle including his GPS location? That scenario, although funny, is exactly where this product shines. Someone stealing your car may not think it’s a camera that is connected live to the cloud… furthermore, if they see that dashcam, they may think twice of taking it for a joyride. If you want the highest tech dashcam that is on the market today with AI technology, cloud-based replay, and a slew of other impressive features you can look no further than the iQ 4K. However, if you only want local recording (to an SD Card), and basic peace of mind when it comes to a Dash Cam, the Nextbase, may be a bit much for your liking because you are wasting 90% of the features if you don't want to subscribe to the additional feature set.

In addition to the "coming soon" features, a few aspects of the camera are frustrating especially for an ultra-premium device. Still, this is hands-down the best video quality of any dash camera that I've used or compared via online video platforms. The install experience for the Nextbase iQ was simply amazing. Nextbase includes a variety of power cables to allow you to connect to constant power via the fusebox or OBD connector in almost any kind of vehicle. You most likely will not need to tap another power wire to get constant power to this device - I just found a circuit that had constant power and pulled the fuse and plugged in the Nextbase adapter, which you then plug your fuse back into the adapter. The setup video you're directed to as soon as you scan the QR code in the box makes things super easy to understand as well.Video quality on my 4K unit is incredible. The video format is 3840x2160 at 30fps, stored using the HEVC codec. Videos seem to average around 150 MB per 30 second clip, which comes out to about 4 hours of video stored on the included 64GB microSD card before it rolls over and records over previous files. The fidelity of these videos is amazing - this is not a "fake" 4K dash cam by any stretch. For the first time with a dash cam I'm able to clearly read license plates for cars passing my vehicle in other lanes, even at high speed differentials. While stopped in a turn lane, you can pause frames and read the plates of vehicles passing at 40mph in the other lanes. It's almost GoPro level quality in that sense. It also does a very good job at night in low light. I was still able to read plates while driving down an unlit neighborhood street. Really amazing. The cabin facing camera is very good as well, and suitably wide angle that it can easily cover both front seats from pretty much any reasonable mounting position on your windshield.Feature wise, it’s a bit of a mixed bag with the Nextbase iQ. The included 4G connection is via the T-mobile network, so if you are in a poor T-mobile area then the benefits of the premium subscription are either frustrating or downright useless. Unfortunately, my home is in an area with abysmal T-mobile so it’s basically impossible to access the camera without removing the SD card. Even the Bluetooth connection you can make to your phone doesn’t seem to improve the connection speed for downloading videos. I’m quite frankly a little shocked that it doesn’t have wifi (at least, there’s no way to configure wifi via the Android app, although the feature is mentioned on the Nextbase site). On the bright side, when parked at work the connection is very fast so the SmartSense parking feature works very well and it’s very easy to play back videos when notified of a “parking event.” SmartSense only powers up and transmits recordings when it detects an event (even a proximity based one – not just G-force or motion) which helps both with your recording time on battery as well as the amount of storage space you’re using. Likewise, downloading clips when the camera is in a strong service area is quick and easy. The other two “smart” features of the iQ aren’t available yet as of Nov 2023 (Guardian mode and Roadwatch AI) so I can’t comment on those. I’m also a little surprised that there isn’t any lane departure or collision avoidance capability available on the iQ at launch – perhaps that will be included in the AI features later?Overall, this is a phenomenal dash cam in terms of quality, easily the best video quality I’ve ever seen from a dash cam. If you live in a poor T-mobile service area, the “smart” features are a mixed bag at best and I can’t believe there’s no way to use a wifi connection. Nextbase says the camera supports up to a 256GB microSD card, which I will definitely be upgrading to so I can get more recording time when in a poor 4G area. If there were an easier way to transfer videos to the cloud (by wifi or Bluetooth to a cell phone) then this camera would be easily worth the high upfront and subscription costs. As it sits now, I’d think hard about the value if you have questionable Tmo coverage in your area.

Upon unboxing the product, the first thing I noticed was how large the camera assembly was. I ended up having to mount it off-center on my windshield to avoid obscuring my field of vision while driving. The camera can be adjusted towards and away from the windshield via a pivot point on the mount, but that is the only degree of freedom available, so you have to be very purposeful with mounting alignment in order to avoid being stuck with imperfect camera alignment. The device came with many variations of cabling for compatibility with many different vehicles, which was a thoughtful addition. The device came with many variations of cabling for compatibility with many different vehicles, which was a thoughtful addition. The included cables were plenty long and the including spudger tool helped with tucking the cables out of sight. Initial setup was fairly painless: the dash cam's display shows a QR code that is scanned in-app which initiates pairing and a firmware update.Overall usability was solid. The 4G LTE network had a consistent and stable connection most of the time. As expected, reception could get a bit dicey when in parking ramps or some garages, but overall the dash cam maintained connectivity well. Sometimes, video thumbnails would take a long time to load (or would not load at all), though I am not sure if these issues were 4G connection related or not.Video quality is undoubtedly a highlight. The videos looked good whether doing in-app playback or after exporting to my phone's storage. I was concerned that I would potentially miss out on footage since I had to mount the dash cam off-centered on the windshield, but the wide 140-degree field of view allowed the whole road to get captured even with this non-ideal mounting scenario. The option for storage expansion via microSD card is welcomed since these high res video files add up quickly. One nit-pick I have is the absence of continuous video recording. The in-app clip library gets bogged down pretty quickly with a steady flow 30-second clips as you drive. It would be nice to be able to have the option to capture each driving session as one long segment in local storage and then edit into smaller sections to capture specific events as needed. The G-sensor's responsiveness enhances the dash cam's ability to capture impactful events effectively. It is a little on the sensitive side and often calls out non-events as impacts, but given the choice, I prefer that it is tuned overly sensitive rather than not.I appreciate the inclusion of Witness Mode for added security. When activated, it shared live video with a trusted emergency contact. Smart Sense Parking is a nice AI-driven feature that provides a 360 degree field around your car that is watched for threats. This in combination with the Remote Alarm feature give added layers of protection and valuable peace of mind. I would have really liked to try out Guardian Mode and Roadwatch AI, though these features are still under development. There are many things to like about this product. The smart features (at least the ones that are available) are very impressive. However, one VERY important thing for potential buyers to be aware of are that many of these features are locked behind paywalls. I'd highly recommend doing research on which features you find important in a smart dash cam and then seeing which tier of the Nextbase subscription you are willing to pay for. If you are unwilling to pay for the subscription, the lack of 4G LTE will neuter a lot of the aspects that make this dash cam special.Overall, the Nextbase iQ 4K Smart Dash Cam is fundamentally a well-constructed device with substantial potential. While the hardware, though slightly bulky, integrates advanced technology, the software promises a lot yet appears to be in an evolving state. Even after the innovative capabilities of the dash cam complete development efforts and are integrated into the product, these features may be pay-to-play in perpetuity, so I again highly recommend that potential buyers do their research on subscription plan features and costs before taking the plunge on this product.

[Rewarded Review] Future-Proof Dash Cam But With A Monthly Cost
8 November 2023

I have owned a few dash cameras, but I wanted one that would send me alerts when something was happening to my car and also did not rely on an internal battery. Therefore, I was curious to see if the Nextbase iQ 4K Smart dashcam would meet these needs.Setup was easy, but I did have a hard time scanning the QR code on the camera screen with my iPhone 13 pro. I would recommend getting a good idea of where to place the camera before taking off the film from VHB tape on the speaker’s back. The camera can adjust back and forth, but make sure that it’s vertical before sticking it to the windshield, since it does not adjust side to side or up and down. It needs to be connected to the car’s battery using the OBD connector or the fuse box to power the camera. It is worth ... MoreI have owned a few dash cameras, but I wanted one that would send me alerts when something was happening to my car and also did not rely on an internal battery. It needs to be connected to the car’s battery using the OBD connector or the fuse box to power the camera. It is worth noting that the OBD connector does not contain a passthrough, so the camera would need to be disconnected if the OBD connector is needed.Video/Voice featuresI was pretty happy with how clear the video feed was for both the front- and cabin-facing camera. I tried the voice features, and the camera was responsive to my commands. Since I work in a retail setting, I had to set the proximity sensors for the Smart Sense Parking closer to the vehicle because otherwise I was getting a lot of notifications. It is pretty easy to adjust, but I would like for a GPS setting to determine how the sensors send alerts. I did not experience any issues with this camera draining my car’s battery since it has a feature to prevent this, but I would like for the camera to provide feedback on the health of my car’s battery and warn me if it detects an issue. All the features of this camera performed well, but the Roadwatch AI and Guardian Mode were not active as of this review.CostI feel the biggest drawback of this great camera is the monthly/yearly cost. If you choose to not pay a monthly fee, the camera only sends text notifications and still has voice control. I believe this camera uses T-Mobile’s 4G network, so that would explain why the price is about the same as a wearable device. However, I would like to be able to add this camera to my phone carrier’s network and perhaps get a little better pricing. In sum, if you are looking for a future-proof camera that seems to keep adding features and don’t mind spending $10-$20 a month to get the most out of it, then this is the absolute best camera you can get. However, if do not want the monthly cost added to a pricey camera, there are other options that may better suit.

[Rewarded Review] Good Camera still waiting on some features

Let’s start with the easy stuff, install. Installation is super easy if you use the included OBD connector cable. Although this assumes you’re not using the OBD port for something else already since you can only have one thing plugged into it at a time but otherwise its quick and easy one wire to run and that’s it. I will note though that the larger base of the camera, the part that mounts to the window, might be somewhat problematic if your car has a large tunnel or camera cover in the middle of the window. My car has this, and it means that the camera sits a little more off center than I would normally like but the wide angle view means even with that I still get everything in front of the car as expected from a dash cam. My car has this, and it means that the camera sits a little more off center than I would normally like but the wide angle view means even with that I still get everything in front of the car as expected from a dash cam. One other note they do include a standard hardwire kit with a bunch of different fuse tap sizes as well you just have to make sure you have a good ground point nearby if you’re going to do it that way. Overall, I like the flexible options they give you for wiring up the camera and it’s really a set it and forget it kind of install because of that.Once the camera is installed setup is super easy as well. Just install the app on your phone and follow the prompts which include scanning a QR code on the device to “pair” it to the app. The camera has a cell connection, so it uses that to do all the initial setup. I will note that you should make sure you have a decent amount of time set aside for this because it will want to update the cameras firmware in the process and that can take a little bit of time. Also, I imagine if you live in an area with weak cell coverage this process might be a little more painful. Now just as a note to get the “full” functionality of this camera you do need to subscribe to their service for it of which there are two tiers but that’s mainly because a lot of the features are cloud based and require the cell service and I’m assuming that monthly/annual fee covers the cost involved in those things. I’m not going to comment on the monthly cost in this review because at the time of testing not all the features of the service are done yet (this review being done in early November 2023). The “Guardian Mode” and “Roadwatch A.I.” are both still listed as “Coming Soon” whatever timeframe that means I have no idea so just keep that in mind if you’re looking to buy this camera. It does seem like you get a three month “trial” subscription though so that’s a plus if you use it and find out you really don’t care about those features. As for the camera function itself, the video quality on the 4K unit I have is pretty good for a dash cam, and even facing directly into a setting sun it was capable of still giving a decent enough camera image to tell what was going on in front of the vehicle. Now to get the best quality video you do need to take time to download a high-quality version of the clips since most of the previews are lower quality. This seems reasonable since you’re getting the initial clips through a cell connection. Also, the parking mode is nice to have especially if you live in an apartment or something and can’t keep an eye on your car all the time. It’s nice having that extra little bit coverage if something does happen.Overall I think this is a decent camera I just wish all the advertised features where actually ready to use. For the features I could use the remote access to the camera through the app when I’m not near the car is nice and the parking feature (because of the constant power from the OBD) is great too. I think once all the features are available to use this will be a great dashcam overall until then it’s qualifies as a “good” buy in my book.

[Rewarded Review] Great, but enough already with the subscriptions

My gripe - the subscriptions. I'm jumping right into this to get it out of the way. This is like micro-transactions in games to me at this point. Paying for a premium product and then getting lassoed into recurring monthly fees is the adult version of micro-gaming transactions. I'll leave it at that, but .5 of the 1 star being removed is due to this. Not a total deal breaker for me, but as consumers we've been allowing a slippery-slope to take place and it is only going to get more and more out of hand. The other .5 of a star is the bulkiness of the iQ. It is rather view-obstructing to say the least. It is rather view-obstructing to say the least. I mounted it in each of our vehicles and in our smallest car (a Fiat 500 Abarth) you had a hard time looking across to the front passenger fender and being able to see clearly for oncoming anything. I tried mounting it a little lower on the windshield, but then you have an obstructed view at the hoodline that is more than I'm personally comfortable with. Again, not a TOTAL deal-breaker, but I wanted to mention it right up front that all the tech these things pack has to go somewhere, so they are a bit on the larger side. The performance of the camera itself is top-notch. Video quality is amazing day or night, rain or shine. The app is great, and all the information is exactly where you expect it to be. Accessing your videos (subscription!) is quick/painless (grrrrrrr) so at least know that your monthly payments are being put to good use in that regard.Mount the thing, get it hooked up, sign up for the free 3-month trial and when that expires pay or don't. The payments ensure you have Emergency Service contact whenever there's an accident/issue sensed, that your videos can be accessed at a moments notice, and the constant 4G LTE connection. I just wish you could have a version of this top-shelf model in a subscription-free version where you could have the same video quality while only needing to use an SD or something along those lines to store your videos locally. Nextbase has lower-tier models more akin to this, but obviously they want you to pony-up for this other bells/whistles, so I get it.All-in-all, a good dashcam, just huge and that stinkin' monthly fee.

[Rewarded Review] Very Impressive!

The IQ 4K Smart Dash Cam from Nextbase is an impressive piece of equipment. From the packaging to the device itself, Nextbase has really done a good job.The IQ includes multiple options for powering the device through either your vehicle's ODB connector, or directly into your fuse box. It even has a "power down" feature so it doesn't drain your battery. I chose the ODB option and by using the included "tuck tool" was able to easily hide the excess cord in the vehicle trim. After downloading the app, the instructions ask that you leave the vehicle running during the process. Obviously, this means you shouldn't try this in the garage! Obviously, this means you shouldn't try this in the garage! Unfortunately, it took me about 20 minutes and a call to tech support because my Iphone would not read the tiny QR code on the very small IQ screen. It took the interior lights, and the flashlight before my phone would read the QR and pair the device. (maybe they can include a card with the code instead). After pairing, I suggest holding the IQ in place while you view what will be recorded as once you "stick" it to your windshield there's very little adjustment.Nextbase suggests installation high up, near the rearview mirror but my vehicle (22 Mazda CX5) has the black dot material in this area. Since the IQ "sticks" to the windshield, I mounted mine a little lower. Although it is visible while driving it's not at all distractive.Since this is the 4k model, the recording quality of the videos is crisp, clear and reproduces color very well. It appears that the only video accessible from the phone app are what Nextbase refers to as "incidents" such as parking the car, entering/exiting the vehicle, or when the IQ detects movement around the vehicle. Video of actual driving events are available by removing the MicroSD card and viewing on a computer. (make sure you have an SD card reader).Sound is recorded clearly via the IQ microphone and although the interior video is black/white, it is still very clear. Voices are easily understood during playback. With GPS capabilities, not only does the IQ know where your car is, you can also monitor speed and the location if someone else is driving. It includes crash detection and SOS as additional features. The IQ is a high-quality dashcam, made by a company that specializes in dashcams, not by someone who "also makes" dashcams. The unit feels very well made, is packaged well, and includes everything you need for a neat, clean installation.Although most people will probably not need to call tech support, it's good to know that their people are helpful and patient. This may be a little more expensive than similar products but so far really seems to be worth it!
